can't wait. Just out of interest Kristan, what do you use to cap these vids?
  • dr_shambles #3 2 years ago

This looks really dull compared to the original.
  • Beano #4 2 years ago

Loved the first game - but this looks quite dull by 2010 standards. Will try the demo myself before making up my mind :)

    Crackdown: Left 4 Dead Edition.

    Is it really that cynical?

Wow. Letdown 2. That really doesn't look anywhere near as good as it should do. :(
  • onezeonx #7 2 years ago

tbh shocked how poor it looks!!

loved this 1st one but seems like Crackdown 1.5!!
  • muscleblade #8 2 years ago

Loved the first. This looks kind of repetitive though.
  • Marshall2008 #9 2 years ago

Game looks ace, but seriously, who is the noob you have playing? Looks like they have never played on a console before.
  • glaeken #10 2 years ago

Kind of odd to see someone play Crackdown with so little jumping. I guess maybe their jump was still really under powered.
  • darkmorgado #11 2 years ago

    @Marshall2008

I think you'll find that's Kristan Reed, one of the site's longest-serving and prolific contributors.
  • Der_tolle_Emil #12 2 years ago

All I want is a big city with lots of orbs to collect. I enjoyed that in Crackdown way more than the actual story. Once everyone was dead the game became even more fun. Very relaxing.
  • Beano #13 2 years ago

It's the same city as the first game, right?
  • Chazmeister #14 2 years ago

They can't win can they. They give people what they want, which is more of the same but with more bells and whistles and they complain, and if they changed things up too much they would just complain even more so.
  • kangarootoo #15 2 years ago

Hmmmm. I loved Crackdown, but this immediately looks just sort of different. Maybe its 'cos its night time and all brown and flat looking. It just seems a bit uninteresting. Could just be the gameplay we are shown though. I shall try the demo all the same.
  • theonlyix #16 2 years ago

4 player coop, im sold! But ill try the demo before buy =)
  • darkmorgado #17 2 years ago

Just played the demo - it's restricted to the Docks area by the way, which is why everything looks a bit dull and brown. I managed to get 51 orbs, did a rooftop race, a car race, and got my hands on some tasty ordnance. It really is just like crackdown, but with loads more enemies = more mayhem.
The graphics aren't a massive improvement on Crackdown 1, but that's offset somewhat by the cel-shading. Draw distance seems about the same to me, though some of the particle effects and explosions are a lot better. Textures could be sharper, but hey, it's Crackdown. Who gives a shit about graphics when you can jump on to the top of a 100ft building, swat someone off with a lamppost before blowing up a truck and killing another 20 people in the space of 10 seconds?
  • BillyBrush #18 2 years ago

1st apparent change is it doesn't zoom over the shoulder when aiming like before...touch less dramatic but that could be good for having more control of moving around and jumping about whilst aiming.
  • Freek #19 2 years ago

Open world games tend to deal out a little portion of the early game as a demo, that rarely ever works out well. You don't get any of the cool stuff the full game does and it tends to underwelm.
Add onto that the fact that demos are often based on an old build and you end up with a dissaster.
  • Mockerre #20 2 years ago

And no system link coop. They said it would take "half a days work" (it's a quote btw), but they didn't do it anyway.
  • Darren #21 2 years ago

I will certainly give this demo a try but I thought the first game was very overrated personally. It was tremendous fun for the first few hours but the repetitive nature of the missions coupled with the fact that you could see everything the game had to offer within four hours meant the game was very short-lived for me. Once I'd levelled up, assaulted a hide-out and killed one of the bosses and climbed the tallest building there was little else to keep me playing. The vehicles were no fun to drive and in the end I just ran around on foot. I think the biggest flaw with the first game though was the lack of a captivating story mode because for me the sandbox element is an aside not the main reason for playing these games.

Still I hope for more substance from the sequel, particularly after playing the sublime Red Dead Redemption, which, for me, represents the finest example of the sandbox genre married to a really decent single player campaign.
  • Devange #22 2 years ago

that demo looks boring, the one that plays it isn't very good at it, the looks of the game are simple etc. etc.
    Not gonna get it.
  • Geordiemp #23 2 years ago

Wow, if there was no orbs or the voice of the narrator would never known that was Crackdown. It seemed so slow and unresponsive.

Are they using the same engine ?

Crackdown is running really fast, jumping fast, it was like watching someone play a crackdown beta in slow motion.

Nooooo, what have they done ! My son is going to be gutted, Crackdown is his fav game we play together having rocket battles and just carrying on.

Maybe it gets faster later on as you level up, god I hope so.

Not pretty, but it looks like a lot of fun.

Why isn't this coming to PC?
  • darkmorgado #25 2 years ago

    Geordieimp

Don't worry mate, within 15 minutes of playing the demo I was jumping over buildings and stuff. It's the same crackdown we all know and love. Kristan just didn't seem to go after the orbs in the posted vid, which was a bit strange seeing as that's what Crackdown is all about really.

On a side note, the vehicle handling is MUCH improved over the first game. It's now actually fun to drive cars!
  • Geordiemp #26 2 years ago

    ^^

Oh thank god, it was painful to watch him lumbering around
  • PlugMonkey #27 2 years ago

It looks a bit arse, and the shooting seems repetitive even after 10 mins, but the orbs...oh the orbs! I feel like a junkie who's just had his first fix in years.

Crackdown was an orb collecting game with gang boss side-quests. You can't judge a game on its side-quests.

@ Devange: Are you seriously going to judge a game based on a video of the free playable demo?
  • rarehobo #28 2 years ago

it Looks like a badly made ps1 game and that auto lock-on is laughable, oh well it is an xbox game after all.
  • Machiavellian #29 2 years ago

Crackdown is your diablo of open world games. Getting the orbs and leveling up played a big role in my enjoyment. Finding all kinds of ways of destruction was also a hook. The game does not look very hot on the graphical front but I believe the 60FPS, huge open world with all kind of destruction, including a huge load of enemies on screen may be the reason.

Looking at this gameplay vid definitely do not make you want to purchase the game so I will have to play the demo myself to get a better feel for the game.
  • Physically_Insane #30 2 years ago

I think it looks a bit shit and slow because Kirstan is so obviously shit at this game and doesn't have a clue how to play it properly. It was like watching my mum play it.

Although I still believe they've taken a step backwards graphically.

  • actionfitz #31 2 years ago

wow Kristan really doesn't like exploding barrels eh...
  • t8yman #32 2 years ago

well Ive played it for an hour, and I think its gonna be as good as the original, half an hour time limit sucks though - I could maybe manage rank5 in one of the abilities, but its so damn quick to timeout. I'm no gaming pro, so it will just be 30 minute attempts at maxing stuff out tbh. Deffo a day 1 buy. If you enjoyed CD1 you should love this.
  • makeamazing #33 2 years ago

I have to admit it does look retro.... reminds me a bit of a MMO game... in the way it plays. Is it alot like the original in gameplay terms?
  • t8yman #34 2 years ago

its pretty much identical gameplay wise. But I reiterate, the 30 min limit is too short. Even setting it at "fanny" difficulty, I couldnt reach any higher than about 3.8 on the agility, and that was without firing a shot.
  • Vortex808 #35 2 years ago

I can't wait. How many sleeps until the 9th july?

Edit: Just hearing the 'close to an orb' sound raises the goosebumps. Why is he just shooting people instead of doing a smidge of orb-hunting?

  • menage #36 2 years ago

Played it for 30 minutes, didn't see the appeal of shooting random anonymous gangs while aiming at a barrel instead of a dude half the time.

The style of the environment art looks really strange, like a step back from the original. I remember being pretty impressed the art of the original with nice lighting effects apparent in the environment especially at night when everyting lit up but even in day time.

This all just looks quite plain. And those bullet casings look like they come out the gun in the same repeatable pattern is also strange.
  • BillyBrush #38 2 years ago

Quite liked it, nothing revolutionary...but it seems a better mix of lock on (vs the guys with guns) and using free aim (the freaks), which is better, because the lock on...whilst Ok is the same as in the 1st pretty much.
  • Vyggo #39 2 years ago

Honest question: is the strength of this game the co-op? This video makes it looks like a poor mans Just Cause 2, maybe even Prototype...
  • TheDudesRug #40 2 years ago

I found this incredibly dissapointing. I loved the first but really couldn't settle in with the sterile atmosphere, frustrating targeting and appalling car handling. Perhaps this is a gem when played longer, or perhaps they will fix what I perceive to be wrong. I doubt both. Either way I'd have to be pretty bored to even consider purchasing this.
  • muscleblade #41 2 years ago

I must say that i played the demo a lot differently than Kristan and got a lot more out of it. Orb collecting is a must for leveling up agility so by the end of the demo i could run faster and jump much higher.
  • tossetaz #42 2 years ago

Played the Demo, i thought it was fun this time around as well - the buildings could look better but it's not really that important.

I loved the Fisrt game and absolutley killed it, 1250G to boot but after playing the Demo of No.2 i found it very lack lustre, maybe its the fact that its still fresh in my mind from playing the first one. The driving is a major step back for me and don't care less what anyone else says, the radar for finding Orbs just takes away the element of searching for them by yourself, granted they were a pain in the arse but it was more satisfying when you managed to get the last one of the little buggers. Just wasn't as impressed after waiting all these years for the sequel to one of my favourite games of all time.
  • dubdivision #45 2 years ago

Crackdown came into its own after a few upgrades to your skill set. This video could never portray that, or the orb searching.
  • oceanclub #46 2 years ago

The first one was enjoyable for a while, but got repetitive fairly quickly, especially the combat. Whereas I'm now over 33 hours into Just Cause 2, a similar open-world game, and not remotely bored yet simply because there are so many more possibilities.

  • hiruu #47 2 years ago

The demo was fun...and the commentary was the probably the best part of the game.
  • deadlock17 #48 2 years ago

Looks a bit crap. Didn't everyone say that the first Crackdown was 10x better in Co-Op?
