Super Paper Mario gets US date

April Wii launch now confirmed.

Super Paper Mario will be released for Nintendo Wii on 9th April in the States, Nintendo told its American buddies this afternoon, confirming an earlier report in Nintendo Power to the effect that it would be out that month.

Developed by Intelligent Systems, Super Paper Mario had originally been lined up for the GameCube, but with that console's demise hastened by Wii excitement the game shifted to the newer format, where its platform and role-playing hybrid style will have a chance to find a wide early audience.

Like the N64 and GameCube Paper Mario games (and, to some extent, Alphadream's Mario & Luigi series) before it, Super Paper Mario will consist of side-scrolling platform-style gameplay, directed by holding the Wiimote sideways and using it like a regular game controller, but interestingly it will allow players to switch to three dimensions to aid exploration. Players will also collect Pixls, which add game functionality that draws upon Wiimote capabilities.

If that sounds a bit vague, it's because there simply isn't a huge amount known of the game. The good news is that, given the unquestionable pedigree of past Paper Mario games, it's probably a bit of a dead cert. Expect to see it ripped lovingly to pieces pretty soon after the 9th.

I found Paper Mario to be a bit meh as far as RPGs go. Very repetitive, and very bland once you get past the neato graphics.

Upping the amount of platforming should make it even worse. Hurrah!

Ah, nice. Fingers crossed for a timely Euro conversion.

Bah - too many games, too little money too little time :(.

Hence why I'm, trying to stick to one console for as long as possible.

I owned every alive console at one stage in 2005 and it was a bitch juggling time and money to get entertainment from them all. :(

@Blerk: I think it's a non RPG players RPG. (Hence my love for it)
Wholeheartedly agrees with that the platforming should make it worse.

heh - tell me about it. I have like 20 games left to finish on xbox, ps, cube, psp and ds - no I'm not rich they were all cheap for like 10 or 15 quid second hand or in sales.

I haven't even started on teh next gen yet :(.

I very much enjoyed Paper Mario on the Cube, so I'm definitely looking forward to this. Let's hope the Euro release date isn't too far behind the US one...

Doesn't Super Paper Mario ditch (almost?) all of the RPG elements from the previous GameCube offering anyway? Which makes it a stylised platformer and thus good, rather than a further diluted RPG (and one which I loved, I should add).

Look see... this is what happens when you own more than one console, now I'm hearing how awesome Paper Mario is and seeing how I've still kept hold of my gamecube, I'm probably going to go down and hunt for this game, while simultaneously trying to not buy Okami which amazes me that I've lasted 3 days without plonking down the cash.

    I have no will power.

wish i'd imported an American Wii. I can't see any benefit of owning a UK one when the games are released months later and Ebay could supply me with US wii games...

    ba humbug.

I agree with Blerk. I was bored after 8 hours and traded Paper Mario 2 in.

Erm, but if you had the ability to READ anything, you'd know that this game is a platformer and nothing like the "rpg-lite" paper mario 2 (apart from the graphical style).

    Late summer for Europe?

Very excited by this. Loved the style and humour of Paper Mario but never really got with the game dynamics, this is much more up my street by the sound of it.

    Can't bloody wait!

    /is European

    Looks like I'll have too!

Thanks for this bit of info EUROgamer. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't know when each and every game will be released in the US. What would I do?!?!?!

I';ve interpreted this game through rigorous wikipedia research as the original super mario on the NES but with the option of taking the side on world and viewing it differently. Seems that way from the screenshots and looks like an exciting idea. No longer will we wonder why mario didn't just walk around the gomba's

Why all the Paper Mario hate? It was a excellent RPG with humour. Made me laugh out loud a number of times.
