UK Chart: Goal-pie for FIFA 10

Second biggest UK launch ever.

FIFA 10 is the UK's second fastest selling game ever behind Grand Theft Auto IV, smashing FIFA 09's opening weekend by a fearsome 48 per cent.

Xbox 360 and PS3 sales of the football game are nearly neck-and-neck, at 48 per cent and 46 per cent respectively.

Last week's leader Halo 3: ODST drops to three, as DS delight Professor Layton and Pandora's Box holds strong at two. Need for Speed: Shift and Wii Sports Resort round out the top five.

Last Thursday's PSPgo launch has minimal impact, with Gran Turismo PSP at 12 the sole highlight. Other new releases to look for are Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 at 26 and Risen at 29.

Elsewhere, Aion holds the PC top spot but drops off the All-Formats top 40 altogether, and Killzone 2 enjoys budget popularity to rocket back in at 19.

Those keeping tabs on the battle of the bands will see Guitar Hero 5 settling at six while The Beatles: Rock Band fades from 13 to 21.

Congrats are in order. Glad to see that people are appreciating a truly brilliant game. And they've finally achieved their desperate goal of a Metacritic 90+, currently 91 on 360 and 92 on PS3. Just don't do a Konami now you've finally conquered both the press and the public, and keep on improving.
  • uglygamer #2 2 years ago

Not too surprised, especially after how FIFA 2009 built up its userbase over time.
  • Burkey123 #3 2 years ago

    No surprise really.
Also, congrats to Professor Layton. Good stuff.
  • jonthepymm #4 2 years ago

I doubt Gran Turismo PSP is there because of PSP-go. The theme download / voucher provided on registration of a PSP-go registration hasn't come through yet (at least not for me) - and apparently may take a month - so PSP-go owners are almost certainly the only PSP owners NOT to get Gran Tursimo yet!

Therefore I think it's more likely that GT PSP is at 12 due to existing PSP owners.
  • Zomoniac #5 2 years ago

How exactly do you propose one makes a realistic football game that isn't 'generic'?
  • JammyPez #6 2 years ago

Pity about all those bugs in FIFA 10, eh...
  • jaxon58 #7 2 years ago

A strange resurgence of the Lego games!
  • Doctor_What #8 2 years ago

Has Killzone 2 gone Platinum? It's nice, if a little odd, to see that one back in the charts.
  • Bealsy #9 2 years ago

@JammyPez - you mean those game ruining bugs that somehow weren't mentioned in these metacritic bumming 90+ reviews? arf arf
  • the_dudefather #10 2 years ago

    @Zomoniac

    Half time bear attack

You play as a player covered in meat who has to run away from a dozen bears who are let onto the pitch

plays like geometry wars but without any weapons
  • GamerG #11 2 years ago

LOL there is no PSP impact as the games are downloadable!
  • Emth #12 2 years ago

    @Doctor_What

I got the original game (no yucky yellow platinum packaging) for £20 from gamestation a few weeks ago, so it's been reduced for a while.
  • mingster #13 2 years ago

ooo look a psp game how quaint.
  • Fletche #14 2 years ago

So still no Dead Space Extraction then eh, shame, big shame as this (based on comments from some bloke at EA) could be the beginning of the end for the more mature games on the Wii (From EA anyway), is also a shame because it is simply a great game
  • JammyPez #15 2 years ago

@Bealsy yep, the terrible flock of bugs that "professional" reviewers didn't seem to catch, when a 14 year old who appears on a forum using text speak can find it within about an hour of playing. Brilliant.
  • Dave52 #16 2 years ago

Fletche: "could be the beginning of the end for the more mature games on the Wii"

I've always viewed the Wii as a family oriented platform, and an excellent one at that. Anyone who want mature games is gonna go XBox or PS3.

Nice to see a little bounce for KZ2 and LBP, I'm guessing the PS3 Slim and Platinum are a factor...
  • NunianVonFuch #17 2 years ago

@Bealsy Not noticed the strange one when players values are supposed to be 80 as a CM but when played as one it shows up as 73 or so? Then when you swap round the team for a bit and without changing formation shuffle them back to the EXACT SAME POSITION they're suddenly at 80?
That one really grinds my gears.
  • Jay-ITFC #18 2 years ago

"Xbox 360 and PS3 sales of the football game are nearly neck-and-neck, at 48 per cent and 46 per cent respectively."

So presume Wii/DS/PS2/PSP/iPhone/PC make up the other 6%? Thought all of those combined would take a higher percentage of the total than that.

What are these bugs I keep hearing about? Not come across any yet myself although I am neither a professional reviewer or a 14 year old.
  • Fletche #20 2 years ago

Dave52 - "Anyone who want mature games is gonna go XBox or PS3."

Listening to the bleating over the last couple of years from forumites bemoaning the lack of mature games on the Wii, you wouldn't think so

Do the charts include downloaded games?
  • fjharps #22 2 years ago

LOL funny how is the PSPGo suppose to make an impact on PSP game charts when its all downloads lol
  • Hantheman #23 2 years ago

    Loving the Partridge quote.
  • mkreku #24 2 years ago

Why hasn't anyone made a football RPG? Where you level up by doing well at practice and at games. You'd have to work through the system and the end goal would be to reach Premier League. Sort of like a life simulator for a successful footballer!

Would be more fun than killing stuff at least. I'm sick of killing.
  • Fletche #25 2 years ago

@mkreku - They did, years ago, was called Footballer Of The Year
  • Zomoniac #26 2 years ago

Sort of like BAP: Seasons but padded out with boring bits?
  • lennon #27 2 years ago

@Fletche - What an awesome game that was. Hmm wonder if I still have it on my Atari ST..
  • Bealsy #28 2 years ago

@JammyPez - I wonder what EA Sports thought when they saw little 14yr old Jimmy telling the world about how he "skord 15 golz agaynst Barca in 1 harf using fin-esse shot innit"

Translation - Hello there Mr FIFA, one has discovered a rather peculiar error when passing the time with your latest incarnation of the FIFA franchise. When shooting, I have found that simply by pressing the finesse button when shooting - from nearly anywhere on the pitch I might add - the opposition goalkeeper appears to go into some kind of zombie like trance upon where is incapable of saving a shot. Perhaps he is campaigning against Left 4 Dead 2? Your sincerely, Jimmy, 14yrs old.
  • Tetragammatron #29 2 years ago

NGS2 a re-entry? Oh EG, how very droll.
  • swissorc #30 2 years ago

Couldn't agree more Fletche. All you wii owners bitching about no adult orientated games and don't go and buy them when they are released are complete gimps. Just finished dead space and really really enjoyed it (more so than the xbox version which I still quite liked). Now around the corner we have shattered memories which should be really good and muramasa watch them be reviewed well and still flop. People shouldn't hate the wii. They should hate plonkers who buy it and don't buy the software which, in effect is the reason this "generation" such a noob word sorry is turning out worse than gamecube in my opinion.
  • dom6918 #31 2 years ago

Congratulations EA and Rutter great job..these bugs..i cant say they have ruined any of my games! i havent seen one exploit used online..and ive player A LOT! mind you, i also play vs manual players where its near impossible to exploit!
  • collateral89 #32 2 years ago

ive got to say im totally addicted to fifa 10 i usually just play head to head with my friends but with this im loving the manager mode it well deserves the top spot.
  • asphaltcowboy #33 2 years ago

@Doctor_What: KZ2, LBP and the like are getting bundled with the Slim, which would explain their reappearance in the charts...

Haven't played Footballer of the Year but the closest I can remember is the Career mode in ISS 2000 on the humble N64.

I sunk hours into that mode back in the day (and I certainly didn't spend more of my time trying to blag a WAG than break into the national team... ahem).

Not wholly surprised by FIFA's performance though, but I am pleased that a quality game is selling well. Good stuff.
  • curtlikesmeat #35 2 years ago

Just a warning to anyone on the fence about Fifa 10 - it's currently riddled with bugs (which the EG didn't pick up on as no doubt they didn't connect to the Fifa servers).

Live Seasons has currently been taken down, Gameface makes you look like David Dickinson on a bad day if it works at all and Manager Mode has so many bugs it's going to take a long time to sift through them all. Hopefully these will all be patched / addressed (as most of the issues stem from server or database problems according to posts on the EA Fifa forums) but as it stands now it's a bit of a mess.
  • curtlikesmeat #36 2 years ago

P.S. I'd like to see games like this that rely on online features so heavily reviewed after launch Eurogamer. Not your fault that you didn't come across these things in the review but if you played and reviewed Fifa "as it is" now, I think you might consider knocking a point off the score.
  • BM #37 2 years ago

    @mreku

Have you ever played Jumpers for Goalposts 2 online? It's a flash game that sounds exactly like what you're describing, google it and have a go.
  • Tetsuo_Shima #38 2 years ago

I've Fifa 10 on the PS3 and, whilst I haven't seen too many 'bugs', the game does stutter a lot at some parts (replays, mostly, but sometimes during gameplay as well). It even froze dead, once, but I could still quit to XMB. Does anyone else get these crazy skipping/stuttering issues?

I should also add that it's a great game, I didn't notice much difference to Fifa 09 but good fun all the same. Apart from that eternally long splash screen cavalcade. Rooney has scored every time I've switched it on, but I'm hopeful that Lampard will chop him in two one of these days ...

Race for what, exactly? And with whom?

Yeah. Anyone would think this is some sort of competitive market!
  • miiiguel #41 2 years ago

Yeah. Anyone would think this is some sort of competitive market!

I wasn't trying to pull up a joke, what KZ2 is racing against? CoD? Halo? Resistance? Haze (sorry about this one, can't rememeber any other FPS).

    Another year another Fifa /sigh

Final nail in the coffin for the adult gaming hopes on the Wii - no sign of Dead Space : Extraction.
