EA confirms LOTR expansion

Electronic Arts has confirmed that a new expansion for Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II is on the way - and that it'll hit the shops later this year.

Rumours of the expansion pack, which is subtitled The Rise of the Witch-king, first began to emerge earlier this week, and it turns out our old friend Internet Reports was right on the money this time.

Apparently the expansion will "enhance every existing feature" of the game, letting you take command of the evil rising in Middle-Earth and enjoy the epic battles that took place before the events of the movie trilogy.

You can expect a brand new single-player campaign, plus a new faction and extra units for the existing factions. The storyline will follow the Witch-king's rise to power, the domination of Angmar and the invasion of Arnor, home of Aragorn's ancestors. You can play as the Angmar faction in skirmish, multiplayer and War of the Ring modes.

The Create-A-Hero feature has been updated, with the Troll class getting extra weapons and armour for more customisation options. War of the Ring mode now features enhanced army persistence, a new siege dynamic on the Living World Map, and unified territories that act as strategic control bases.

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II, The Rise of the Witch-king (working title) is out this winter.
