Fable III atop of the UK chart

New: Star Wars! WWE! Sims 3! Rock Band!

Update: UKIE has released sales figures for the top 10 games. These show that leader Fable III sold 128,895 copies since launch on Friday - 6000 more than Fable II managed.

That makes Fable III the 13th biggest Xbox 360 launch ever. Halo: Reach, remember, is the largest.

Fable III also represents Microsoft's third Xbox 360 exlcusive UK all-formats number one this year.

Sales for the rest of the top 10 are as follows:

  1. Fable III - 128,895
  2. FIFA 11 - 75,703
  3. Fallout: New Vegas - 69,613
  4. Just Dance 2 - 58,375
  5. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II - 56,054
  6. Medal of Honor - 48,650
  7. WWE Smackdown VS Raw 2011 - 47,785
  8. Professor Layton and the Lost Future - 45,470
  9. The Sims 3 - 28,624
  10. PES 2011 - 26,732

Original story: Fable III is the new leader of the UK all-formats chart.

The Xbox 360 exclusive beat off challenges from fellow newcomers Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (fifth), WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2011 (seventh) and The Sims 3 on console (ninth).

Harmonix's fantastic Rock Band 3 spent a first week in 26th, with a significant 61 per cent of sales made on Xbox 360. The Sims 3 PC expansion Late Night arrived in 15th.

FIFA 11 held strong to take second, last week's leader Fallout: New Vegas was third and Just Dance 2 was fourth.

Medal of Honor occupied sixth, Professor Layton and the Lost Future seventh and PES 2011 rounded the chart out in 10th.

Rock Band 3's weak performance this week underscored a flagging music genre. Rival Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock dropped again to 27th, and DJ Hero spent its second week down in 39th.

Vanquish struggled, too - dropping from 12th to 28th after two weeks on sale.

This week's winner: Fable III. EG plays the first 15 minutes.

Good to see that mediocre games with strong franchise branding still perform well in the UK charts.

    /facepalm

    Edit - Meaning TFU2 ;o) Fable 3 rocks

The best game by far, Rock Band 3, could only manage 23?! * deep sigh*
  • captainrentboy #3 2 years ago

I enjoyed Star Wars, could've done with a few more levels to visit and been an hour or two longer, but I'm a total mug for flinging shit around with force powers, it's a looker too, I'd have given it a 7/10.
About four hours into Fable 3 now, strangely it's not really grabbing me like Fable 2 did.
  • schnide #4 2 years ago

Surely Star Wars shouldn't have the exclamation mark based on previous EG form and the review of the game?
  • Dolly #5 2 years ago

Well, Rock Band 3 would have probably sold a lot more if they didn't have the supply issues with the keytars on the PS3.
Not a moan, just the reality of the situation. I was tempted to pick up the game solus still, but couldn't do with paying a tenner more to pick up the keytar at a later date.

*Edited to add that this was PS3 specific*

Rock Band 3 is 26th not 23rd. Mind burp, sorry.
  • mfnick #7 2 years ago

    Thats even worse.

I bought Fable III, and I’m loving it so far. Though I want my little bastard baby to grow up so I can open a sodding demon door…
  • cyacomini #9 2 years ago

Started Fable III on Thursday evening - was finished the main story by Sat. Still a huge amount to find but shame the story is so short.

It's not as good as Fable II - don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
  • Eraysor #10 2 years ago

As I said on the Harmonix interview article, their developer really should have waited for RB3's results to come in before he claimed people held off on GH for his game...though I did buy it!
  • Beano #11 2 years ago

Not surprised about RB3... the music genre apparently is dying :(

A shame since RB2 is incredible yet sligthly flawed.

AND WHERE IS THE RB2 SONG EXPORT PACKAGE ?!??!?
  • coolbritannia #12 2 years ago

And Fable II was pretty average, so....

"The keyboard peripheral is destined to be a stellar word-of-mouth thing though. It's aces"

I'm probably alone in this but I found the keyboard pretty disappointing, it only works on about 60 of the tracks from the pretty lacklustre Rock Band 3 tracklisting, and many of those were dull to play for the keyboard player as well. When I played the game round my friend's at the weekend to include the keyboard would cut the available 500 tracks down massively.

Pro Drums however are awesome! Really adds a new depth to what was already my favourite instrument and works on every single song from Rock Band's history.
  • rivuzu #14 2 years ago

Rock Band 3'll be a slow burner. People just get intimidated by the instrument prices.

Right now, it wouldn't suprise me if they were just drumming up awareness for the Christmas present buying rush. Watch those keytars fly off the shelves then.

Or atleast, that's on my presents list!
  • GamesConnoisseur #15 2 years ago

I m loving Fabe 3 much more than I did with 2nd, or maybe its that the latest one much more fresher and immediate?!

I acknowledge the criticisms but do believe that its largely an improvement in the right direction, and a blast when co op as well. The humours of Britishness is not quite often well expressed as its does here and would love to see TimeSplitters get back on the ground as well.

  • Toothball #16 2 years ago

I'd like to have seen Rock Band 3 higher up the list, but it seems to be suffering from the same distribution issues that RB2 suffered. On Friday morning myself and three friends went to Gamestation in central Edinburgh. They seem to have only stocked two copies of the game on Xbox, presumably a similar number on PS3. I didn't have much trouble finding a copy in HMV, but shops don't seem to be making things easy.

I also picked up Fable 3 at the same time, which has proved quite pleasant so far.
  • KidCactus #17 2 years ago

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to present this as a normal top 10 list? This "article" just makes it confusing.
  • raloB #18 2 years ago

You use the first 16 digits of the download code on the back of your Rock Band 2 manual.
  • ZizouFC #20 2 years ago

Any chance of EG reviewing The Sims 3 for 360/PS3?
  • RobotRocker #21 2 years ago

When you are in a band, sometimes you don't get the interesting parts, ask the bassist. Same goes for the keyboard.

RB3 was always going to start slow compared to GH6 but it really is going to be a word of mouth game, especially when it turns up in a lot of mainstream media's Christmas lists as "The game you can actually learn to play Keyboard, Drums and Guitar in".
  • Nephirion #22 2 years ago

It's a shame the Fable series hasn't gone multiplatform by now the fact that Lionhead are a one-trick-pony is dissapointing for gamers as a whole as they appear chained to one platform, also even more dissapointing that the PC version has not specific release date still.
  • Max_Powers #23 2 years ago

DJ Hero 2 needs to be way higher on that list. It is absolutely ace.
  • Beano #24 2 years ago

@Chain Gang of Love: I did but the RB2 export pack is not available for the PS3 EU version of the game yet. It's up for the US version and for 360.

EA have since closed down the redeem page.

If people knew that "The Touch" from Transformers: The Movie was available to download, Rock Band 3 would be selling faster than free whores.

    Probably.
  • Beano #26 2 years ago

"....Rock Band 3 would be selling faster than free whores."

How can you sell something that's free? ;)

Enjoying Fable, despite it being quite rough around the edges. The victim of last minute feature changes? The dog is really getting on my nerves, the path finding seems poor with it having to make several random circles to get a lock on to where it wants to go if there are obstructions. The emotes where much better on the original game and where novel, getting very tired of having to dance or pat a cake with everyone.

Guitar hero 3 ahhhh not even been in the old box yet, waiting for my new guitar which they now tell me is a further fortnight away. Perhaps sales will pick up then. When will they learn - games that need peripherals, need peripherals!

Edit: talk about rough - even typos in the achievements "You convinced the Aurorans to to(sic) join your cause........"
Digging in 'rock textures', the amazing appears from nowhere shovel full of dirt, even in snow. Choping into your dog while idgging. your dog chasing its tale where you are digging, and quite hilariously throwing dirt all over your dog while it lays on it's back.

oh well rant over, be interesting to see how the rest of the years charts pan out.

DJ Hero the only music game I am messing with these days. I am not gonna pay £80+ anymore!

I bought the original rockband and the drums are packed away collecting dust. I am interested in the keyboard but not gonna pay the money anymore.

RB3 sales alongside GH and DJ Hero have shown the Genre is dead. RB and GH are to blame mainly as they milked it with too many releases!

I am guessing that scratch! DJ game will be cancelled as they have no chance of selling any units.

    Dear Amazon

    Where is my pre-order?
  • Eighthours #32 2 years ago

EA has never known how to handle Rock Band in the UK for some crazy reason. It'll do much, much better in the US, where the marketing and supply chain isn't so bafflingly rubbish.
  • chrisola #33 2 years ago

i want Fallot New Vegas to do well despite the flaws and bugs.... mainly because i'd like another game (which works!) on the ID tech engine and maybe even a UK \ Euro \ anywhere but USA based follow up game -- Fallout GB or something (the Isle of Man could be some sort of super enemy mutant base which you could destroy!)
  • Xardan #34 2 years ago

Well no surprise there. I mean Fable 3 is as British as it gets. Still should have sold alot more though.
  • Toothball #35 2 years ago

    @Beano

You can export RB2 tracks using the code on the back of the manual. Hit the store in RB3 and choose Redeem Code. Then enter the first sixteen characters from this code, excluding the hyphens. 800 points and an hour or so later and you will have nearly all the RB2 tracks ready and waiting.

Edit: Oh someone beat me to it.

Where is the Fable 3 review?
  • Toothball #38 2 years ago

    @Beano

Yeah, didn't see the follow ups on my first pass. They're presumably working out loads of things with the new site since there's no sign of linking at the moment. Perhaps the PS3 version is stuck in Sony's approval process?
  • makeamazing #39 2 years ago

I went to buy the game and a keyboard on Friday, but there is no stock of PS3 keybaords anywhere, so i didnt buy anything (not going to buy the software and not use it)... so thats one sale they lost this week from me, but i will be getting it when the keyboard is available in a week or two.

I wonder how many other people put off buying the software because there was availability issues.
  • Rack #40 2 years ago

Poor Rock Band 3, I hope it does better elsewhere or in the long run. It deserves far, far better than that. I'm loving the heck out of Pro Drums.

On the other hand "Any way you want it" doesn't transfer over, so screw Harmonix!
  • Beano #41 2 years ago

@Toothball : Yes - I also suspect SCEE are primary to blame here since it's only in Europa and on PS3. But still very annoying. I also purshased the Doors album pack - I was charged for it but the file could not be downloaded from the store - amateurs!
  • kangarootoo #42 2 years ago

Regards the RB2 disc export, I think something went a bit wrong this weekend and they are sorting it out.

I ppurchased both the Doors free pack and the RB2 disc export (by putting my disc code into that webby and getting a code back in return). The RB2 disc export cost £0.95 at the checkout (which seems oddly low), but when I went to download either pack the PSN store message said "no content found".

The following day I tried again, and the Doors pack worked fine. However the RB2 export had disappeared from my Reddem Code page. Trying to enter the token I was given a second time didn't work, as the code had already been used. I don't care much about my £0.95 loss, but I do care that my disc code no longer works. And the message on the export web page to check back on the 1st isn't reassuring, given that it today's date. I guess I'll check again tonight.

As for the poor performance of Rb3 in the charts, its a shame but not a huge surprise. Without pro-mode its just "more of the same with minor tweaks", which is what is killing these music games. And pro mode obviously requires a big outlay on controllers.

And the previous article "death of music games" article was midleading. Music games are doing just fine, as Just Dance 2 shows us. What is dying (if anything is "dying";) are music games that require extra peripherals.
  • Beano #43 2 years ago

@kangarootoo : Let's hope they reset the redeemed RB2 manual codes so we can get a new redeem code... which works this time :)

Lovin' Fable III - slow start, but once it opens up it feels soooo good to be back in Albion!
  • feistycheese #45 2 years ago

There are other games out other than Fallout New Vegas? Well, ill be sure to try some of them out . . . . in 6 months time.

  • ronuds #46 2 years ago

    @Nephiron

Lionhead is owned by MS - I don't think Fable will be going multiplatform anytime soon.
  • WinterSnowblind #47 2 years ago

Fable III is a far better game than the second, they essentially took all the elements from it and made them all much more indepth.. The relationships, combat, customisations, etc. The controls are tighter, there's a proper storyline this time with some really great moments and enjoyable characters.

About the only thing I didn't like was the new leveling up system, simply unlocking the rewards is a tad disappointing, it feels like this could have been done a lot better. But I wouldn't say it was any worse than the system in Fable 2 still.

  • TRUTH #50 2 years ago

Fable III is such a simplistic action title that simply involves going A to B following a path and killing everyone, and that's the same for a large amount if the side quests!...no real skill needed.
