Red Dead holds off Mario Galaxy 2

Rockstar continues flogging Dead horses.

Red Dead Redemption maintained its horseshoe-like grip on the top of the UK charts this week despite the launch of Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Wii on Friday.

Nintendo's evergreen plumber came in at number two, displacing 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa despite the tournament finally beginning. World Cup's at three.

Rooms: The Main Building pushed up to fourth, but the only other new entry in the All-Formats Top 40 was Green Day: Rock Band in 14th.

There were re-entries though for Uncharted 2, which swung up to 16 thanks to a PS3 Platinum launch, and Dante's Inferno, which came in at 30.

The top 10 had a familiar feel to it though, with Just Dance at five, Wii Fit Plus six, Modern Warfare 2 seven, The Sims 3: Ambitions eight, UFC Undisputed 2010 at nine and Wii Sports Resort in 10.

Despite a fairly weak start, Blur held on at 11 in the battle of the arcade racers, while ModNation Racers clung on in 15th and Split/Second: Velocity sank slightly to 19th.

    Good to see RDR doing well, especially ahead of Mario. I personally thought Galaxy was a bit rubbish along with almost every other Mario game except Sunshine.
  • Bealsy #2 2 years ago

    dead, skinned horses in my game.
  • Haloboy #3 2 years ago

    Mario rubbish? What galaxy are you from?
  • Pac #4 2 years ago

    @Eraysor

    We are all entitled to our opinions good sir. Yours is just wrong.

    RDR and MG2 are both fantastic. Its good to have 2 very different games to play at the same time.
  • evilashchris #5 2 years ago

    I'd like to see Mario skin a Yoshi.

    "Ugh! You-a stink!"
  • Vice.Destroyer #6 2 years ago

    Eraysor must be wanting to have his name etched in infamy today. I'm just not bothered enough to respond. Can't even be arsed to neg him. Sunshine the best Mario game out of them all? Unbelievable

    Wouldn't have expected to see RDR still in front of SMG2 since it has already been out for a few weeks.

    Edit: Too bad No More Heroes 2 is nowhere to be seen. I think it's fantastic and in some aspects even better than the first one. Didn't do much else yesterday because it's really good.

    Is this a joke because I lol'd.

    Interesting, RDR just goes to show the power and influence of having a friends list full of RDR players. A good game for sure, really looking forward to the Co-op pack, MP has gotten a little stale now.

    SMG2 is just awesome, I couldn't have asked for a better follow up the the first galaxy.

    @PAC
    Two different games??

    Where you ride around landscapes, on a creature, killing things for money/coins.
    Including shooting them with bullets/ starbits.
    ;)

    I still know of people trying to get hold of RDR, or holding off getting it until they've finished other games before timesinking into it. It's still got a massive sales life in it, especially through word of mouth sales for the more casual gamer who aren't aware of it.

    @Tom Bramwell
    Don't I remember a promis last week that the puns would stop if RDR remained on top for another week? ;-)
  • Eraysor #11 2 years ago

    Seriously guys, I'm not even trying to get negged on purpose or anything. That's literally my opinion...I traded the original in to get Rock Band if I recall correctly.
  • Goodfella #12 2 years ago

    @Eraysor

    I'm probably one of the few to agree with you. I used to love Mario games but Galaxy didn't do it for me so I traded it in before completing it.

    That's not to say it's a bad game, far from it, just not my cup of tea any more.
  • GamesConnoisseur #13 2 years ago

    Sunshine is not the best of the Mario 3D platforming, most would rank it lower!

    Rockstar managing to see off the best Nintendo has to offer, that not something Nintendo would find heartening.
  • CallousB #14 2 years ago

    Mario Galaxy 2 was number one by format. Still..I'm surprised it didn't beat the Red Dead sales combined.

  • Lebowski #15 2 years ago

    Well done RDR, an awesome game that deserves all its success.
  • Tomo #16 2 years ago

    Thought SMG2 would pip RDR this week. Reckon it'll have pretty good legs though.
  • gingerlink #17 2 years ago

    Remember that Super Mario Galaxy 2 didn't even get a full week of sales.
  • Mkwone #18 2 years ago

    Why is FIFA 10 in twice?
  • lavalant #19 2 years ago

    RDR is multiplatform where as Mario Galaxy has the disadvantage of being on that plastic toy, shame really, it's like serving fine wine in a McDonalds cup.
  • Beano #20 2 years ago

    I love RDR but SMG2 is just incredible fun - best game of the year so far.

    Calling SMG "rubbish" is just sad.
  • Beano #21 2 years ago

    "RDR is multiplatform where as Mario Galaxy has the disadvantage of being on that plastic toy, shame really, it's like serving fine wine in a McDonalds cup."

    So true - and most Wii owners are casual gamers which do not rush out to buy the game on launch day. SMG2 will instead keep selling for many months.
  • bad09 #22 2 years ago

    I'll just balance the hate towards Eraysor by saying I to found Galaxy totally rubbish....although thinking almost every Mario game other than sunshine is rubbish he IS clearly insane.
  • LazyDan #23 2 years ago

    MG2 was released on Friday, the cut-off for this week's charts was close of play Saturday. It had two full days out on one format against RDR's full week on two platforms.

    I'm not getting involved in the 'which game is better' argument - they're both good, but give it 'till next week before declaring Mario is doomed.

    EDIT: Incidentally, I was at the launch event for MG2 on Thursday night - there was most certainly demand.

    I doubt it'll be number one next week. But yeeeehaw for the effort, I was darn tootin' sure it'd be displaced in the couple of days of sales that MG2 had.
  • cerebralbored #25 2 years ago

    @LazyDan

    How many things did you get Charles Martinet to sign when you went the Galaxy 2 launch event? I took my brother there, and he got the game sleeve (and a certificate from the goodie bag) signed.
  • sneetch #26 2 years ago

    Bought SMG2 on Friday, loving it as much as SMG and Sunshine (I don't understand why that game is so disliked, although the camera is really not your friend some times).

    I'm just glad they took the SMG2 ad off Eurogamer, for some reason it made the browser really chug badly on my PC.
  • smelly #27 2 years ago

    so uk gamers prefer a collection of easy mini games - who knew?

    Rather than an easy large game? i guess...
  • smelly #29 2 years ago

    >Rather than an easy large game?

    What game would that be?

    RDR disappointed me, ignore the needlessly long cutscenes, and the needlessly long travelling (yes i know about campfires, but you cant use them in a mission) - You're left with a series of mini games which wouldnt look out of place on the wii. And apart from ONE mission - the one where you had to shoot the crows from the food - no challenge at all!

    And even that wasnt a challenge once i bought a better weapon (the first time in the whole game i actually bought something)

    @cerebralbored - I only got the collectors edition strategy guide signed :( As we got to him the GAME staff started saying only one item can be signed, and I didn't want to be cheeky. I was lucky to get that though, apparently there were only 10 or so of those CE strategy guides.

    @Milky1985 - They were chucking plushies around!? My friend and I weren't dressed as Mario so we got skipped over for the goody bags... The only free thing I got was a Mario mask handed out by The Sun. Got a picture with the Mario and Luigi costume guys as well, except my friend pushed in and got next to Mario - I soon corrected that. I felt like a dick but it was worth it!
