Ubisoft unveils Settlers 7 for spring

Build in idyllic Renaissance Europe.

Ubisoft and developer Blue Byte have whipped the wrappers off of The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom, which takes places in Renaissance Europe and should be out for PC next spring.

Campaigns have three win conditions - military, science and trade - and fine-tuning a kingdom can go right down to a village by village, sector by sector level, apparently.

Online multiplayer and associated leaderboards lend a competitive edge, and there's a promise of user-generated and downloadable content to follow the game's release.

Blue Byte has created a new graphics engine for Settlers 7 and reworked the AI, too. Head to The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom gallery to see the eye-pleasing changes for yourself.

Alternatively, pop over to Eurogamer TV for the first Settlers 7 video.

The gallery link is fixed. I think it all looks quite pretty and peaceful. I like this sort of game, perfect for a lazy weekend. None of this run and gun bollocks - I can't drink coffee and pick at cakes while doing all that.

I think the first Settlers I played was the last version... wasnt that impressed with it, but perhaps its time to give it another chance. I kinda miss the days of playing games like this style.

You can get Settelrs 2 10th anniversary edition now. It's the best of the series (some will argue the 1st is though). Do it. Amazing relaxing game. The new Anno is very chilled as well.

@Hantheman - beat me to it!

They broke Settlers after the 2nd one in my opinion - and I think they knew that.

If you haven't played Settlers II 10th Anniversary Edition give the demo a spin, it's fucking ACE - hard to find in the shops but well worth a look.

    @Evolution

Settlers 2 was the best that I've played IMO, missed a couple but played the last two and was disappointed.

I'd recommend the latest Anno too, great fun, relaxed although sometimes bad men come and burn down your peaceful settlements. So's I gone has cries! ;(

enjoyed the very first one and played the others intermittently. last was S5 I guess and was not at all impressed.

    Anno 1404 is great though.

Would really like to have this on the consoles, preferably the PS3 with wand support ... :)

you guys said it all. I was a huge settlers 1 fan. the image of the main castle/warehouse must have nearly been burned onto the tv i connected my amiga to... I can still hear that little warning horn noise when you dug up a road and disconnected a building. Was anyone else just happy to spend ages watching the men amble about chopping trees or looking for coal?

S2 was good, and like many I got disinterested after that. the newest Anno really hit all the right spots for me. stone cold classic & best game of the type since S1.

Chalk another vote up for Settlers 2. The 10th Anniversary Edition was a wonderful, wonderful thing - though I still adore the old-school graphics of the DOS version. It was incredibly technically sophisticated for its time, and beautiful to boot. Everything after that... meh.

I'm still wishing for a sequel to Zeus: Master of Olympus. Never got into Caesar or Cleopatra but I spent absolutely yonks on Zeus, working out all the algorithms underpinning the game in order to build the most efficient city...
Still looks pretty now, in an isometric, hand-drawn sprite kind of way.

I'm thinking that this "all new engine" is basically the same engine as Anno 1404 a.k.a. Dawn of Discovery. Something about the camera zoomability - and, well, the grass and trees - looks too similar. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that's a bad thing.

The thing that makes me most nervous about this is the existence of guns. I'm not sure how it will change the feel of the game. Historically, the development of the cannon marked the end of the castle. I like castles :-(

I'll never forget the music of the first game, all those years ago on the Amiga. Sadly my laptop won't run UAE so I can't play it (crap gfx card I think, fecking overheats it), nor will I be able to play this new version.

I'd give anything to see the first game released on Xbox Live Arcade!

The first one was made basically by one person and done in assembler. Looking at all the 1000 and 1000s and 1000s of workers that do their things at the same time... and all that on an amiga 500 was just wow.

Edit: Yes a console port would be great. And actually the way of playing would even work great with a standard controller.
