SOCOM dev making team-based Resi Evil?

What is Resident Evil: Raccoon City?

A multiplayer-focused Resident Evil game may be in development at SOCOM developer Slant Six.

The Canadian studio behind PS3 game SOCOM: Confrontation and PSP games Tactical Strike and Fireteam Bravo 3 is making a game called Resident Evil: Raccoon City and described as a "team-based affair", according to a document received by Kotaku.

Adding fuel to the rumour fire is Slant Six Games' website.

It's currently in development on "an amazing new project" in conjunction with a "new publishing partner on a world class franchise". Hmm...

Eurogamer awarded SOCOM: Confrontation 5/10 upon its March 2009 release.

2007's PSP title SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Tactical Strike was better, managing 7/10.

In June Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi confirmed he had nothing to do with the development of the sixth instalment in the series, but added it could be a complete reboot.

Valve's successful Left 4 Dead is a difficult act to follow and WILL unavoidably be the yard stick for the new RE team based game, still am pretty keen on the idea though, but what about the RE Outbreak 1 and 2 on the PS2 and that didn't pans out did it?

"SOCOM dev making "team-based" Resi Evil"

That it truly depressing already :(

So basically any chance of any further RE games being like the good creepy survival horror of old is zero. I knew 5 was the last of it's kind but wanted a return to the greatness of the series (1-CV) not more mediocre shooty type affairs.
  • penhalion #3 2 years ago

I always wondered why they didn't take outbreak and run with it into a more L4D style game. All that would have been required was a Gears of War style 3rd person move and cover system and some Alan Wake style graphics. Couple that with some simple puzzle solving and you would have had a super hit.

  • Kami #4 2 years ago

No it didn't but they balled up with the Outbreak spinoff - it was slow, laggy and let us be fair here, we didn't even get the online component for the first game! But the idea was sound - exactly right, look at Left4Dead (although I'd rather they didn't copy it). The concept was there with Outbreak, the execution... wasn't.

That said, I would rather the series went back to its roots a bit. Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 had a real charm about them that does seem to be missing now - they were great games with a proper understanding of humour and timing (or, in some cases, the lack of timing). Resident Evil 4 did this too...

Hopefully this "reboot" will take us back to zombies proper... I loved Degeneration. Bring back zombies and T/G/V-Virus mutant freaks please!

If this is multiplayer only I'm definitely not interested.

    "Code: Veronica HD remake?"

Fans have been asking for 2, 3 and C:V to get the Resi 1 treatment for quite some time... it ain't gonna happen...

So would buy them all though...

You know what, if they went and gave them all a HD makeover, (and maybe whack them on PC to make up for all those poor RE ports in the past), I would gladly leave them to this dead shooter series and quit moaning how RE is shit now :)
  • Kami #8 2 years ago

    Totally agreed.

Especially for me Resi 3... I absolutely loved it. Take that game out of context and it is as hilarious as it is thrilling. I would pay very good money for an HD Remake of Resi 3... and 2 and CV and possibly even a port of the REmake as well...

"So basically any chance of any further RE games being like the good creepy survival horror of old is zero."

    I fail to see how.

One game being outsourced to another developer gives absolutely no indication whatsoever that Capcom aren't themselves working on any other type of Resident Evil game. What we've seen of Revalations already looks promising in the respect of a creepy survival horror title.

Typical Resident Evil fans. Capcom offer out Lost In Nightmares which for all intents and purposes IS the biggest hint possible that Capcom wants to test the waters with regards to going back to the series roots...but one internet rumour later and the sky is falling down and we'll never get an old Resident Evil game again?!

    @Hobo

Well considering RE5 was so bad it got traded extremely quickly trying to sell DLC on it to me is extremely pointless. Besides I'm on PC now anyway and Capcom support there is lackluster and phoned in a lot so no Nightmare to be lost in.

You are right though we don't know for sure and maybe I am jumping the gun, but if this rumour is true we have a Co-Op game from a dev known for shooters (really quite average ones IMO). What does that tell you of the direction Capcom are dragging poor RE? I'd love to be proved wrong of course but RE4, 5 and this rumour tell me otherwise.

"Well considering RE5 was so bad it got traded extremely quickly trying to sell DLC on it to me is extremely pointless."

Because it wasn't relevant to you though, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Capcom still went ahead with the DLC experiments and it's hard to argue that it wasn't fantastic.

"What does that tell you of the direction Capcom are dragging poor RE? I'd loved to be proved wrong of course but RE4, 5 and this rumour tell me otherwise."

I won't go into RE4, because it's just the single greatest game of all time for me.

But i wouldn't have thought it does much at all to do the direction to have a third party developing the game. Code Veronica was handled by a third party with a pretty average record previously so who knows?

But if i was going to think of the direction, i'd be more concerned with what Capcom themselves are doing with Revelations (gameplay video leaked last week looks promising) on the 3DS rather than this rumour, as solid as it might look right now.

Slant 6 know shooters. They might not be able to pull them off too well (admittedly, i enjoyed Confrontation), but they know shooters. If Capcom gives them free reign over the Framework engine and drops the game in the middle of RC, it has to be worth a look i'd say.

    Sorry for the rant.

edit: Is it weird i felt the need to +1 your post just to put it back to 0 because i didn't want it to look like i was negging you?! haha

It will probably be a WWII or Western game with Zombie DLC :p

There is no point debating then, we will just never agree on anything RE or the direction :)

Seriously...the reboot stuff of 5 AND 4 was arse.
  • SpaceMonkey77 #15 2 years ago

Interesting. Worth keeping an eye on.

I've always been disappointed by Capcom's lack of offering such content in RE. RE5 multiplayer was okay but could have been much better. I'll welcome a decent thrid person zombie mash up with decent worthy co-op.
  • photoboy #16 2 years ago

Why is it suddenly cool to trash RE4? It was and still is a fantastic game IMHO, and while RE5 took a giant dump on the franchise I don't think it's fair to lump RE4 in with it. Being trapped in a building being overwhelmed by Ganados pouring in through every window and door is just as much a part of survival horror as being overwhelmed by those bastard Hunters in RE1.
  • Dolly #17 2 years ago

Resi 4 is mint. It baffles me how someone could say that it is a 'bad' game, apart from if they are an attention-seeking little whore.

5 was so bland that i can remember literally nothing about it already, apart from that horrible final boss battle on the volcano-type place.
  • bad09 #18 2 years ago

    @Dolly

Whore is a bit strong just because I hate a game you like!

Hey sorry I upset you but as fan of RE since day one who still plays the old games I think 4 is arse and always have done (a lot of the old fans do), RE4 still remains unfinished on the shelf. Bad Story, Las Plagus was terrible, that midget dude was cringeworthy, terribly dull shooter gameplay that really drags. None of the atmosphere, charm or character of the old pre-rendered survival horror games. Sure the opening village level is tense and fun but after that it gets incredibly dull and silly.

What I find weird though is you like 4 but not 5. Others have said this but I don't get it, it's the same game but with Co-Op. Sure a different setting but 5 plays exactly like 4. Point, shoot a few los plagus, pick up ammo, move on.

I think something between the creepiness of RES 1,2 and and action atmosphere of RES 4 would be awesome.

Anyone that tries to take on L4D had better bring there A game or they will fail epically!

Erm, don't take it personally? Everyone loves whores, and not everything people write on here is meant in the literal sense :)

Also, basing your opinion on the fact that you've been a fan of RE 'since day one' means feck all. I know plenty of people who had the first games on the PS1 (myself included) who love RE4, so don't try and trap the rest of us in with your "I'm a bigger fan than you's lot, so I'm right" mentality ;)

HEADSHOT! Well said. Too many people hide behind having played the games from the start qualifies them as a better judge on the Resident Evil 4 and 5. I was Elite Level Day One back in the day, still doesn't stop me enjoying Resident Evil 4 as a video game in it's own right and not moaning about it because it's nothing like the old days.
  • bad09 #22 2 years ago

    @Dolly

You're too defensive, I merely meant I've always loved RE games and still play them yet 4 is unfinshed and forgotten. It was not meant in a "I know more than you" kinda way.

  • EMULOUS #23 2 years ago

Wow, Slant Six, a company that released a half finished game (socom confrontation), didnt patch it untill a full year after release despite promises it would be updated monthly, and even after the patches played like monkey pap. Why is it in only the games industry is this allowed to happen? If a car manufacturer started to sell cars without brakes there would be uproar and the company would be shut down. Unlucky all you resi evil fans who might have been wishing for a decent game.
  • Alcock #24 2 years ago

Oh look, another Capcom series about to be ruined by western developers.

    Who would have guessed?
  • Foregone Reality #25 2 years ago

What I would love is for Capcom to adopt EA's controller input from Deadspace.

Excellent perspective; shoot while moving and also a very, very chilling atmosphere to boot!

It's the best of both worlds - however if given the choice I would love to see an old school RE with 1080p prerendered backgrounds.

Imagine the quality of the models used in the game? REmake still looks incredible..!
  • Notallowedhere #26 2 years ago

@EMULOUS and if you added a company with experience in making brakes to the car company would that solve the problem?

Dead Rising 2 worked out alright with a dev team that had only made 3rd rate baseball games in the past

I can't believe someone who claims to be a fan from the beginning could hate on RE4. RE4 is masterclass. Pure unadulterated masterclass from start to finish and remains so to this day.
