Nintendo clears up Wii Speak issue
You will be able to sell them on.
Nintendo has cleared up confusion over second-hand sales of the new Wii Speak peripheral.
MTV multiplayer recently reported that each peripheral comes with a special code. These codes, said the article, were to be used to access the new Wii Speak channel, and could be replaced if lost or stolen. Uproar ensued as various bits of the internet accused Nintendo of trying to stop second-hand sales of Wii Speak.
However, a Nintendo UK representative has now told Eurogamer there's nothing to worry about.
"Nintendo can confirm that when consumers purchase the Wii Speak accessory, they are provided with a Wii Download Ticket with a unique number. The ticket, which can be redeemed via the Wii Shop Channel, will enable the user to download the Wii Speak Channel free of charge to a single Wii console," the representative stated.
"Any consumer who may have misplaced their Wii Download Ticket number for the Wii Speak Channel or require a new number following a Wii exchange may contact their local Nintendo Customer Services department, where they can request a replacement Wii Download Ticket number."
So in other words, if you buy a Wii Speak for your Wii you get a Wii code for the Wii Speak channel, and you can get a Wii replacement if you Wii lose it or Wii buy a second-hand Wii Speak without the original Wii code. Wii thank goodness for that.
The Wii Speak microphone and speaker accessory is out on 5th December, priced at around GBP 25. For GBP 59 you can buy it bundled with Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City, which is out the same day.

It's pretty obvious that Nintendo is now backtracking, realising the silly mistake it had made.

Could be one of two things: They could be -discouraging- second hand sales. I'm more likely to buy new than arse about with customer support reps trying to get a code. I guess on the same note they could be trying to prey on the lazy who would also not like to arse about with reps and just buy the channel instead.
The other is it could be a monitor on piracy? This is stretching but if they can somehow monitor when someone's using the channel without having redeemed a code then they can possibly use that in their quest against evil homebrewers.

Yeah, because the Wii is a veritable hotbed of piracy and homebrew.

My understanding is thus. In order to use the Wii Speak service, somebody has to pay £60 for an official Nintendo microphone and speaker set. And a special code system prevents them from just buying any old mic for a fiver and relying on their TV speakers.
Is that true? You HAVE to buy a £60 mic to chat online?
Edit: Ahhhhhhhh. £25 for the mic (which still seems steep) and £60 for an Animal Crossing bundle. I stand self-corrected.

£7.99 if you have a Head (formerly Zavvi) nearby, £24.99 for the bundle.

That is how I read it too. Though I'm not sure how they would be able to tell the difference. I think they are basically saying it will be ok, without actively condoning second hand selling on of Wii kit (which is understandable)

Well if I can't even talk to kids, I ain't buying it.

It actually is.
Edit: I also think smelly is right, Nintendo is making sure they can track eventual dirty practices within the Channel. With all this mess they seem to want to know which console is talking to another one. Seems fair. Obviously they wont say "we're doing this because you children might be bothered by "dirty old men" (sic.) while playing with their Nintendo".

Missed opportunity to make "playing with their wii" a funny pun for once

How are they going to do that?
That's what friend codes are for. (this is different to friend codes)

I've just had the most vivid dream, it seemed to go on for ages and ages and ended up with Liverpool 8th in the Prem and all but out of Europe, thank god I woke up from that horrible nightmare.

*Edit* Did that peripheral come out yet? I don't think I've switched my Wii on since November of 2008...
