UK chart: Mass Effect 2 takes lead
MAG features, Tatsunoko bombs.
BioWare's galactic PC and Xbox 360 RPG Mass Effect 2 has entered the UK all-formats chart at number one.
The EA-published sequel sold twice as many copies as Mass Effect 1, which was published by Microsoft. And BioWare's popularity meant a boost for Dragon Age: Origins this week, which re-entered the chart at 31.
Sony's big PS3 exclusive MAG debuted in fourth, and Capcom's fighting game Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars missed the top 40 and finished sixth on the Wii chart.
Previous All-Formats leader Just Dance was pushed into second ahead of Modern Warfare 2 in third, Wii Sports Resort in fifth and Wii Fit Plus in sixth. FIFA 10, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Army of Two: The 40th Day and Avatar rounded out the top 10.
Further down, Darksiders and Bayonetta continued to fall - the former to 18th and the latter to 25th - and Capcom's Dark Void ran out of fuel and toppled off the Top 40 after two weeks on sale. Last summer's Batman: Arkham Asylum also disappeared.

Exactly. It was remiss of EG to also not mention that MAG and Mass Effect 2 were only released on Friday too.
Bad EG!

I did see a lot of advertising and banners around the net though (even on this very site). While it's true that internet-goers are not the majority, I thought they were enough to at least make it reach the Top 40. Perhaps the problem is that Tatsunoko characters are only well known among adults.

Still, I used to be an N-tard but I'm starting to get really annoyed by the Wii demographic. I don't mind the casual games, but good games deserve good sales. I did my part for Mass Effect 2.

Not to mention it is online only. I'm having a lot of fun with it but it's not mainstream and it's not very accessible/friendly. I expected it to bomb badly here and do ok in the US mainly off the back of the dev reputation (Zipper).

Frankly that's better than I thought it would do. If you don't advertise Wii games on TV or have strong instore marketing....they won't sell (unless you have a major hook for the casual market). Banners on sites like Eurogamer are largely a waste of money.

Not if he bought it from GAME, they won't take it back if it's been opened.

Well about the sales never had a doubt about mass effect 2 it really is great totally deserves the number 1 slot and surprised at MAG i tried the beta a few weeks ago and didn't think much of it. It's just funny how my ps3 only friend says that mass effect 2 is not very good and MAG is the best online game ever even better than MW2 oh well......(sigh). Uncharted 2 is still holding strong glad cos its a great game.

is a Tatsunoko property - however, though they did try to include them somewhere in the game, it just couldn't be done, apparently. If it had, there's the meagrest of chances I'd then know/remember/care about the characters in this, that aren't Capcom regulars.
I also wonder, though, had it been released on one of the HD platforms, if Microsoft/Sony would have given it more publicity than Nintendo appear to have?

Edit: So even having them included in some background somewhere was too difficult? Yeah right.

I think piracy is also a major reason why the hardcore Wii games don't sell as well these days (same with the DS). Your hardcore consumer knows by now how to make "back-ups"....casuals are thankfully less informed.
Hence the reason why a hardcore title like 'House of The Dead Overkill' was pirated more times than it was purchased (same with Punch-Out).
Perhaps the best thing to do with niche hardcore Wii games (and DS games for that matter) is to make them only playable with a peripheral that comes bundled with the software. At least that way the hardcore would be forced to buy the game if they wanted to play it.

Amazing game.
Am shitting myself that I got it Thursday night, started at a level becoming of a level 60, maxed out cash veteran of the first game having completed all mineral/resources side quests, and played throughout the day Fri, Sat and Sun. Now after doing most of the N7 missions and playing through the plot, recruitment and loyalty missions of ME2, I just have the final loyalty mission and presumably the end game to go... And then it's gone! Until I import my very different Shep and try again...
Also there's at least 2 DLCs incoming - kicking off w the Hammerhead hover tank (and therefore presumably a string of *improved* Mako style missions) and Kasumi the 12th character in your dirty dozen who's currently "not been unconfirmed" (but Google her or search for the debug gameplay on Youtube - auf Deutsch). After all, what else did you think the Port observation deck was sitting there for?
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Agreed. I didn't really expect it to make even the top 10, so I'm pleasantly surprised to see it at No.4 in the all-formats, and 3 by platform.
I myself had a play in the beta and wasn't overly enamoured with it as I found it kind of bland overall. But then, it was all a bit of a clusterfuck anyway when I played due to the lack of any real teamwork (and the fact that most players on my various teams didn't seem to have any microphones/headsets). That said, given enough investment of time I can really see the potential to fall for the game. Unfortunately, I personally don't have that amount of time to invest in MP gaming anymore and therefore won't be buying it. But it warms hy heart when I see a new IP, especially one that is fairly decent, have some success.
