PS3 outsells Xbox 360 in Q2 worldwide

Sony sales data vs. MS investor relations.

A comparison of Sony's corporate unit sales data and comments made by an investor relations spokesperson for Microsoft suggest that PlayStation 3 outsold Xbox 360 worldwide for the three months ending 30th September.

The PS3 shifted 2.43 million consoles throughout the period, according to freshly-published Q2 FY 2008 figures - nearly double that for the same stretch last year.

This puts Sony ahead of Microsoft, which recently told AFP the 360 shifted 2.2 million units for the same period.

We're not entirely sure where all the PS3 sales have come from. The Xbox 360, after all, experienced a price cut in early September, prompting all sorts of sales-boasts from the platform holder, particularly in the US, and it's well known that the Microsoft console has been doing well in Japan and in the UK for a while.

Whatever the reason, this promising pre-Christmas surge puts the PS3 at a worldwide total of 16.84 million units. The Xbox 360, if you remember, stands at around 24 million, although Microsoft hasn't posted exact figures. Nintendo has sold 5 billion squillion Wiis.

Sony's games division also cut losses from JPY 96.7 billion (GBP 624 million) to JPY 39.5 billion (GBP 255 million) for the three-month period. Perhaps it found some more blind Venetian monks to carve blue diodes out of the irises of virgin panthers.

PSP sales rose slightly to 3.18 million units to help achieve this, while the PS2 dipped to 2.5 million units - further pushing PS3 finally to the forefront of the Sony operation.

    Outside the US and UK the X360 is not the most massive of sellers. So it makes sense. Unfortunately the internet (THE ENTIRE INTERNET!) is so US/English-centric that the 360 "good message" overwhelms the rest of the world. I think this is showing in the demographics that MS are reaching out to with the NXE and so-called casual titles like Lips and SceneIt!.

    Still, as long as there's enough sales to keep PS3 games on the shelves (unlike the later lie of the 'Cube), I'm happy.

    Sony numbers are for machines shipped to retail
    MS numbers are for machines actually sold at retail

    Nobody cares how Nintendo count theirs anymore!

    People seem to forget/ignore that before the 360's last price drop, the PS3 had sold more units in a shorter space of time in it's life than the 360 did.

    In 22 months (end of Sept 2007), the 360 had shipped 13.7 million units.
    In 19 months (end of June 2008), the PS3 had sold 14.4 million units.

    Obviously not all PS3's were purchased primarily as a games console but I don't know anyone who would ever purchase the 360 for its media capabilities either.

    So the PS3 is "catching up" at the rate of 0.92 million a year and is over 7 million behind?

    Plus retail seem to indicate the 360 is doing rather well since the last price cut - heck the 360 has even been outselling the PS3 and the PS2 (separately not together) in Japan!

    7.1 divided by 0.92 million = 7.71 years for the PS3 to catch the 360.

    So, the PS3 should catch up with the 360 in the year 2016 - May 19th would de my guess lol

    Come on Sony get the PS 4 out pronto and lets put this blip behind us please.

    24 mio sold Xbox360 is not right, they currently sold about 21.7 mio units. Microsoft is likely to be ahead with 5-6 mio consoles sold. The good Sony numbers result from a stronger demand in the rest of europe. UK is not the most important gaming market in europe, other european countries also have strong importance.

    The real news for this Gen sales is that Nintendo has pulled the old DS trick on the home console market - making it twice in a row.

    Release an underpowered system (always sold at a profit) with an appealing easy to use input mechanism - not sure the third time will be the charm - only time will tell.

    Still gutted that Johnny Chung Lee's Head-tracking was dropped as an Easter egg from Bloom Blocks - as it certainly seems a step in the direction I would like the future to take - even if only as an option.

    When you see high profile games like GTA and Fallout being reported to run better on a console that cost half the price of the other is it any wonder the 360 is winning.

    Microsoft was playing chicken with Sony over who was prepared to lose the most money to win this generation and I think Sony just swerved off the road.

    As I've said elsewhere, I do prefer the PS3 as a machine, but if I owned neither and was looking to buy a console the price of the mid-range 360 packs would be very attractive.

    I think the PS3 is doing well on word of mouth (the advertising couldn't be much worse if Sony tried). My flatmate used to own a 360 but had to get rid of it. He's now thinking of getting a console and, after playing on my ones extensively (beer and late nights may have been involved) he says he'd prefer to get a PS3... But will he? The price difference just can't be ignored, and there are more tasty exclusives on the 360 at the moment than the PS3.

    It looks likely that MS will extend their lead this Christmas, but I don't think Sony will do nearly as badly as most of America and the UK seem to believe.

    Sony USED to quote sales SHIPPED to warehouses, they now quote sales to retail.

    So they are the same....

    The truth is no one buys the 360 for it's media capabilities. It's sold as and seen as a pure gaming system. The PS3 is the best choice as a blu-ray player as the firmware is fully updatable unlike a lot of blu-ray players on the market. As more and more people buy HDTV's more people are going to want to get the full benefit of the upgrade and more PS3's will be sold.
    I love my PS3 and 360, but it has to be said that the 360's line-up of exclusives is marginally superior to the PS3's and with multiformat games the majority will play and look better on the 360 which is a shame as I really love the PS3 as a system.

    Anyway, PS3's sales cannot be attributed down to sales as a games machine alone.

    Is this surprising to anyone? Up until a month ago, the PS3 was beating the 360 in every territory.

    I suspect next quarter will yield different results.

    FACT is, the Ps3 outsold the 360 in the last quarter by 500k.
    FACT is, the PS3 will outsell the 360 in the next quarter as the single month the 360 has been ahead saw barely 100k difference worldwide between them, and the Ps3 has LBP to keep it going whereas the 360 merely has Gears 2 which appeals to the demographic that already have the XBOX 360.
    FACT is the 360 sold fewer this year than it did last year, showing it has a slowdown.
    FACT is Fable 2 is not a 10/10 game by anyones yardsitck except the extremely biaseded Euro360gamer.

    No wonder all the 360tards hang out here.

    The numbers whilst people can get het up about it, the fact is they DO changes over a period of time. With the present numbers PS3 is ahead by only a margin and will TAKE a while to catch up and 'beat' X360.

    Nintendo is the winner this gen, but the biggest loser so far is Sony as they did not retake quickly their market share and pressures from shares and credit crunch mean Sony may be less willing to 'speed' up the reconquest of their previous dominance.

    Consumers are the winners if not one company have the monopoly.

    FACT most of Hedbogs facts are bullshit.

    FACT PS3 is no longer the best choice as a Blu-Ray player if thats all you want, there are better cheaper players out there now so these type of buyers are likely to drop off this coming year... not to mention something people always overlook... power consumption(PS3 has always been the most power consuming console by far and would not look good compared to a stand alone player).

    FACT these figures dont take into account the sales surge post price cut/ add campaign which looks to only keep rising. I really do think MS have a chance of pulling even further ahead of Sony this Christmas I can see far more people opting for the 360, alot of fence sitters have still not been convinced by the PS3 it just hasnt had that 'must have' feel about it that it would need(being the bulkier more expensive console) and I doubt it will now.

    FACT Sony fanboys speculate that the rest of Europe loves PS3 and Sony; without actually knowing this is still the case(the sales figures dont support these claims) or whether they too will start to favour 360 greatly(I say if they havent already... they will, they are always last to catch on but they usually do in the end).

    FACT LBP isnt all it was cracked up to be and it never was going to be a system seller to casuals.

    FACT its likely Sony are already bleeding more money than MS at these prices... so I wouldnt expect a price cut, they would have done it already if they could. It would be laughable to hear someone try and and bring up the excuse that they dont think they need to, thats just delusional they are increasingly looking like they will finnish 3rd the longer they stay there and they havent been selling nearly enough to get in second place any time soon(and thats talking years... or even before this generation closes).

    Has anyone been following the Japanese hardware sales? 360 has beat the PS3 for the 7th straight week in a row according to Famitsu...do you remember some individuals stating "it will be back to normal next week" the very week it was first reported? ;)

    I find that quite suprising personally I think the xbox 360 will kill the ps3 in the next few months if you compare the number of good games coming out on each console. However I may still might get a ps3 for blueray and to have something to play when my xbox 360 breaks again ( at the moment im still waiting for it to be repaired) and perhaps people are buying it more for the bluray player.

    Oh and i forgot to say the main point why i think the xbox 360 will kill the ps3 gameswise is the price. If you are a parent are you going to spend £200+ for a glorified bluray player when your kids might not even have a hdtv or spend £130 on an xbox 360 arcade or alternatively a wii if your that way inclined

    as for the hardcoregamingmarket ,the consolewar now turns towards 360 , sales figures , game exclusives and widespread forum experience proved. (even in europe)
    the casual ...hence mass consumer market war is already won by Nintendo. (ms and sony tend to forget that)
    What's left for Sony ?
    Blu ray ?The fact they can prove they have the better console?
    Last year i thought they were going to be stronger in exclusives ...'squashing 360 " but i'm wrong and still unconvinced. Now even for2009 i put my money on 360.
    This year only : LBpl , MGS4 and resistance 2 for me.
    What generally is not accepted by sony fans "once the dominator" that now they are losing day by day, due to:
    1/lost one year over 360...[result ps3 higher price]
    2/carrying the ps2 as a burden ...a very heavy one !!
    3/focus on bluray , "now only recovering."

    .... these are all elements that may seem "not to important" for large part of sonyfanbase but super important for sony as a the company.
    You can add aslo
    4/Not Sony but MS that is currently dominating and winning the promotion on exclusive games/console
    This is now paid cash.

    the "undecided" are becoming more and more decided. Aslo where the market is growing strong = handheld ,not console.

    However the PS2 is still outselling the 360 in Japan...that surely shows they want Sony machine just not at the price. The PS2 is making Soney money so its a burden the surely dont mind having.

    MS are trying desperately to entice the PS2 only oners(they prob have a wii) over to the machinr and NXE proves it..its not really working..obviously xmas may show otherwise. MS have pigeoned holed themselves to a demographic that is halting the really making the PS3 pay for the high price.

    LBP will sell systems depiste what xbots say and Gears may sell 360s just nowhere near as much as before. Sure evryone including myself expected the PS3 to sell more than the PS2 did at this stage but its selling exactly the same at a stupidly high price compared to the other 2 machines. Surely Sony may not be overjoyed but are content knowing the PSP and PS2 are making money? Or will MS be disappointed that despite a cheap price and more game sthat sales are less than last year?

    2009 will be fun and Sony have a big hitter right at the start with Killzone 2!! MS wil obviously have games all of next year but PS3 is making money for devs now...and you can see certain devs supporting the PS3 a bit more than the 360.

    MS will get Tekken and Final Fantasy which is a loss for Sony but the one country sony wanted Final Fantsy exclusive they have it..that game alone could sell 1million+ unites thats after the the Advent Child blu ray demo bundle.

    2009 will be fun for gamers.

    Erm, if anything I can see devs supporting the Wii rather than the PS3 or 360.

    Also bear in mind this is the first two quarters (Apr-Sep)

    The all important 3rd quarter is where it matters (Oct-Dec).

    Thats when most of the good games come out and Christmas presents are bought.

    And if you are struggling to afford a new console this year while not buy it with an Argos card at 222% interest! :(

    as its not listed in the sound options ive got a 7.1 amp and im aware it will only be on blu ray.

    I bought a PS3 because i wanted all the stuff in the box and despite what fanboys think its a bloody great games machine. I am getting a 360 on Friday anyway but the PS3 is my console of choice and always will be.

    The devs supporting the PS3 more and more is basically devs realising to maximise profits yo have to make the games equal so PS3 is now becoming lead platform i.e EA with Dead Space, Fifa and Mirrors Edge

    Also you see deavs actually starting to make the choice to make exclusive PS3 games...this wasnt really happening before unless Sony were part of it.

    Are Calgon and Kryon the same person? 360 Sells more than 3000 units in a week in Japan, and he's got his cock in his hand.

    The reality is that the 360 only wells well in one market, the US, and even there its getting whooped by the Wii. It sells OK here, and pretty much shite everywhere else. MS blew $1bn on RROD, and are now having to cut prices just to remain competitive with Sony and Nintendo. Games like Gears will only interest hardcore gamers, and the PS3 has MGS 4, Resistance and Killzone anyway. All of a sudden MS have realised that their homoerotic shooters arent getting the job done, and are trying to be Sony by copying Singstar with Lips, and bringing out those laughable Avatars. Unfortuantely for them, Sony are much more established in this area than they are, and Home and LBP will literally walk over the likes of Lips and Rock Band dlc!

    Do I like the 360's games? Yep. Do I like the machine's noise and that it's only a games machine? Nope.

    Do I like the PS3's games? Yep. Do I like the media stuff for streaming and the blu-ray, that I get along with the games machine that I wanted anyway? Yep.

    I like them both, but I prefer all the extra stuff that I get with the PS3. The Sony haters really should grow up and get some perspective: some people want more from their games machine. If you just want games then the 360 wins, if you want more then the PS3 is better in my opinion.

    I blame Play TV, Little Big Planet effect, Xbox Live subscription ( £40 p/y cheaper if you look ) and the fact the 360 premium with 60gb HD ( £160 ) and additional WIFI adapter ( £60 ) actuallys costs you £220, that's why I'm adding a PS3 to my already huge console collection.

    Microsoft still don't have a Mario or more recently SackBoy, Viva Pinata isn't gonna be enough for the under 18's!

    PS. Wasn't it weird to see the Wii/DS almost totally ignored by visitors at the Eurogamer Expo ( for me @ 7pm Tues ) !

    To be honest as far as 360 vs PS3 sales go I can't see there ever being a huge margin either side, they have both been successful consoles.

    Personally I do think the 360 line-up + £130 price tag will make it the more attractive option to the general public this xmas, lets see if it works.

    I own a 360 myself and don't feel any need for a PS3 right now, as it is my PC is better than both consoles so even my 360 is getting less use. Oddly my Wii is slowly getting more use again.

    This competition is great, if Sony and Microsoft keep going like this over future generations then it will keep the prices down and the games great, so everybody is a winner.

They can live in denial pretending they know better than anyone else for all I care, aslong as they dont intrude where their "facts" arent welcome... it's trolling, it's dull and tedious and it's the one thing I dont like about gaming sites/forums.

    I am going to to try an balance the equation now:

    PS3 = 360 + bluray

    Both consoles are selling well, no huge differences in game lineups (not a huge amount of exclusives on either side)

    They are both great consoles, some choose one while others choose the other, and some just buy both.

    Eitherway without splitting hairs they both play games to the same standard.

    Now can everybody be happy with that?

    Play games, be happy, stop bitching.
