DC Universe Online coming to US PSN

"For those who just can’t make it to the store."

Sony will sell superhero MMO DC Universe Online as a PlayStation network digital download - in the US.

"For those of you who just can't make it to the store, we have the answer, shop from your couch...DC Universe Online is coming to the PlayStation Store!" Sony Online Entertainment PR manager Ryan Peters wrote on the US PlayStation Blog.

Only US pricing has been revealed. DCUO will cost $59.99 from the PlayStation Store – that includes 30-days of free gameplay, with a monthly game play fee of $14.99 thereafter.

A release date announcement is expected soon - there's no word on whether the game will hit the European PlayStation Store.

For those lazy, fat bastards who can't be bothered to walk/drive to the store?

Perhaps they are going to the store, but have read the reviews and are making a sensible choice not to buy this game

To be fair the average US worker has to do longer hours (if you include the commute) and gets less paid days off than us, so digital distribution is a much bigger plus there than it is here.

This offer will almost certainly come to the UK at some point if only for the increased profit margin afforded by cutting out the retailer. If it doesn't then Sony are seriously missing a trick.

This is a good idea for this type of game, but it it would benefit from a 1 week free try-before-you-buy trial.

I was lucky enough to go on the Beta and it was then I decided the DCUO was for me. Without that I wouldn't have purchased the game considering the average reviews and subscription charge.

No thanks, if i was going to buy this game it will be on blu-ray not download because it will take up to much space on the hdd with all the updates aswell. plus im waiting for final fantasy online for ps3 to come proper mmo game thats when i dont mind paying monthly fee.

So, what does that have to do with us:p

    @Murton

They might get less pay, but things are cheaper as well I think.

@ZizouFC Too true. But then it's a bloody huge download even on Blu-Ray. I launched the game at 6pm and it was 11pm before I could play it. It was so bad I began to suspect there was little more on the disc than a request for my sub code and to trigger a download to the actual game.

Purchasing as a download may even speed up the process.

Maybe it will be at the same PSN bargain(?!?) price point as Mass Effect 2 was...

@menage - they're actually paid more than us on average, my argument is purely time/convience based. The average American worker has significantly less free time than we do so digital distribution carries a huge plus over there, one of the many reasons that digital distribution costs the same or more than retail in some cases, the other being that retailers will cry foul at publishers undercutting them online.

As for the download size, I believe that the install dumps the vast majority of the game data to the HDD anyway so you're not gaining anything there by opting for a disc version. Assuming same price you'd do best to base your decision on your download speed and whatever your ISPs usage policy is. If your download speed is slow or your ISP has a tendency to throttle it may be quicker to go to the store.

When I downloaded the beta, it appeared to be on a P2P site which meant it downloaded relatively quick as far as 15Gb files go, although I dread to think how long before it is actually ready to play from download it will be ready for those not on unlimited download limits....

Plus wasn't there a 2Gb update, this will make the GT5 installation seem fast in comparision!!

Someone hasn't been watching the news. The average American worker is under attack with wadges dropping like a dead weight because of people on the political spectrum feeling like they have to cut social programs instead of fixing actual tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthy
