Sony reveals PS Move facts galore
What didn't you know?
Sony has compiled a huge PlayStation Move Q&A ahead of the controller's general release next Friday.
There's not much new, but the article offers a handy accumulation of facts. What's more, Sony intends to add to the piece over time.
Had you remembered that the ideal range for the camera is between five and nine feet away? Were you aware that using Move in a sunny room may not be a good idea? No? You should have a read.
PlayStation Move will be released next Friday, 17th September. A lone Move controller will cost £34.99, PlayStation Eye camera £24.99 and PS Move sub-controller £24.99. You don't need the latter to play most Move games, though.
Sony will bundle the main Move controller and the PlayStation Eye together for £49.99. This pack also contains a disk stuffed with demos for various Move games.
Ellie Gibson took a look at two Move launch games last week. These were Start the Party and Sports Champions.
I like to, Move it.

Yes, you hold down a button and tilt the controller in the direction you want the XMB to scroll, takes a bit of getting used to though

Edit: Why pos me when I ask a question, then neg me when I look to find the answer? You're idiots. Well, 16 of you are.

The first answer says that Move exclusively works with the PS3, so obviously the next question is 'can I use it with any system other than the PS3?'
The answer to that also states it works 'with any PS3 model', so the next thing we desperately need cleared up? 'Will the PlayStation Move work with my model of the PS3 system?'
Now if they could just definitively let me know if Move works with my Wii and my 60GB launch model everything will be crystal clear...

I hate to give it to Sony, but this whole new ad campaign is brilliant.

A question like the range for Move controls for instance should be answered with more nuance. Some games read your body as well as the Move controller, others use just the Move controller, and still others only use the internal sensors. Games that use the internal sensors have no range limitation different from the DS3. Games that just use the Move controller (including depth) have to be in the field of view of the camera, and will work from 1'5" or 50cm, though 90cm is probably more convenient. Games that use your upper body will depend on your size and distance from the camera in more detail, where the miminum distance will go up to 1.6m, and can get more (say 2.5m) depending on how much the game allows you to move around or if you play with two players side by side.

The Danish online shop where I've pre-ordered also have it listed for Friday the 17th. Not sure if someone has decided to exclude Denmark from mainland Europa

No problem, it takes a while to get used to the Move® controller but it is so much faster once you're used to it. The XMB can be controlled without the EyeToy camera connected, just by the integrated SixAxiS system. (I swing my Move and manage to go from 'Users' to 'Friends' in the XMB in 0.14 secs. Try that with a DS3....

Yeah, cause it's main purpose was to navigate the XMB. *sigh*
As for you trying to say it's playing catch-up to the Wii Remote, lololololololol etc
I suggest you watch this video and get some facts in that noggin of yours.

So Sony should have held off on montion control until they could rebuild the front end of the console to work efficiently with it?
Because the front end menu is really where the cross console battles are won?
Brilliant.

One of the concerns raised with Kinect is the amount of room that it needs, compared to the average (tiny) size of British living rooms. I noticed in the video on this page that there was always plenty of space around people, and American style rooms, does Move need more space than Wii? Or will it need the same and therefore space required not be barrier to sales in UK?
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Its all about the Camera really. If it can see you and the Move controllers it dosent really matter how much room you have. And it works fine when you are sitting down to.

@Fogheart: yes, the PS Eye has a four microphone array just like Kinect. The quality of these microphones is actually higher (double the sampling rate of Kinect), but on the other hand Kinect has better spacing between the microphones, making background separation easier. I think in the end that will mean Kinect will be slightly better at determining the direction that voice is coming from (it has three microphones fairly close together on the left, and then one to the far right, and the device is much wider that the PS Eye), though the PS3's Cell processor on the other hand is better and faster at doing the necessary calculations. Under half decent conditions though, both should do equally well. Singstar has some pretty decent voice recognition by the way.

That sounds kinda rubbish for the browser. But then I never use it anyway, it's shit!
Might take a gamble and pick Move up anyway.

I just ordered Resident Evil 5 Gold Move edition myself (27,50 euro on amazon.de) and will probably get Heavy Rain also, as well as Sports Champions (will probably try the demo first though, if only to see if I have enough space in our living room for stuff like Table Tennis). Definitely look forward to trying RUSE as well, may get that (and its PSN cousin Under Siege sounds good too). Other than that I already have a few

Oh dear god. So now I need a large room... with no windows? I'm looking forward to Move and Kinect, personally, but not so much that I'm going to go crawl off into the cellar about it.

Considering all the FUD that's following Kinect about I'm suprised that MS haven't followed suit with a similar FAQ.
Edit: I'm sure it will work adequately if it's at shin height, but with modern TV's which are too thin to balance anything on it better be.

I had a similar concern but the PS Eye is quite easily kept in place on the top of a HDTV, with it's rubber based pad and the cable offering some weight balance it's strangely capable of being sat in place without any sort of permanent fixture if positioned correctly.
If needed some double sided tape isn't too much of a problem.

Of course they all jumped on the band wagon after nintendo's success, but even considering that i tink sony seem to have put alot more time an thought into this 'gimmick' and there version seems to be a much stronger platform, nintendo's included.

Yep, I saw a YouTube video a few days ago that showed the PS Eye simply "hanging" over the top of the TV, with the cable providing counterbalance on the back. If I recall correctly the video was actually from someone from Sony's Eye/Move development team.

And couldn't you do XMB nav with the existing PS3 SixAxis tilt controller?
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Now these same issues arise for Move, optimum distance 5 ft and problems with light conditions, and the same people who constantly argue against the Kinect are perfectly happy with the Sony controller.
Crazy world.

I am not so sure about the distance issue you talk about, so cannot fully comment on that.
