Lara Croft gets Kane & Lynch DLC

Legacy of Kain duo to pop up too.

In one of the stranger gaming crossovers of recent years, Kane and Lynch will soon be playable in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

Hacked PC footage on YouTube, spotted by Joystiq, showed four as-yet unreleased DLC packs for Crystal Dynamic's co-operative top-down Tomb Raider spin-off.

Two are new Challenge Packs called 'Things That Go Boom" and "Hazardous Reunion", one is marked "Kane & Lynch Character Pack" and another is titled "Raziel and Kain Character Pack".

You might recognise the latter as the starring duo of Crystal Dynamics' dormant Legacy of Kain franchise. Kane and Lynch are of course the titular stars of Eidos' third person shooter series, last seen in the notoriously dismal Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days.

The developer has since confirmed the news on its Twitter feed, asking fans to vote for which pack they want to see first. No release date or pricing details have been divulged yet.

Or looking at it another way kane and lynch finally get to be in a decent game.

Okay, first up - Raziel and KANE? Might wanna check that, pretty sure that should be Kain. Unless they decided to shoehorn in one of the mysoganistic pair whether we want it or not. Mostly not.
Secondly, I'd much much MUCH prefer a new Legacy of Kain game than to shoehorn the cast into other games. No remakes please unless the intention is to only change the graphics... which for a couple of PS1 games and early PS2, is unlikely...
Thirdly - why are we seeing DLC characters pumped into a Lara Croft game? I'm pretty sure the lure of it is the whole Lara Croft thing, not the supporting cast... just a thought...
And lastly, Kane and Lynch can go take a nice running jump off a pretty little clifftop. After that diabolical pile of whatsit that passed as a game, I'd rather they just slipped forever into obscurity...

I'm sure it would be cool to see Kain and Raziel again, but what's the point? I seriously doubt we're getting a new game anytime soon.

On the other hand, if they have new dialogue, I'd probably have to plunge just for that.

    Nice proof-reading, there.

Anyway, nice to see the occasional reference, but after a while it's basically just a cock-tease.

i would love another actual LoK game..or even remake the first lot so i can catch up..and then release a new one :D
  • Kami #8 1 year ago

Just wondering how many comments will be wanting a new Legacy of Kain game... I always thought it was a guilty pleasure, clearly I shouldn't be as ashamed of liking it as I was led to believe...
  • Triggerhappytel #9 1 year ago

Soul Reaver was a great game; I'd love a remake or a proper new series instalment. I didn't really get on with Soul Reaver 2 though, and thought the ones thereafter weren't great. Never played the original Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain either; still waiting for it to show up on PSN.
  • darkmorgado #10 1 year ago

Get rid of Kane and Lynch - two mediocre/shit games.

Rather than give us Raziel and Kain as skins in an XBLA game, why not just give us a new Legacy of Kain game? Soul Reaver was one of the best games ever made on PSX. The series has a massive fanbase. Give us an open-world LOK game. Use Assassin's Creed and Metroid as a template.

    Get to it!

Aren't we still waiting on the online PC/PS3 patches?

You're not missing much. It was a very poor Zelda clone with graphics that the SNES could have easily outdone.

I'd probably kill somebody for a Blood Omen 3. Of course, if they make it more like the awesome first game, that is. I don't want another travesty like Blood Omen 2.

A man can dream, I guess.

"I don't want another travesty like Blood Omen 2"

As far as I can remember, Blood Omen 2 isn't canon in the Legacy of Kain series so... yeah. It wasn't great, but then it was hardly the first game to be abandoned from its main franchise for being shit... oh hi there Resident Evil Gaiden, no no I wasn't trying to insult you in any way shape or form...

Tbh, they may as well continue on from Defiance. It seems the most logical place to start from...

    Those are some bad dogs.
  • darkmorgado #17 1 year ago

IIRC, RE: Gaiden was never considered canon.
  • Malek86 #18 1 year ago

@Kami: actually, it's canon in a sense. Amy Hennig said it's the alternate universe that happens because of the events in Defiance (confused yet? Think about it).

Anyway, BO2 wasn't actually developed as a LOK game initially, that's why it feels so out of place.
  • xen0n #19 1 year ago

Bizarre, but I kind of want to see this now...
  • Kami #20 1 year ago

Well, quite, but even if they haven't thrown it out of the series - the fact it takes place in a totally different timeline in an alternate universe to my mind doesn't make it in any way kosher either... it's a spin-off, fanfiction if you will. At least, that is what I will tell myself to not taint the other games...

Besides, it didn't need to be bad... Silent Hill: The Room wasn't designed as a Silent Hill game, and yeah it was different - some maybe didn't like that. But it wasn't BAD...

edit; Gaiden is just one of those very strange beasts... Capcom have never expressly stated it ISN'T canon. But what has come since has suggested they have basically contradicted its story, so it is believed to not be canon... which is odd, because the story was perhaps the one thing about Gaiden that actually bloody worked... well, other than the ending... which was crap... and odd... and smelly... and weird... and awfully smelly...

Point is, it seems to have been bypassed. Whether either game is strictly canon or not, they're hardly kosher to their respective franchises either are they? They don't really take part in their games timelines, which to my mind doesn't really make them canon. But hey, we can argue technicalities here night if you want.

I guess they decided to make it a Blood Omen when they noticed that the game was so bad, it would have been totally dismissed if it didn't have at least some kind of recognizable name behind it.
  • Kami #22 1 year ago

Which is a shame because much like The Room, the game itself isn't complete shit (BO2 I'd say was average at best). It's the expectation that comes from attaching the name to the box that is the biggest letdown. That is the turn-off. Thankfully, I haven't seen anyone try this crap on for a few years now so we might have escaped that mid-noughties fad of "stick a big name on the box and it'll sell" *looks at Activision* No wait, I retract that statement...
  • Aradiel #23 1 year ago

    Re: Kami

The thing is, the end of Blood Omen takes place in an alternate timeline to the rest of Blood Omen and possibly causes Soul Reaver.
Soul Reaver 2 takes place across 3 separate timelines, and causes both Blood Omen 2 and Defiance.

If being in an alternate timeline makes it not kosher, then the entire franchise is not kosher - the entire plot of the games involves screwing around with time, shifting events and creating alternate timelines so that they come up with one they want.
  • Kami #24 1 year ago

Fair point Aradiel. I think the main reason I don't regard it as canon or kosher is because, as said, it doesn't really "feel" like it fits in - gamewise or plotwise, it just didn't quite work, it didn't seem to slot in (even in a game series with some wiblley-wobbley, timey-wimey stuff going on). Of course, not being originally intended as a LoK game is probably the reason for that, looking back on it now. I always considered it at best an interesting diversion, rather than something that had a lasting impact on the series. But hey, it's all personal taste at the end of the day right? I mean, all series need at least one game that you need to pretend isn't part of the series... Resident Evil 5, Sonic Unleashed (or most Sonic games of the noughties), Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness... it does seem to be some kind of law of assholery or something.

*goes back to trying to mindrubber BO2 out of brain*

@Kami: hey, Activision did the same with Zork fifteen years ago already, so it's not like they are new to it. Although admittedly Zork Nemesis was a pretty good game.

What the fuck is Crystal thinking!?

I'm a TR geek, been posting on a TR board all evening about this latest announcement. It defies fucking belief as to why they're throwing in random characters. There's a whole supporting cast in the TR series, but no, they go and shoehorn in Raziel & Kain and two other people who, until I Googled them, I'd never even bloody heard of. Another annoying thing, dozens of people on the TR boards knew who the characters were going to be months ago when the PC version of GoL was hacked, but we were subsequently barred from talking about it until Crystal made their 'glorious' announcement on Facetard and Twatter

The whole thing is a dumbass idea Crystal. I hope the character packs (as well as the shoddy challenge packs) crash & burn.

Kami - I sort of get what you mean. Gameplay wise I adored the games but when the plot started to get into the realms of time travel things started to get a bit confusing unless you had seriously read up on your stuff.
