Deathsmiles iPhone, iPod touch announced

Out in the spring.

Cave's brain-melting horizontal shmup Deathsmiles will launch on iPhone and iPod touch in the spring.

The Japanese game maker refers to the iPhone/iPod touch version of Deathsmiles as a port of the Xbox 360 version rather than of the arcade version, reports Andriasang.

The Xbox 360 version launched as a budget game in the UK last Friday. Simon Parkin entered the zone for Eurogamer and emerged with an 8/10.

"This is a superb horizontal shoot 'em up delivered in a sterling package," he gushed. "It has all of the score-attack appeal of Bulletstorm in a far more dense and concentrated form."

A trailer for the iPhone version is below.

Only introduced to Cave through the iPhone, but boy do I love 'em. This seems the trickiest to port though, what with the shoot left/right being integral. Awesome!

I'm not a huge fan of the iphone versions of their shooters. To me the touch screen controls trivialised the game, I only seemed to die if I got knocked or if my finger got 'stuck' on the screen (usually happened if I didn't have to move for a few seconds). Not sure if its been patched in since then but no save option was also a major problem given games last 45 minutes and drain so much battery power.

Looking at the video, they could do with adjusting the contrast of the bullets. Purple bullets + purple backgrounds + small screen partially covered by fingers isn't a great combination.

I bet it will cost an order of magnitude less than the 360 version.

I wonder how the touch screen controls will work as this is a horizontal shooter. I don't really want my fat finger obscuring the screen. It works well with stuff like Espgaluda because you've got a bit of space at the bottom of the screen.

Espgaluda2 was a good Iphone game but still paled next to the home console version.

I hope it's a profitable route for Cave, will stick with the console versions myself though.

It's interesting that Ios is getting some hardcore/niche games.

Good news. My only concern is the price - I do think that £6 for most of Cave's iOS games is excessive. Still, they are awesome....

Yeah Espgaluda's control system was fantastic but I may stick to the 360 version for this, the shoot left/right mechanic seems ill-fitted to an iPhone.

If anyone can make a horizontal shooter work on the iPhone, it's Cave. Cannot wait to give this a go; DoDonPachi and Espgaluda are ridiculous amounts of fun and probably my favourite iPhone games.
