Ubisoft working on 3D glasses games

Plus CGI films, books, and telly shows.

Yves Guillemot has said Ubisoft will be making 3D (stereoscopic) games as well as CGI films, books and a telly series in the future.

Movie tie-in Avatar will be its first foray into the cardboard-glasses world of 3D, although this will require a specific telly to broadcast the image - apparently these are already on sale in the US.

"The deal is to build a 3D experience on top of the normal experience. Avatar will have both. It's with glasses on a specific TV. I've seen it, it's amazing," Guillemot told GamesIndustry.biz.

"No. It doesn't work on normal TVs. It means we will see an evolution on the TV. They are already in Best Buy in the US. You can already buy these TVs."

The idea after that is to produce games in both 2D and 3D in order to reach as wide an audience as possible.

This ambitious direction ties in with a fresh direction of creating CGI films, a move that will be handled externally at first but gradually move closer to the underbelly of Ubisoft so games can benefit from the art, animation, story and various other assets used for the projects.

Guillemot goes on to outline his goal as reaching a similar level to Peter Jackson's Weta studio, which made headlines for itself after its work on The Lord of the Rings films.

But films are not the only thing Ubisoft is branching out into, with Guillemot confirming that both books and a "small TV series" are already in development.

However, he was reluctant to talk about subject matter, and whether either will be based around the recently acquired Tom Clancy name.

Head over to GamesIndustry.biz for the full Yves Guillemot interview, where he also talks about a foray into the sports market and Beyond Good & Evil 2.

ohh noo ...is it not bad enough that their are fan boys going on about their fav machine but now you could have them going on about their fav machine running on a specific 3d telly.

What advantages do these TVs give apart from 3D? I know it wasn't great, but the Spy Kids 3D DVD was okay.

The 360 elite has a flux capacitor. Seeing thru time is better than 4d

Is this guy for real. Look at how long it took to persuade us to get HDTV. So you prepared to wait 10 years before you release Avatar then? No?

This 3D gimmick is actually gonna kill their game sales as people realise they can't play the game on their current rigs and are not willing to spend 5k on a new 3D tv.

Edit: Before the nitpickers pounce. I mean can't play it as it was intended to be played.

really i've just spent loads on a hdtv and now they want me to get a special 3d tv and wear silly looking specs as well?
  • penhalion #9 4 years ago

As an adendum to my other post. Can anyone find one of these TVs he's talking about? Best buy don't seem to have anything even remotely resembling a 3D TV for sale to end users. Has this guy just been smoking something he shouldn't.

Why would you need a special TV? TV's have been capable of displaying images for use with 3D glasses for years, as clearly evidenced by the Spy Kids 3D movie and the special Doctor Who episode a few years back.

"Philips 3D Solutions brings the 3D viewing experience to you without the need for special 3D glasses. "

The 3D version of the game wont use glasses

That's fantastic news. True 3D display support if done right will be the biggest step forward for gaming since the invention ofhardware 3D acceleration. Anybody who as recently been to an Imax 3D cinema will agree with that.

  • oupe #13 4 years ago

The only drawback being that you need to buy an Imax for your living room.

Philips website: Philips 4YOU 20 Inch 3D Display - WOWvx Technology:
Price: £3,325.00 (GBP) All prices Exclude VAT & Delivery

    A bargain for sure

Instead of making you buy a TV. Why dont they invent glasses with say, some sort of helmet that stores the information to run the games(with the picture transmitted through the glasses). That way you can play it anywhere, and maybe you can interact even more with sensors that realise when you turn your head. Next step wear sensors all over body and play fighting games.
