Skateboard-controlled Hawk revealed News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Oli Welsh

4 December, 2008

Activision has confirmed a sequel-heavy lineup for 2009, including new Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk games, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and racing and James Bond games by Bizarre Creations.

The news came from an advertising conference hosted by in-game ads company Massive Inc, and was reported by MTV and Newsweek journalist N'Gai Croal's twitter.

Details were scant, as none of the games have been officially announced yet, and the conference was aimed at advertisers. There were no great surprises, but one or two interesting new directions.

Venerable skateboarding series Tony Hawk is going the way of the bespoke peripheral. "You're not going to be playing this game with a controller in your hands," said the Activision executive speaking at the conference.

We assume he means a skateboard controller of some kind. Seems like Hawk developer Neversoft has caught the bug from its work on Guitar Hero. The game will be released for 360, PS3, Wii and DS in October next year.

No-one will be shocked to learn that the next Call of Duty is returning to contemporary themes as we go back into an Infinity Ward year. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, sequel to last year's series high-point, was confirmed for an autumn 2009 release at the conference.

Project Gotham Racing developer Bizarre Creations, which Activision acquired last year, has been put to work on the James Bond licence. The studio is creating a "racing and driving focused" third-person Bond adventure, not tied in to any film, due in September next year.

Bizarre also working on an original racing game which was described at the conference as "Mario Kart meets Forza".

The next Guitar Hero was described simply as "Guitar Hero 5", and discussed as a very suitable franchise for in-game advertising. A mocked-up screen with a Burger King ad was shown.

No mention was made of the company's Blizzard releases, but this shouldn't be surprising - the fantasy and science-fiction themes of StarCraft II, World of Warcraft and Diablo III make them unsuitable vehicles for advertising.

I don't know about this. Probably just gonna jack Nintendo's idea for the style of controller.

And "modern warfare" hasn't been done to death either? behave son, there are probably just as many games set in the present / slight future as there are set in WWII.

Also, Guitar Hero 5?? I think they are starting to take the piss a bit now with that. 5 games in three years (or is it only two years?).

Skateboard controller would be lame.

Skateboarding is HARD, using a skateboard controller will never feel satisfying or authentic.
SKATE is probably the closest you can get to the feeling of doing tricks on a skateboard.
Certainly tricks in skate make a lot of sense to all skaters i've ever met but a skateboard controller would be bad, very, very bad.

"Bizarre also working on an original racing game which was described at the conference as "Mario Kart meets Forza". Interesting!

And this basically shows Activision cares entirely about money rather than quality.

Yes but a full scale proper game will be crap. Definitely won't appeal to the core audience of people who actually skate.

Then again the Tony Hawk series hasn't for years anyway so meh.

"Mario Kart meets Forza"

Hang on a sec... Fairly realistic handling cars apart from exagerated drift mechanics... haven't they already done that with project gotham racing?

Or do they mean they are just making a cartoony PGR?

Never got round to playing that, but liked the cel-shaded look. Was it any good?

maybe it'll be modern warfare mumbai: you receive some intel, hang about for a bit, wait for the worst, then refuse any international help and take 3 days to diffuse the situation....

Guitar Hero 5! - I think it's getting a bit worn out now.. they need to do something new..

Modern Warfare 2 is good (hated the sci-fi idea imo) - I agree with Santino though.

I noticed that Tony Hawks needed to rethink their games after Skate showed them up. Dunno about the Skateboard controller though.

Hmmm.. Sounds pretty good, but since I can't even stand on a skateboard without falling off this should provide endless fun for drunken nights in..

Maybe the skateboard controller is going to be like that in obscure PS2 Jet Set Radio ripoff Yanya Caballista, in which a tiny plastic board clipped to your pad's analogue sticks and you twiddled it to control your skater.
