Premium DLC shortcuts for Godfather II

Get best guns, mobsters for cash.

EA will provide lazy-but-wealthy Godfather II players with premium DLC shortcuts from 23rd April.

The first provides five top-class guns with no questions asked. The money: 320 Microsoft Points (GBP 2.70 / EUR 3.85) or USD 4. The merchandise: the Modern Dillinger, the .700 the Magnum Impact, the Herzstopper, the MG-S1 Sniper Wolfe and the Street Sweeper.

The second provides one top-class mobster with no questions asked. The money: same as above. The merchandise: Jimmy Lira, who's talents include arson, medical training, engineering and safe-cracking. He packs a level-two machine gun, too.

There's a third - the Pentangeli map pack - but this only offers brand new Junkyard and Cuba multiplayer areas. The money: 540 MSP (GBP 4.60 / EUR 6.50) or USD 6.75.

Finally, The Corleone Bundle will wrap all three packs together for 800 MSP (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60) or USD 10.

The Godfather II launches for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on 10th April. Head over to our hands-on impressions to see how it's shaping up.

I'd hope no-one would be stupid enough to do it, but people are stupid enough. Sigh.

    Taxing the lazy isn't extortion.
  • myiagros #7 3 years ago

Surely this is the same as MMO players buying gold??

it allows those with less time or inclination to experience more of what the game has to offer.

As a developer and player i am against the practice, but if buying gold in an MMO is OK then is this?
  • sneetch #8 3 years ago

Waiting for the title that will have premium DLC consisting of save games that start you a second before each cut-scene and before each achievement/trophy unlock.

Save you having to play that pesky game at all.
  • makeamazing #9 3 years ago

I wish people would vote with their wallets and not buy this kind of thing. This is not really what the whole DLC should be about. :(

But i know its only going to get worse.
  • Cyclone #10 3 years ago

A couple of years ago you'd simply be allowed to enter a cheat to unlock these items, if you were so inclined. I generally think cheats can ruin a game; being charged for them is poor form though.
  • vegard #11 3 years ago

cheats might ruin a game, but in order to use them you usually have to seek them out online or whatever. this new trend of paying for them instead sucks. sometimes i like to play a game and just enjoy the setting and mood, without having to worry about dying while i check out all the small details that usually might pass me by.
  • Derblington #12 3 years ago

Vegard - Just play the game on 'easy'. You don't need to buy extras to do that.

This won't stop because there are people out there that want this. As mentioned, it's very similar to buying gold in MMOs.

I wouldn't buy it myself, but for those that do want to buy them, fair play. It doesn't effect my game one way or the other. I actually think it's a pretty good practice if you can make it work - make more money out of the casual gamer, doesn't effect the "hardcore" gamer (except to enrage them unnecessarily on internet sites), and ensures our type of games continue to sell rather than wasting money on minigame tripe.

@ronuds Shitty games? Have you seen what EA have been releasing lately? Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Battlefield BC. All pretty good games if you ask me. This whole pay for cheats thing is outrageous though, I remember the good old days using the internet to find cheats. DLC like this seems to be the Action Replay of the current generation; a rip off
  • ronuds #14 3 years ago

"@ronuds Shitty games? Have you seen what EA have been releasing lately? Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Battlefield BC."

Battlefield BC is shitty. Owned it for about 5 minutes. The rest, ok fine - but that's 2 of 20000.

I don't care if it's "in style" or "vogue" to trash EA anymore. I'm still doing it because I still believe it's deserved, and this tactic by them is a perfect example of why complacency is bad!

    Is this an Aprils Fool?
  • kangarootoo #16 3 years ago

If this doesn't sell they probably won't do it again.

And if it does sell they should absolutely do it, because it will clearly be what customers want. And giving customers what they want is the job of any developer.

Freaking out at EA for this is nonsense, because it is the gamers who will decide whether it sinks or floats in the end.
  • zuljin #17 3 years ago

    @Paulie_P
I doubt it, they did the same for Godfather I.
  • theiceman #18 3 years ago

Bullshit. If your too lazy to play it without extra DLC then you shouldn't play it.

Companies ripping off customers is not new or clever.

    /rant over
  • Derblington #19 3 years ago

I can't see that ever being the case.
  • metallicorphan #20 3 years ago

i got the first games DLC,at least that DLC included a nice big wad of ingame cash which proved handy
  • polaris70 #21 3 years ago

Paying for better weapons? Do I amuse you? Do you find me funny? WTF are you laughing at me for, punk? No, tell me, I'm here to amuse you....you punk WTF.
  • smelly #22 3 years ago

sigh - wont be buying this game then. shame - liked the first game - one of my best wii games.
  • Spekingur #23 3 years ago

So, are all these unlockable in-game without you needing to buy the DLCs? This announcement seems a little vague in that respect.
  • Shane86 #24 3 years ago

How about posting a source Eurogamer? Especially on April 1st.
  • vegard #25 3 years ago

"I can't see that ever being the case. "

10 years ago i never pictured us paying for weapon skin packs either:) still, i'm aware that all of these extras are optional. it's just that if we consumers start buying them at large it's going to get worse. if EA, capcom etc discover that people are willing to pay for these kind of things, they WILL stretch it further. it's in their nature;) with that said, i have no clue how well such DLC actually sells. for now i'd rather stay very much against this kind of milking.

sorry for the somewhat broken english

  • zarglu #26 3 years ago

Looks like they figured that rather than having cheat codes in the game giving unlocks for free, they'd be better off making unlock "DLC". Can't say I blame them for that, if people are ready to pay, they would be silly not to make them pay.
  • bad09 #27 3 years ago

So EA, not content with putting a price on skins and everything else, are now starting to charge for cheats?

    DLC the future of gaming.

    / turns on PS2
  • DUFFMAN5 #28 3 years ago

The same as the first Godfather and Dead Space 9and many others I'm sure), don't really see the problem, if you want buy if you don't well just don't.
Looking forward to the game all the same played the first on xbox and 360
  • kangarootoo #29 3 years ago

"Bullshit. If your too lazy to play it without extra DLC then you shouldn't play it."

Says who? The "game-morality police"? The commision for "putting in the effort"? Your mum? (sorry, too good an opportunity)

"Companies ripping off customers is not new or clever."

Its not "ripping off", as the player has the choice to not buy and simply invest their time playing the game instead.

If people don't like it they won't buy it, and if people do like it then EA should give them what they like.

And if somebody buys this knowing what they are getting and then later regrets it and cries "rip off", they are frankly a simpleton.
  • skillian #30 3 years ago

If people don't like it they won't buy it, and if people do like it then EA should give them what they like.

Of course people like cheats, they have since gaming was first around. Rather than giving people what they like, EA are taking away what players like by not including them in the game. They are giving 10% of people what they like (although "like" is clearly the wrong word here), and taking it away from the other 90%.

But as a "business decision" it's the right one, you are right. Just like charging £75 for a Premiership ticket, or charging a £5 weekly subscription for a phone wallpaper.
