Last month Gas Powered Games CEO Chris Taylor admitted he was "betting the company" on the crowdsourced action RPG/RTS hybrid Wildman. Well, it looks like he bet and lost if his statement holds true, as today Gas Powered announced that it's canceling the Wildman Kickstarter following its poor performance that failed to meet half of its $1.1 million goal with only four days to go.
"At this point, it makes sense for us to focus our attention on other ways to keep Gas Powered Games running," said the developer in its final update. "Unfortunately, we are unable to share any specifics in public. When we have news to share, we will be posting it on our site. If you want status updates, or if you want to continue discussing Wildman and/or this Kickstarter, please consider migrating over to forums.gaspowered.com.
So does this mean Gas Powered is good and done? Not necessarily, though it certainly puts whatever remaining staff are left in a bind. Yesterday Taylor told Rock, Paper, Shotgun that at least one publisher expressed interest in lending Wildman additional funding, but only if the project met its initial Kickstarter goal.
Gas Powered Games had more than one game almost over the finishing line when a publisher pulled the rug out from under it.
Update: Gas Powered Games founder Chris Taylor has issued a video update explaining the situation.
Evidently he felt uneasy about gambling his employees' livelihood on Wildman, because if it failed he'd have to shut down the company and no one would receive their severance or unpaid PTO. Thus, he decided the merciful thing to do would be to lay off "a substantial number of the team" and rehire them back if they're still available if and when the Wildman Kickstarter hits its goal. Given the bleak situation Taylor is wondering if it's even worth continuing the Kickstarter campaign as people may have given up on the company, so he's asking people to vote with their comments.
Currently the reception to his stark assessment of the situation has been overwhelmingly positive, if the comments on the Wildman Kickstarter are anything to go by.
Gas Powered Games has shared a fairly long video of its new PC game Wildman in action.
Is it Chris Packham?
Update: The Wildman Kickstarter is up. After a scant couple of hours its already at $21,465 towards its $1,100,000 goal with 32 days to go before its 15th February deadline. Not too shabby.
Original story: Gas Powered Games - creator of Dungeon Siege and Supreme Commander - has unveiled a new title called Wildman.
It's a PC game that hopes to merge RPG and RTS gameplay. You'll be Wildman, a Homo sapien who bludgeons other people with his giant bone, learning new technology from your vanquished foes as you go.
