PSP video service launches in the UK

Sky and Sony unleash Go!View.

Sony and Sky have launched the Go!View video service for PSP in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

This lets you download telly from the Go!View website onto your PC and transfer it across to your PSP. So far Disney, ABC, ESPN, the BBC, Sony Pictures, NBC, National Geographic and Sky Sports are offering their content.

That means you will be able to look at cars in Top Gear or women in Desperate Housewives or aliens in Dr. Who or ogres in Premier League football.

There are three monthly subscription packs available for GBP 5 (EUR 7) each: comedy, sport, and entertainment. You can bundle two together for GBP 8 (EUR 11), or all three for GBP 10 (EUR 17). Plus the trio can be trialled free for a month.

Select films and telly programs can be rented from GBP 1.50 (EUR 2) an episode, or GBP 2.50 (EUR 3.20) for a film.

Sony also promises that Go!View will continue to expand over time.

How does all that, work then - and from when? I don't visit the PC-PSP Store too often, but I can't see anything of this, under video content.

I don't think I'll bother, to be honest.
  • leedsunited92 #3 4 years ago

So how can we get it? The Go! site says it hasn't launched yet

Bring it over to PS3 - HD Torchwood from the BBC Would be excellent - and there is no way im stumping up 40 quid for the blu ray versions. and HD Top Gear as well. Thanks.

Agreed, bring it to the PS3 in HD and I'm interested. Never bothered with the media stuff on my PSP.
  • imamazed #7 4 years ago

People just don't want to pay for this kind of thing just to watch it on their PSP.

Thanks, hierophant. Doesn't look all that appealing, tbh. If it were constantly streaming new content, and regularly updating, maybe. But this is like a borked highlights package. They have some things in the middle of their run, and others just random. None of the sports stuff looks interesting, either, and there are no animations to speak of. Movies is probably the best part of it, except they're all ppv, and a bit old.

I have the ability to record TV and FFMPEG installed on my machine - why do I need this again?
  • the_dudefather #10 4 years ago

    @JohnnyWashnGo
I have a car, why would I need to take a bus? ;)
  • ZuluHero #11 4 years ago

    @the_dudefather

    Nicely put :)

EDIT: I've not really used my PsP online much, I only have a measly 32mb card which seems to fill up uber quick thanks to page caching, im lucky if i load one page. But does anyone know if TV services like iPlayer work through the PsPs browser?

If i could watch Toronto Raptors games on ESPN via my PSP I'd buy it... but I expect the region locking will put a stop to anything like that.

The first series of RTD Doctor Who or The Mighty Boosh are not exactly what I'd call "Latest TV". More like "stuff that was released on UMD and easy to convert, but we still want to get money from".
  • Machetazo #14 4 years ago

That's the impression I was left with, too. A bit underwhelming, far more so, when they're charging a subscription for it, in blocks.

Because you enjoy the smell of urine and vomit?

My point is that I have paid for my TV license, I don't see why I should pay again to watch BBC shows on the really small screen. Surely in this day and age, with the Beeb showing shows for a week on iPlayer, they should also be letting us format shift the content from iPlayer to MP4?

This video service seems like the most pointless waste of time. They offer nothing that a reasonable smart person couldn't do themselves.

I was going to try to put a positive spin on this, as I'm all for choice, but then I read "powered by Sky", which should read "Powered by PURE EVIL!!!". I heavily dislike Sky, although if it was a store instead of rentals I'd probably go for it, but I'll pass.

Do you need the Firmware for this? Seems like it's likely whatever deals with rental time would need updated.

Sounds like a load of pissing around to me.

Now, if the PSP automatically synched with my Sky Planner I might be interested.

BBC iPlayer on PS3,will be all you need (once the proper version is released rather than the hack'd version). Free as it should be.

Sky Player takes the friggin' piss. You have to have a paid subscrption to access it then they charge you per episode on top!? W_T_F_!?

Haven't checked out C4's re-released digital download service that replaced 4OD. Dunno if they charge.

Does anyone know if this will work on a Jap PSP? Or do you have to have a UK model?
  • dr_faulk #20 4 years ago

I checked it all out... hmmm. I'd rather rent the DVD, or buy the box sets.

You might need the bus if you want to get drunk somewhere or can't park easily.

The bus has plus points over a car.

Does this have plus points over the many PSP encoders and either a TV Card or Torrent program?

It might be slightly easier and slightly less illegal (depending on what you're doing), but personally I find recording shows from my TV card or downloading them from UKNova and putting them on PSP works just fine....and it's free.
  • phatb0y #22 4 years ago

But seriously for a second, who is this aimed at? And why?

The more technically savvy already rip stuff to their PSP and know its a con.

The less technically minded would never dream of watching video on their PSP.

    Subscription?

    Bugger off.

    /Leaches from iPlayer
  • code601 #24 4 years ago

1 month trial for signing up, but defiantly not enough content to justify paying for it currently.

The web site wont even remember my card details anyway, maybe its just a bug.
  • spookyzombie #25 4 years ago

    Is anything free on here?
  • Danj #26 4 years ago

I thought this was going to be free for those who have a Sky subscription, like Sky Anytime?
  • m0thr4 #27 4 years ago

Thanks, but I think I'll stick with my iPhone 3G, which at least fits in my pocket.
