UK chart: Mafia II still top dog

Metroid: Other M misses top 10.

Mafia II has topped the UK all-formats chart for a second consecutive week.

Fellow receiver of 4/10 on Eurogamer, Kane & Lynch 2, remains in second.

The big-name newcomers this week were HAWX 2 and Metroid: Other M. Ubisoft's aerial combat game managed to scrape 10th, but Nintendo and Team Ninja's take on the Metroid licence managed only 12th.

Wii Sports Resort was third, Toy Story 3 fourth and Red Dead Redemption fifth.

From there, the top 10 was rounded out by Just Dance, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Sniper: Ghost Warrior (2/10, remmeber), Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and HAWX 2.

    Why are people buying this fucking shite game?
  • DonnieDarko333 #2 2 years ago

    Metroid: Other M didn't make top 10? Not good.....great game as well! Just goes to show that somewhere Nintendo is doing something wrong to get that non-casual market...
  • Goodfella #3 2 years ago

    @Ryboy

    It's not shit.

    As for Metroid, is it any surprise, only Wii Shovelware seems to make the top 10, and any game with Mario in the title
  • alroste #4 2 years ago

    @Ryboy Have you played it or basing your opinion from the Eurogamer review?
  • darkmorgado #5 2 years ago

    It's a shame that Metroid hasn't made the chart. Hopefully word of mouth will make it a slow-burn release though, as a lot of Nintendo stuff seems to be these days. It's not like they haven't advertised the crap out of it...
  • Shinetop #6 2 years ago

    But Eurogamer, how can this be? I thought you told us this game was awful? Seems like it not only has the same faults as GTA4, it also has the sales figures of GTA4. Perhaps it should also get the score of GTA4?

    "Fellow receiver of 4/10 on Eurogamer, Kane & Lynch 2, remains in second. "

    LOL
  • beastmaster #8 2 years ago

    Perhaps they should start putting the EG 4/10 ratings on the boxes.

    @Shinetop

    Without defending EGs reviews, I would like to point out that sales do not equal quality.

    If that were true we would all be chomping at the bit to play Carnival Games 2.
  • Ryboy #10 2 years ago

    @Goodfella - In my opinion it's fucking crap. I could't agree with the EG review more. Glad I didn't shell out my hard earned queens faces for it.
  • brseg #11 2 years ago

    Roll on autumn for some decent games...
  • UncleLou #12 2 years ago

    Why are people buying this fucking shite game?

    It's actually one of the better games topping the charts.
  • bad09 #13 2 years ago

    @Ryboy

    Fair enough if you don't like it and agree with the joke EG review Mafia is clearly not for you, but that doesn't actually make it a shite game. Personally I'm bloody loving it and think it's brilliant and many others are to :)

  • miiiguel #14 2 years ago

    Glad I forgot to cancel my pre-order, realy enjoying the game.
  • Goodfella #15 2 years ago

    Fair enough, you're entitled to your opinion but how did you reach your conclusion, as it appears you haven't played the full game?

    Have you started rating your own spelling? =P
  • J0rdan_KZ #18 2 years ago

    It is a travesty that Metroid didn't even get into the top 10 in the charts. It's probably my favourite Metroid game since Prime 1.

    I think I'm the only person I've talked to that actually enjoyed the storyline (and yes, even the voice acting). Sure, there were some controller niggles, but it was a fantastic action game.
  • menage #19 2 years ago

    I would have bought M if I had a Wii.
  • darkmorgado #20 2 years ago

    Try games once in a while, often the ones that get hammered turn out to be the best.

    I feel guilty admitting that I actually rather enjoyed Too Human.
  • darkmorgado #21 2 years ago

    I would have bought M if I had a Wii.

    I've had it since Wednesday (Shopto FTW) but haven't played it yet. It's been added to the rapidly growing pile of games I own but haven't got round to playing yet. Case Zero took up a couple of evenings, and I spent yesterday soldiering through Burnout Paradise and finishing off Limbo.

    Might give it a crack this afternoon.
  • menage #22 2 years ago

    @Darkmorgado

    I agree, been playing The Last Remnant for 2 months on and off now, and it wipes the floor with FFXIII story and gameplay wise. Not in the looks of course, but who cares if the game is shit.

    It's dead cheap and once past the initial boring JRPG intro stages it really is a great game.
  • sonicyoda #23 2 years ago

    Well I bought Other M because I care about my Wii. It's a healthy little fellow you know.
  • darkmorgado #24 2 years ago

    @menage

    I don't have Last Remnant, but I did pick up Resonance of Fate in the HMV sale the other week. Reviews about the puzzle-piece game map piqued my interest. That, and you can never have too much steampunk.
  • midnight_walker #25 2 years ago

    I thought Mafia II was great - not awesome but still good nonetheless, and K&L 2 is alright too. Nothing to write home about, sure, but 4/10 for either game is a bit harsh.
  • menage #26 2 years ago

    @Drakmorgado

    Resonance looks good as well, I think that may be my summer draught of 2011 game:D

    I've put in Valkyria Chronicles just yesterday. which is getting quite good.
  • darkmorgado #27 2 years ago

    @menage

    I've considered picking up Valkyria Chronicles, but I'm a bit burned out on Tactical RPGs recently, having spent around 100 hours on FF Tactics DS, FF Tactics PSP, Disgaea 3 and Disgaea 2 on PSP.

    I tend to go through phases of game genres. At the moment I'm very much in a racing phase, so I'm putting loads of hours into Burnout Paradise, Motorstorm, Outrun 2, etc. But starting to get burnt out on that and moving into adventure and platform.

    Hm. I seem to have drifted offtopic somewhat.
  • menage #28 2 years ago

    Ah, to hell with the topic. It's only going to be boooo for Metroid and Mafia 2 sucks or doesn't anyway.:p

  • darkmorgado #29 2 years ago

    lol

    Feel free to add me on XBL and psn btw, my tag is the same as here (though I think my psn one has some weird capitalisation in it).

    Any multiplayer games you need a hand with? I buy most of my games mainly for single-player, so I usually end up with truckloads of stuff I haven't done (read: achievements) because I'm a poor johnny no-mates online.
  • FooAtari #30 2 years ago

    While reading through this months Games TM review of the past decade I found it quite interesting comparing their highest scoring games for each year to the top 10 selling games that they printed. Most years there was quite a large difference with most of the top 10 selling games not featuring in their top scoring games.
  • darkmorgado #31 2 years ago

    @FooAtari,

    Yeah I noticed that as well. Who wants to be a millionnaire at NUMBER FRICKING ONE?

    Sad times.

    I'm almost tempted to buy every copy of Games that I see, just to get the covers. I got the Starcraft one after spending 15 minutes in Smiths umming and ahhing.

    I hope they release some sort of postcard collection, like EDGE did of their 200 covers.
  • Lee_Morris #32 2 years ago

    Why are people buying that sniper game. Where's the taste!?
  • Darren #33 2 years ago

    Well I would have bought Metroid Other M had it supported the Nunchuk's analogue stick. I personally cannot stand using the Wiimote's D-pad as I find it uncomfortable for long periods and way too small and fiddly for my large thumb. Why on earth Team Ninja couldn't have added analogue stick support as well I don't know because almost every review had mentioned the oddness of the controls. You have to point at the screen to use the first person view from what I understand so the Nunchuk/Wiimote combo would have meant that you wouldn't have to keep changing the controller orientation during play (just as you don't in Super Mario Galaxy 2 for example) plus would have allowed for movement in that view too, something this game doesn't allow you to do.

    Stupid developers and their insistence on catering for casual gamers. Shame as well because the game looks otherwise very good.
  • FooAtari #34 2 years ago

    @darkmorgado

    From the choice I had in Tesco I went with the Worms cover.

    Then a couple of days later I saw the Elite cover in another shop, that would have probably been my first choice!
  • darkmorgado #35 2 years ago

    @FooAtari

    Yeah I saw that one. It was a tossup between Starcraft and Cannon Fodder for me. I do wish that I'd seen a Vib Ribbon one though, I would have nabbed that immediately.
  • darkmorgado #36 2 years ago

    Neg fairy has paid a visit here as well.

    Is that you, Android2010?

    K&L 2 is selling as most Game stores and HMV are selling it for around 20 quid. I guess even a 4/10 game becomes worth a look if it's cheap enough.

    Metroid Other M is excellent - even the cut scenes aren't as bad as I had feared given the EG and Edge reviews.
  • menage #39 2 years ago

    @darkmorgado.

    Cool. I'll add you later.

    Not much MP for me, although I do venture out with BLUR or UC2 once in a while. That's the only two things I've really invested in.

    Metroid other M is great - i'm only a few hours in but really enjoying it, sad to see it's not selling well.

  • Segnit #41 2 years ago

    To be clear, I have no opinion of Mafia 2, either good or bad. And going by his comments in this thread, Ryboy has a pretty poor standard for comments, so I definitely don't do not agree and am not defending him, but:

    Goodfella: "Fair enough, you're entitled to your opinion but how did you reach your conclusion, as it appears you haven't played the full game? "

    The quote above is a clever play of words. The first part in that quote acknowledges that it's fair to have an opinion. But here's the thing, in the 2nd part of the quote you play up Ryboy's comment as something more then just an opinion... a conclusion. In other words you've just setup an extremely subtle trap for Ryboy. And I want to say that this is indeed clever. But...

    The notion that you need to complete something in order to have an informed opinion or to make a valid point, is false. Yes, although reviewers must absolutely finish games before giving a review score (because they are paid to do this, unless otherwise stated); at the same time that's not necessary in a casual discussion forum.

    I'm sure we agree on that, especially because it would mean double standards otherwise. But I just needed to make that point since I very frequently see good opinions and valid arguments discarded because of bogus qualifiers.

    "I feel guilty admitting that I actually rather enjoyed Too Human."

    Nothing to feel guilty about! Just gutted they're not doing a Too Human two, too.
    Still missing the final achievement on that for the elite armour set.

    "Metroid: Other M misses top 10"

    See, Wii owners? THIS IS WHY YOU CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!
  • menage #45 2 years ago

    There aren't enough Wii owner's who like nice things apparantly. But then again, Okami sold shit on PS2 as well, so it's just ingorance and bad taste as well.

    I don't think Metroid: Other M is as good as the Prime trilogy but then it takes extremely good games to beat them anyway!

    I love how they have the story in it now but I sometimes find there is to much cinema in the game and if people haven't played the Metroid series the storyline will have them extremely confused. All the actions you can do now are cool. Just shorter and easier than I'd have hoped.

    At the end of the day it's still a great game and worth buying :-)
  • UncleLou #47 2 years ago

    "The notion that you need to complete something in order to have an informed opinion or to make a valid point, is false"

    But he never said Ryboy should have completed it. All he did was speak of the "full game" - as opposed to the demo, surely. And if we're being as pedantic here as you obviously want people to be, Ryboy should have spoken of the "demo", not the "game". That's what I do, at least. I say "I thought the demo was shit", not "the game is shit", if all I've tried is the demo.

    UncleLou: "But he never said Ryboy should have completed it."

    That's true. I did make an assumption and jumped one step ahead. But then again you are speaking for someone else when you really shouldn't. Rather then speak for him, perhaps it would've been better to just point out that it's not wise to assume things.

    And regarding what Ryboy should've said, well... as I said the first time around, I can't defend the guy as his choice of words were pretty poor. I mean, even if he does have a good point and has finished the game, he just didn't express himself well, and I think the negative marks show. We're in total agreement about this.

    And just to be clear, Goodfella's 2nd post was well constructed. The guy made a short but good post.
  • FenderMaster #50 2 years ago

    most people don't care for sci-fi, spaceships etc, and prefer more organic environments. before i first tried a metroid game i thought the series looked very unappealing.

    Nintendo needs to get the game out there, let people try it, a lengthy demo might really help...
