TF2 community raises $430,000 for Japan

"Nice work, everyone!" - Valve.

Valve has thanked the Team Fortress 2 community for raising an incredible $430,543.65 for the Japanese disaster relief fund.

That number represents the sale of three limited hats and two noisemakers - items added to the Mann Co. Team Fortress 2 game store at the end of March.

"Nice work, everyone!" wrote Valve on the TF2 blog. "It's been inspiring to watch gamers around the world come together for such a worthy cause."

The hats and noisemakers disappeared on 6th April.

    Indeed...nice work guys.

    Btw, how many people constitute the TF2 community nowadays? Is it still large?

    With separate companies doing their own thing, might it be fair to say the industry as a whole has donated over $1,000,000?

    Edit - meant £ not $. It's what I deal with, and checking out how much a shirt would cost last week showed $1 to be between 60p and 70p.

    Way more than that.

    A quick Google shows TF2 raising 0.4m, Popcap 0.2m, Sony/PSN 1.3m, FIFA players 0.5m.

    I'm sure there are loads more.

    And where will that money go? probably into some deep pockets, just like what happened with the Thailand tsunami disaster.

    Errr... this is Japan we are talkign about.

    Anyway... the relief things I participated in, all donated their money to the Japanese Red Cross.

    "Japan does not need charitable donations, it is very wealthy and will be just fine"

    My wife was in the Kobe earthquake in the 90s and it took many years before some people got a real home again and were not living in shelters or sports centres.I think Japan can use some help, despite the fact that it is a rich country.

    And yeah... the reason a lot of people didn't give to Pakistan is that, a few weeks before, a lot of them were on the street shouting "f*** the West". Despite the suffering... a lot of people were not really inclined to give after that.

    Or you might discover that you can donate to more than one thing without the need to exclude others. Go and preach somewhere else you cunt.
  • chrisjm #16 1 year ago

    I'll donate to who i want to captain ironfist, that includes donating to Japan in this crisis (and not for any of the reasons you claim) and sponsering an endangered cat. how do you like them apples!?

    I doff my hat to them! :)
  • Softie2k #18 1 year ago

    Pakistan = Hates the West
    Japan = Adores the West

    Who would you rather give money to? I gave money to both tragedies but don't you just feel like telling Pakistan to sling their hook sometimes?

    You know, instead of the USA pretending to be the good guys and help other countries, maybe they should first fix their own country. We need monetary help as well. Afterall, Japan has become an obligation for the United States to take care of after being nuked and having no standing army.

    But they forgot one thing. They only raised 400 K for Japan ONLY because of these asinine hats that Valve forced upon their already mediocre game as a must have for everyone, and those who didn't have an annoyingly alliterated pile of polygons and pixels were constantly taunted by Valve themselves.

    Plus, like everything ever given for charity or anything, these hats have to be the ugliest in the entire game, and let's not forget how much these newer hats are guzzling your computer's resources.
