Ubisoft details Assassin's Creed II DLC News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

17 December, 2009

Ubisoft has detailed the upcoming Assassin's Creed II downloadable content packs it announced just recently.

The first, the Battle of Forli, is due out in January for $3.99 and features six new memories. It focuses on Ezio's work to protect the town of Forli from the invading Orsi family, and fleshes out Caterina Sforza, who you encountered briefly in the main game just before you went off to Florence.

The second pack, the Bonfire of the Vanities, is due out for $4.99 in January, and unlocks a new area of Florence. Ezio has to liberate the city from Savonarola, who has taken it over thanks to an Apple of Eden.

Apparently there's a new move in the latter pack - the spring jump - while video of the first add-on suggests that you get to fly around in Leonardo's whopping bat gizmo again, in between hauling people into hay bales and so forth.

Both add-ons will correspond to the missing "Sequence" numbers in the Assassin's Creed II Animus timeline.

If you haven't played Assassin's Creed II itself yet, you really should. Check out our Assassin's Creed II review to find out why. It's not too late to vote for it in our Eurogamer Readers' Top 50 either.

In the meantime, here's a video of the game's creative director Patrice Desilets explaining how it all works. We want that top.

The prices aren't exactly helpful, firstly they're in USD which means they're likely the US PSN Store prices which obviously won't be converted properly for the UK and also we all know how much MS likes to use round numbers for its mickey-mouse MSP pricing, so translations would be nice.

Not played the main game yet but I've been told that I'm getting it for Christmas so not too long to wait, whether or not I'll bother with this DLC, which looks like it could in fact be levels cut from the main game prior to release, will depend on what I think of the game and whether or not it leaves me wanting more.

US sites talking about 800point DLCs or XBLA games will often just say "ten bucks" so I'm guessing that'll translate to 400 points for the first DLC, maybe 560/600points for the second?

/Hopes

Either way, I *loved* AC2 so I'll be getting these.

I believe we get it sometime in March sadly, but hopefully we will get a directors cut that will include this DLC.

I hope you are right about getting the DLC included, kind of a reward for having to wait so long. I have been tempted to pick it up for the 360 but must resist.
Does anyone know why we PC users are having to wait? Are they adding DX11 support to it or something, like Dirt 2?

The delay might be DX11 but probably piracy. A lot of the devs/pubs actually hold the PC back now to "protect the console sales". Not sure Ubisofts reasoning but that is probably the case with them as well.

Price of this DLC doesn't seem too bad. Depends on the gameplay hours included I guess. I'll probaly get it, but not straight away. I've plenty to be getting on with before I need to expand the experience.

Thanks for that. I just hope they do a good job of bringing it to the PC and not do a half baked job, and while i don't yet have a DX11 card, by impementing it into the game would be great for when i get round to upgrading my current GTX275

Is the price stated in the article really representative of the price we will get over here? Also, are we getting the DLC in January as well or are we likely to have to wait?

Don't worry it will be well worth the wait if AC1: DC is anything to go by, Ubi are pretty good on PC. Probably will need a beast to run it though, anyone know the specs yet?

So people said the game dragged a bit in the middle (it didn't) then complain that this DLC should be part of the game, therefore making it longer. I love the moaners :D.

PC version is out 1st March 2010 according to my Amazon pre-order but that looks like a placeholder date so I wouldn't be surprised if it came much later. Maybe it'll have DX11 enhancements by then which will make the wait worthwhile (as opposed to not worth the extra wait as with DiRT 2)? Hopefully it will include all the console DLC too like THQ did for Red Faction Guerilla; that would make the waiting worthwhile?

I found the first game got dull very quickly but I find myself looking forward to the sequel because of all the praise it has been getting on the consoles.

Kangarootoo: I'm sure I'll be playing the main game for a long time, I certainly got more than enough enjoyment from the first game for it to be worthwhile. However I have found many DLCs for a number of games to be rather underwhelming, hopefully this will prove to be an exception to the usual rules concerning premium DLC.

AC is a divider of peoples, so its good news that you liked the first one, as it means you will love AC2.

Tbh, I wouldn't worry about DLC right now. The main game itself has easily 30+ hours of gameplay if you get into doing all the little optional missions and tasks.

400 each would be an instant DL for me, 800 would be too much...but knowing Microsoft, it will be the latter.

That said, $4 would typically equate to £4, no? Which is about 560 MSP apiece... I can hope.

If the DLC turns out to be a 100k unlocker for stuff already on the disc, like CERTAIN OTHER GAMES I SHALL NOT MENTION, I'll be royally pissed with Ubi.

Otherwise, bring it on!

Is it me or does this not sound like an incredible ripoff? It's fairly cheap and sounds like a decent amount of content. Obviously time will tell but $4 would normally get you a new texture or maybe a few tweaked variables.

Seriously have you even played the game? Ive clocked up over 30 hours playing it. So work that out at a cost per hour... its very cheap, as for the DLC, doesnt sound expensive either. So if you like the game and want to play more, then buy the DLC, if you dont, then its easy... dont. But to complain about a game that contains quite alot of game time is pretty stupid. Its not like the game was 8 hours long like most games.

Anyway, I for one cannot wait to get the DLC to continue my adventures :)

As much as the original sentiment is poorly expressed, I'm glad someone is still questioning slot-in paid-for DLC to fill in the blanks left in the retail game deliberately so content can be sold after release. And anyone who thinks this content wasn't developed alongside the retail release is being naive.

My soldiers? Talking tough? What on earth are you on about?

I suspect that many random things make you laugh, or giggle madly to yourself at the very least.

@ccfb

I don't doubt for a second that this DLC was developed alongside the main release. I just don't give a shit.

As makeamazing points out, there are 30+ in AC2 easily. As games go, its great value.

It doesn't matter what was developed when and by who, all that matters is whether the game you bought was worth the money you paid for it. If you think it was, then everyone is (or should be) happy.

Feeling hard done by after the fact, when you were previously quite happy with your purchase, is simply a childish emotional reaction. It is fantasy, life doesn't work that way.

The only way I personally would feel hard done by is if I bought this DLC. I don't intend to buy this content becasue I feel the content in AC2 is sufficient as it stands.

I was merely saying I'm happy some people still question the policy decisions of these publisher/developers, and continue to realise some content is being withheld at release.

The value judgement is always going to be down to the punter.

Exactly. Exactly. Exactly.

"I was merely saying I'm happy some people still question the policy decisions of these publisher/developers"

I question policy too, by buying or not buying, as you do yourself. As you say, if the DLC is not good value I shan't buy it. My point is that the DLC in no way changes the value of the game I have already bought, just by existing.

I made my value judgement on the day I bought AC2. This apparent bizarre logic that states the value of my purchase is or is not affected, not only by the EXISTENCE of DLC, but also by WHEN said DLC was made, it utterly imaginary to me.

I wasn't saying that. I feel you're arguing with yourself :)

Also, to expand on my value judgement comment, a lot of people will include their perception of when the content was developed as part of that judgement. It seems to me a little unfair to call that childish.

I don't understand why it matters when the code (DLC) was made?! Yes, I've heard that "logic" before, still it doesn't make much sense to me. I could give a few examples of products which are made at the sam time (or before, or whatever, ffs) and that variable does not value or devalue said product, but it's too late, and it's probably worthless.
