System 3 unveils SuperCar Challenge News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

16 December, 2008

System 3 has announced that it will follow up this year's Ferrari Challenge with SuperCar Challenge, another PS3-exclusive racer, in the spring.

Developed once again by Eutechnyx, SuperCar Challenge expands the vehicular line-up to include the Aston Martin DB9, Lamborghini Murcielago RGT, McLaren F1 and Ferrari FXX among its more than 40 cars.

It also promises over 20 tracks including Silverstone, Spa, Nurburgring and Mugello Italy, with several game modes to explore, including 16-player online or LAN races.

As with Ferrari Challenge, handling will be buffed up for simulation fans who want a fierce challenge, but there will also be simpler arcade options for beginners, lots of driving assists and dynamically changing career-mode AI, with the aim being to "graduate players" from novice to expert.

Once they get there, they can take on the new "Legendary" AI setting, and might be able to download extra cars to drag things out.

All the while, System 3 notes with exclamation, there's voiceover and commentary from Tiff Needell. There's no sign of him in the screenshots, of course, but you can admire those anyway in our SuperCar Challenge gallery.

Damnit! I was thinking this was an evolution of "Supercars" for the Amiga. :'(

Hmm, dunno Ferrari was...OK...just I found it REALLY boring for some reason and just couldn't be arsed to actually play it for any length of time. Strange as I normally like the more realistic racers.

Still not bad. Release a demo System 3 and you might pry a sale if enough improvements are made. No demo no sale this time though.

Ferrari Challenge was so punishingly difficult it was about as much fun as being repeatedly slapped in the face with a large, slighty smelly kipper.

And I thought System 3 had promised a long stream of dlc on a monthly basis in support of Ferrari - extra tracks, cars, etc?

There hasn't been any has there?

Does not bode well for Supercar.

Ferrari Challenge was boring because the AI was bad, but the handling and tracks were great.

One of the screenshots shows theboth right wheels off the floor on a straight part of track. Noth the best screen to publish! I hope they tidy up the basics before release.

Agree with all the comments re. Challenge's downloadable content: where the fuck is it!

I actually like Ferrari Challenge, so am looking forward to this. Sure, the AI was a bit dodgy and the damage model was rubbish, but the driving model was excellent, the track list brilliant (any game with Spa in it gets my approval!) and I liked the idea that you compete in a championship, rather than doing random races etc (not that the more traditional GT structure is bad, I just like the realism of being able to compete in a proper championship).

I also notice that the Buggatti Veyron is available in SuperCar Challenge! Awesome! :D

There is always a line between how real and how fun, thinking back to GRID, not very realistic but great fun but one thing which always got me with that was the classic line "you've damaged you raidiator" Yet I could continue redlining the car, even stop with my handbrake and keep the revs maxed and it still wouldn't overheat and blow a gasket.

uh oh... think they better keep this 1 in development until its actually done. fc was not and perhaps never will be complete. this will be a rent before buy this time... lost out on fc and theres a lot of trust that needs regaining
