TF2 releases first user-made content

Valve "really excited" about future.

Valve's released the first "bunch" of user-made items and weapons for Team Fortress 2 on Steam.

These were submitted to the new Team Fortress 2 Contribution Site, and Valve's excited about the potential this has for the future.

"This is really exciting for us here at Valve," reads a post on the TF2 blog. "This update represents the next step in that process. The line between developers and players is getting very blurry, and we think that's a great thing. "

We can't find a list detailing the new community content, so please let us know if you can.

No you won't be getting any of it on the xbox 360 before you start about the xbox 360 version. In fact I'm going to out on a limb here and say that you will never see any of this extra content on the xbox 360, ever.

Will this ever make it onto XBox Live for free?

In a word, no. C'mon Microsoft!

    @dsmx agreed.

More likely to play this on my Mac when steam appears. Your fault Microsoft.

The line between developers and players first blurred when Valve took on the player-made mod called Team Fortress. Turn that wheel!

All the new content can be found by looking in Robin Walker's backpack here:

The new stuff starts on the second page. There's a new hat for each class, plus two new melee weapons and some chocolate. I know that the Heavy gets the Elvis haircut, but beyond that I've no idea which items correspond to which class. You'll have to use your imagination, or play the game. Do whichever comes easier to you.

"Sorry, but we had a thriving user generated mod community LONG before Valve showed up. I hate that this generation seem to want to claim everything as new & exciting, when it's just re-hash of what we had before, only now it costs more & is less accessible"

    Er...

Whilst Valve actually caring about what people want in their TF2 might just be a posture, it's fair to say they've done far more than most to make that posture lifelike. In fact, one could say, they actually do care, since them caring is so similar to them-not--really-caring-but-pretending-they-do as to make no difference.

I'd love to see your custom Stunt Island levels, I really would.

They haven't claimed anything of the sort. What they're talking about is the community submitting content that becomes part of the official game and that's rare enough. They've also been adding community maps to the game for the last few updates (and some of them are excellent).

Yes there was a mod community before but Valve have done more for that community than any other developer I can think of; just look at the numbers of mods made using Half-Life and Source since 1998.

And here's a post that shows the hats being worn by the classes:

Whuh? The weapons actually have new attributes? I was under the impression that this stuff would be purely cosmetic, like the hats.

Edit: also, the Pyro's brain slug is made of solid gold win, and I want one immediately.

Very glad to hear this, Valve are, and always have been about the players.
However this step in intergrated player generated content had already been taken by Little Big Planet, and assuming valve has given as much room for creativity as Media Molecule have to their players then truly, prepare to be amazed!
