UK chart: Mass Effect 2 takes lead

MAG features, Tatsunoko bombs.

BioWare's galactic PC and Xbox 360 RPG Mass Effect 2 has entered the UK all-formats chart at number one.

The EA-published sequel sold twice as many copies as Mass Effect 1, which was published by Microsoft. And BioWare's popularity meant a boost for Dragon Age: Origins this week, which re-entered the chart at 31.

Sony's big PS3 exclusive MAG debuted in fourth, and Capcom's fighting game Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars missed the top 40 and finished sixth on the Wii chart.

Previous All-Formats leader Just Dance was pushed into second ahead of Modern Warfare 2 in third, Wii Sports Resort in fifth and Wii Fit Plus in sixth. FIFA 10, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Army of Two: The 40th Day and Avatar rounded out the top 10.

Further down, Darksiders and Bayonetta continued to fall - the former to 18th and the latter to 25th - and Capcom's Dark Void ran out of fuel and toppled off the Top 40 after two weeks on sale. Last summer's Batman: Arkham Asylum also disappeared.

Bit of a niche game though.

I think thats bloody well done from MAG, quite surprised.
• BabyJesus #4 2 years ago

Well deserved Bioware.

"Just putting it a bit into perspective, which EG failed to do."

Exactly. It was remiss of EG to also not mention that MAG and Mass Effect 2 were only released on Friday too.

Bad EG!
• Malek86 #6 2 years ago

I doubt Capcom cares about perspectives though.

I did see a lot of advertising and banners around the net though (even on this very site). While it's true that internet-goers are not the majority, I thought they were enough to at least make it reach the Top 40. Perhaps the problem is that Tatsunoko characters are only well known among adults.

Mass Effect!, Mass Effect!, Mass Effect!, Mass Effect!, Mass Effect!, Mass Effect!, Mass Effect!, Mass Effect!,
• jag10 #8 2 years ago

considering MAG is only on PS3, and it's not for noobs, 4 is quite good.
• spekkeh #9 2 years ago

Eh, I'm an adult, and I remember when Street Fighter wasn't niche at all (paying a hundred quid for it for the snes), but I have absolutely no clue who Tatsunoko are.

Still, I used to be an N-tard but I'm starting to get really annoyed by the Wii demographic. I don't mind the casual games, but good games deserve good sales. I did my part for Mass Effect 2.

I'm nearly finished playthrough one and im still excited about what im gonna do next time.
Im thinking Evil female Engineer :D

From what I've played so far (about 4 hrs worth) Mass Effect 2 deserves top spot this week. The improvements to the game are really noticeable for me, I tried once again a few weeks back to get into Mass Effect 1 and I couldn't do it and yet this is just so simple, with regards to the controls and levelling up, and accessible in comparison. And the graphics for the most part are fantastic. It's just a shame that the guy I created to look like me, who actually looked quite a bit like me on the creation screen, once thrust into the actual game ended up looking like an insane person :/

What a fucking game Mass Effect 2 is, unbelievably good.
• DrDamn #14 2 years ago

@Widge & @jag10
Not to mention it is online only. I'm having a lot of fun with it but it's not mainstream and it's not very accessible/friendly. I expected it to bomb badly here and do ok in the US mainly off the back of the dev reputation (Zipper).
• TRUTH #15 2 years ago

MAG is sooooooo shit!...I'm off to return it.
• CallousB #16 2 years ago

Tatsunoko came in at 37 in the by format top 40.

Frankly that's better than I thought it would do. If you don't advertise Wii games on TV or have strong instore marketing....they won't sell (unless you have a major hook for the casual market). Banners on sites like Eurogamer are largely a waste of money.
• Widge #17 2 years ago

Chart Update:

-1 sale from TRUTH takes MAG from 4th to its new position of 4th.
• TopKatt #18 2 years ago

^^

Not if he bought it from GAME, they won't take it back if it's been opened.

I've played about ten hours of ME1. Nobody told me you could create a character at the start so now i'm stuck with dull as dishwater shepherd!! Is there anyway of changing later on or do i need to start again? Please help
• miiiguel #21 2 years ago

Need to start over.

Tip for the future: read the manual or be nosey.
• metalmike25 #22 2 years ago

I'm a man, we don't read manuals, it's a sign of weakness
• miiiguel #23 2 years ago

I usually go with the "nosey" option myself, I tend to click on every option.

How can you miss the massive "Create what Shepard looks like" section of the game after the intro?!

Mine looks like Hulk Hogan with shaved hair and his name is Lucy.
• fjharps #26 2 years ago

I'm pretty sure you can change his face at the beginning of the second game if that is any consolation i kept the same look but it does give you the option after the ........... oops no spoilers lol.

Well about the sales never had a doubt about mass effect 2 it really is great totally deserves the number 1 slot and surprised at MAG i tried the beta a few weeks ago and didn't think much of it. It's just funny how my ps3 only friend says that mass effect 2 is not very good and MAG is the best online game ever even better than MW2 oh well......(sigh). Uncharted 2 is still holding strong glad cos its a great game.

me2 is great.

Kinda like a Gears of War style RPG, really impressed with the combat improvements

I found out the other day that Samurai Pizza Cats http://www .youtube.com/watch?v=bXiJYcK4-GU

is a Tatsunoko property - however, though they did try to include them somewhere in the game, it just couldn't be done, apparently. If it had, there's the meagrest of chances I'd then know/remember/care about the characters in this, that aren't Capcom regulars.

I also wonder, though, had it been released on one of the HD platforms, if Microsoft/Sony would have given it more publicity than Nintendo appear to have?

• TonyHarrison #29 2 years ago

Capcom have clearly done a stand up job advertising Tatsunoko, I had no idea it was even ready for release...
• Darren #30 2 years ago

I can't think of a game more deserving of the top spot than Mass Effect 2. Well done, BioWare, and thank you for a terrific game.
• fjharps #31 2 years ago

It just shows how less and less actual gamers don't buy games for the wii anymore. Now let them release capcom fitness or something similar and it will probably top the charts cos at least for me unfortunately thats the way the wii has headed for. Okami, Madworld, No more Heroes and lots more of this type they will never make an impact all of them great games by the way. I've always liked nintendo for their exclusives but this generation proper gaming wise they haven't delivered. But then again who blames them they are making millions with that market.

I loved the Samurai Pizza Cats!

Edit: So even having them included in some background somewhere was too difficult? Yeah right.

Have to join in with the ME2 love-in. Possibly the best game I've played... ever. It's like Syd Mead designed a universe and populated it with interesting Star Wars characters. I'm 16 hours in and absolutely loving it. Despite it coming on two discs, I fear the experience will be over all too quickly - followed by another two-year wait for the sequel. GotY 2012!

• CallousB #35 2 years ago

"It just shows how less and less actual gamers don't buy games for the wii anymore."

I think piracy is also a major reason why the hardcore Wii games don't sell as well these days (same with the DS). Your hardcore consumer knows by now how to make "back-ups"....casuals are thankfully less informed.

Hence the reason why a hardcore title like 'House of The Dead Overkill' was pirated more times than it was purchased (same with Punch-Out).

Perhaps the best thing to do with niche hardcore Wii games (and DS games for that matter) is to make them only playable with a peripheral that comes bundled with the software. At least that way the hardcore would be forced to buy the game if they wanted to play it.

about 14 hours in to mass effect and I've got to say this could well be my favourite game of all time. Its just on a whole other level to anything else I've played. Plus the fact that it looks like bladerunner doesn't hurt either. Amazing game.
• Moribundman #40 2 years ago

Mass Effect 2 was only released on Friday in Europe too.

Amazing game.

Am shitting myself that I got it Thursday night, started at a level becoming of a level 60, maxed out cash veteran of the first game having completed all mineral/resources side quests, and played throughout the day Fri, Sat and Sun. Now after doing most of the N7 missions and playing through the plot, recruitment and loyalty missions of ME2, I just have the final loyalty mission and presumably the end game to go... And then it's gone! Until I import my very different Shep and try again... ;-)

Also there's at least 2 DLCs incoming - kicking off w the Hammerhead hover tank (and therefore presumably a string of *improved* Mako style missions) and Kasumi the 12th character in your dirty dozen who's currently "not been unconfirmed" (but Google her or search for the debug gameplay on Youtube - auf Deutsch). After all, what else did you think the Port observation deck was sitting there for? ;-)

@KingAntoine, "MAG is doing well for a new ip exclusive on a multi-platform chart . I actually expected it to bomb."

Agreed. I didn't really expect it to make even the top 10, so I'm pleasantly surprised to see it at No.4 in the all-formats, and 3 by platform.

I myself had a play in the beta and wasn't overly enamoured with it as I found it kind of bland overall. But then, it was all a bit of a clusterfuck anyway when I played due to the lack of any real teamwork (and the fact that most players on my various teams didn't seem to have any microphones/headsets). That said, given enough investment of time I can really see the potential to fall for the game. Unfortunately, I personally don't have that amount of time to invest in MP gaming anymore and therefore won't be buying it. But it warms hy heart when I see a new IP, especially one that is fairly decent, have some success.
• AphoticCosmos #42 2 years ago

ME2 currently occupies my "best game of all time" spot. I expect only ME3 will be able to depose it.

Just fucking stunning, err - aside from scanning ofc.
• The-Bodybuilder #43 2 years ago

I'm with others that ME2 (and 1) has now topped my best game of all time list, beating shenmue (anyone that knows me knows that's not an easy feat)
IMO, it is the spiritual successor to shenmue.
• Kapo! #44 2 years ago

It's impressive that ME2 is doing so well. I downloaded ME1 over the weekend on Steam and am finding it pretty good, but so far I don't think it's as good as Star Wars: KotoR - but only time will tell!
• Vyggo #45 2 years ago

Borderlands still going amazingly strong as well (@17)!
• chrisola #46 2 years ago

always good to see a deserving number one, how many times does that happen. You should be happy! well done to mass effect and honourable mention to MAG reaching number 3 (individual format charts) for an online only game is really surprising.
• man.the.king #48 2 years ago

Haven't played ME2 (or ME1, for that matter), but from what I hear of the game (now that it's out there), this first spot is well-deserved.

My wallet is tight at the moment :( , but will definitely get this when things improve.
