No multiplayer in LittleBigPlanet PSP News

PSP News by Tom Bramwell

19 August, 2009

Sony has had to cut multiplayer out of LittleBigPlanet in order to get it to work on the PSP, but other than that the game's remarkably complete.

"The one thing we've lost is multiplayer. You've got full physics systems, you got full create mode, you've got all the aspects of LittleBigPlanet - you can upload, download, ad-hoc share with people - but we haven't got multiplayer," senior producer Mark Green told Eurogamer at gamescom today.

"It's a trade-off. The system is physically capable of doing multiplayer, but perhaps not with the full physics system. On the technical side of things you lose a third of the processing power or a third of the system memory just to do multiplayer at all. With those limitations we couldn't achieve it."

Multiplayer was kind of a big deal in the PS3 version, to say the least, so this is a definite blow. On the plus side, the game is, as Green says, fully featured otherwise, besides the use of two planes rather than three.

"The PS3 had those three planes you could move around on, but the first thing we asked Media Molecule was whether we could reduce that to two, and they were like, well, most of the levels we built can be played with two anyway, so that's not a problem," Green explained.

Green also said that he too wasn't a fan of the jump handling in the PS3 version, but that the team at Sony's Cambridge studio had improved on it for the PSP version.

Multi was fun in LBP, but I can see it not working on PSP.

LBP was a bit easy and dull in single player, when played with the missus we had a riot and we played it non stop until completion. We even went back through levels to get 100% completion etc.

No multi in LBP PSP means no excuse for me to pcik up a PSPGo so me and the missus can play some more and in fact no reason for me to buy the game, boo.

That's a shame.

What was the jump issue, even my missus could control it and the only console game she'd played before was Soduko

I can understand getting rid of online play but Multiplayer is a massive blow, it's only really fun with two people. I've played on my own but it's kind of lifeless without another mate to help you.

For many the multiplayer was a huge aspect of LBP. I did play it many times with firends, but i loved it on single player just as much. Not too much of a trade off for me.

the 'jump issue' was the utterly godawful loose handling of Sackboy when he lands from a jump, normally with far too much intertia to prevent him from careening right off the narrow little ledge you're trying to land him on. Its a flaw with the game that I felt was majorly overlooked- in a platformer, surely the platforming part needs to be sharp and precise, not floaty and loose. A lot of people ad problems with it too, judging by the people I played with online.

I think this will be missed as I love the multiplayer in LBP, however I rarely play my psp online so I think it will be fine as single player. So long as the developer levels maintain the high standard of the ps3 version.

I'm with berelain, the PS3 version had horrible jumping. For me it ruined the experience. When you have played all the best platform games over the years, you understand the secret is to make the game very precise, so when you die, you cannot blame anyone but yourself.

I am also pleased to see they are taking out the annoying 3rd dimension.

Wasn't fussed before, but these changes could make it the great I wished it was. May go out and get a PSP.

Multiplayer is a huge loss imo. LBP is so fun with people, especially when ye are in the room together. It's good in single player but the experience is much better in multiplayer imo.

Man MP is what LBP is all about, its not that much fun sat there playing by yourself. Huge loss. Pity when the game was looking so close to its PS3 brother. Even just Adhoc multiplayer would be nice

I also say hurrah to the fixed jump. It threw out the difficulty/repetition curve for me, as I kept falling off stuff I had no business falling off.

I was really quite disappointed when I first got LBP and just played it on my own, and quickly resigned it to the games shelf with a sad face.

However, a few months ago me and my girlfriend started playing it 2UP and it's like it's an entirely different game! We both completely adore it. It's so much more fun.

To say this PSP news is saddening would be a massive understatement.
