3DS "way cooler" than Kinect or Move

Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell says so.

Kinect and Move are hot this Christmas but they're not as snazzy as 3DS, reckons Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell.

"When we were working on Hybrid, we [had to] decide whether we wanted to do a Kinect game or a core title. Microsoft said, 'You can do Kinect!' We checked it out, and decided we'd rather do this," studio co-founder Jeremiah Slaczka told Game Informer magazine.

"Move is okay," he added. "It's Wii plus. It's good for what it is.

"Ultimately it's all about the system. If the idea makes sense, then we can do it and we will. But it's all about the idea."

"The 3DS is cooler in our opinion."

The 3DS will be released in Europe in March 2011. Slaczka revealed that "we have people playing around with it".

"The 3D camera is probably the most interesting thing that's the least talked about," he said.

5th Cell is responsible for inventive DS games Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts. They task you with solving problems by writing the name of an object, person or thing that can help you. Whatever you write is summoned to you. Plus, the games looked very cuddly and nice.

All of which is a million miles away from 5th Cell's new game, Hybrid - an XBLA shooter aimed at the core crowd.

"It's set in a post-apocalyptic world," Slaczka revealed. "It's pretty much the direct opposite of what Scribblenauts is, which is all these family friendly graphics.

"The game is much more tuned to the core audience. It's for the Xbox. Just like with the DS, we said, 'What is the DS and who is the market?' We're doing the same thing for the Xbox.

"Porting over Drawn to Life to the Xbox is a bad idea because no one is going to buy it," he said. "That's fine. We're all hardcore gamers. So Hybrid has guns and its post-apocalyptic."

Hybrid is due for release next year.

    Ooo, 3D camera? Sounds nifty!

Gotta agree. The whole motion sensing thing lost its magic quite some time ago. The 3DS is a new thing once again and it's shiny and exciting.

Of course the 3DS is better. Kinect is lagtastic and just shite, whilst Move is exactly what he said, just Wii Motion Plus. At least the 3DS is doing something new and not annoying.

And steak is better than applepie.

    Apples and oranges imo.

    @anduwilkis

    You actually played one?

Nintendo are one step ahead of the 'me too's'.

Agree with the comments on the new tech' but I've been burned by Nintendo and their poorly-supported (by 3rd parties) machines far too many times.... ( and I'm as bored of Mario and Zelda games as I am of the FIFA and CoD series)

I would have to disagree with his comments on Xbox only being shooters in post apocalyptic environs. Clearly he's not played the likes of Fable, or the huge wealth of successful XBLA titles that don't fit that description but have sold extremely well to the 360 crowd (Limbo, Braid, Trials HD, Castle Crashers, etc....)

I predict that Nintendo 3DS will rule the world at Xmas 2011.

Agree, at least Nintendo showed some decent games that are being developed for it at the reveal!

'We're all hardcore gamers. So Hybrid has guns and its post-apocalyptic'
We're all hardcore gamers. So we're going to make something completely derivative and exactly like five hundred thousand other imaginatively bankrupt shooters. Why???? When you've made something as fresh and original as Scribblenauts?

How about a post utopian game instead of post apocalyptic?

^^ thats what I thought, scribblenought dev who was equally at home on all consoles goes for 3DS LOL....
  • kangarootoo #14 1 year ago

    /sigh

Is it even worth reading this? Ninty dev says Ninty hardware is better than competitor hardware. Well hoo wudda thunkit.

He may be right, he may be wrong, but he is the last place I am going to look for a non-biased opinion on the matter.

"When we were working on Hybrid, we [had to] decide whether we wanted to do a Kinect game or a core title. Microsoft said, 'You can do Kinect!' We checked it out, and decided we'd rather do this,"

    There's something beautiful about that.

And the 3DS is actually a new gaming platform - not a peripheral.
  • influenceuk #17 1 year ago

If i was going to play a game in 3D, then i would rather play it on a TV than a hand held.

The 3DS is not another platform, its still a DS just with and added gimmick in similar vain as Kinect is a new gimmick for the 360. End of the day its up to the customers what is good and whats is not.

On a side note, for some reason i am yet to experience 3D TV i just cant see it and have tried over a dozen TV's. However i played a 3D game and it was great, really improved the game!!?!

    a Jeremiah Slaczka game?

So, mobile and DS developer with a single XBLA game coming soon says they prefer developing for the DS?

Scribblenauts was a horrible game, full of potential and much-loved by games reviewers and critics, but it played really badly. It was a huge disappointment for me.

Edit: Stuff you, neggo, don't like hearing the truth?

How do you compare a handheld console with a motion controller? And why?!
  • StooMonster #22 1 year ago

coolbritannia: in marketing terms they are competing for share of purse/pocket/wallet -- i.e. if someone has Ł100 to spend on "games" where does the money go, not everyone can afford to buy everything.

Just wait until Strictly comes out on Kinect and then tell me "Which is cooler?"
