See EA's Crysis in action

Trailer now on EG TV.

A new trailer for PC first-person shooter Crysis is now available for viewing on Eurogamer TV.

Crysis is being published by EA and developed by Crytek, the studio which brought us the Far Cry series.

It promises to deliver a "new kind of gameplay challenge" and features customisable weapons and armour plus dynamic environments. Your job is to defend humankind against an army of aliens intent on taking over Earth.

EA has yet to announce a release date for Crysis, but chances are it'll be out by the end of the year.

    mummy!!
I want to play it - looks incredible.

But I thought it was a dx10 game so it'll be Vista bound...
  • TurdBreaker #2 6 years ago

Does look very good - especially the interaction of the player running thru the folliage - how the leaves all move and react accordingly.

    Looking forward to this..

"EA's Crysis". Heh, that'll piss off the haters.

    "EA's Crysis"

    LOL
  • PearOfAnguish #5 6 years ago

    What happened to Ubisoft?
  • Dizzy #6 6 years ago

Yes it is DX10 so only Vista and possibly 360.
  • peterfll #7 6 years ago

Hmmm.... and what spec will you need? At what price?
  • reality_cheque #8 6 years ago

I hope Ecco gets served up as a can of tuna!

This video looks tasty as fook. I hope this is out on the 360 so I don't need to spend shitloads on a new PC.
  • ecureuil #9 6 years ago

It will probably be out on PS3, too.

People seem to be forgetting about that..
  • Talha #10 6 years ago

@reality_cheque : Bad news mate - you WILL have to spend shitloads, since there is going to be a PC version only, and that too, DirectX10 only.

The game looks amazing - one of those few ones where you feel like you will spend anything to have it running on your rig.
  • WicKeD #11 6 years ago

The game's not limited to DX10, it also supports DX9 so you can play it on archaic architecture too. Knowing EA, I expect 360, PS3 and Tefal Toaster versions at a later date too.

    "new kind of gameplay challenge"

Those bloody mutant monkesy in Far Cry were a new kind of gameplay challenge, but not in a good way.

Looks flippin' amazing though, a dash of actual gameplay and the package will be complete ;)
  • Talha #13 6 years ago

@WicKeD : I don't know - having read a Crytek interview, I came away with the impression that (1) the game will only look and feel like this with DX10 and (2) it will be PC-only. I think I read it on 1up.com, not sure though.

What the HELL is with that stupid alien thing at the end?

    It was looking so lovely! Shooting aliens is b o r i n g.

    Wow.

Now that looks seriously amazing. I have needed to update my laptop for quite some time now. This and Elder Scrolls could do it!
  • Furbs #17 6 years ago

Talha, the GPU in the 360 is pretty much DX10 compatible anyway. No doubt a PC fanboy will slap me down for that though (yes I know, "pretty much" isnt the same as 100% but I'm sure some of the effects could be sacrificed/emulated).

It'll probably debut on the PC as a DX10 "posterboy" then get a 360 port just like Far Cry.
  • reality_cheque #18 6 years ago

@Talha: Then they've probably just lost a customer, unless this isn't out until early 2008 as that's about the first chance I'll get the upgrade the machine :(
  • Xerx3s #19 6 years ago

As far as im aware, the xbx2 was designed with dx10 game ports in mind. And knowing EA, it will be on every platform (expext mobile & ds versions as well) and have roughly 20 000 incarnations. Expect: Chav Crysis, Crysis Underground, etc. ;p
  • Talha #20 6 years ago

@Furbs: I am afraid I have further bad news. If you read the latest Vista-related articles, they say that hardware will either be DX10 capable or it won't - no more component compliance.

Even so, if X360 IS DX10 capable, then so will be PS3 - and that is great news for us non-PC fanboys :-).

@reality: Don't worry - it might be PC-exclusive RIGHT NOW, but you never know, do you? Let's keep our fingers crossed

Although I do wonder - Crytek guys seemed pretty determined to keep it on PC (Far Cry console ports/versions were all done by Ubisoft). I guess if the dev chooses to stick to the PC, consoles are out of luck even for EA games.

IIRC, from the recent feature in EDGE, the head honcho at Crysis was pretty clear about not wanting to focus on anything apart from the PC. However he didn't really seem to rule out letting others do the conversions for them.

360 is nearly DX10 specced... (in fact that was always the plan of MS... DX10 is now based more on ATI specs)

In theory PS3 is as well... except for the small detail that there is no DX10 on PS3 so it will have to be ported to a different library (OpenGL?)
  • Tomo #23 6 years ago

    That looks... sumptuous.

Somehow, I don't think my 6800 GT is going to like that :[
  • alimokrane #24 6 years ago

Is Crytek owned by EA now or what ? please tell me it's not.
  • Darkedge #25 6 years ago

360 is DX10 enabled - if it's DX10 it will have been developed on XNA so that means PC, 360 and yes PS3 but i'll bet MS will pay for it to be 360/pc exclusive for a while.
  • Darkedge #26 6 years ago

    Crytek are still independant..

and I know why they quit working with Ubisoft.

Ubisoft sold the film rights to Far Cry to Uwe Boll. That would piss anybody off enough.
  • Dizzy #27 6 years ago

    >XNA so that means PC, 360 and yes PS3

    Errr???

    XNA on PS3?

I guess you mean the capabilities of the engine.... yeah they should run on PS3 (unless they cannot get rid of unified shaders).
  • alimokrane #28 6 years ago

    @Darkedge

Thanks and I hope they stay independant.
  • Darkedge #29 6 years ago

XNA is a platform agnostic development envionment. In theory anything developed on it should be able to run on any machine that XNA has a plugin for...

"XNA is a platform agnostic development envionment. In theory anything developed on it should be able to run on any machine that XNA has a plugin for... "

    Hehehe...

I guess you are right in a naive kind of way ;)

Try finding that PS3 plugin :)
  • Xerx3s #31 6 years ago

"Even so, if X360 IS DX10 capable, then so will be PS3 - and that is great news for us non-PC fanboys :-). "

Not true. Like dizzy said, the xbx2 has been more or less designed with dx10 in the back of the head. However, the ps3 will use linux and DX10 is a ms lib. It doesnt really matter though, the ps3 will most likely have their own lib that is very similar so developers can port stuff quite easely. I mean, you would recon that sony learned their lesson, right?

    /crosses fingers.

And afaik, XNA covers a large variety of things to make development times shorter. Its not all code related (not sure as i get me info about it from the news). This could mean that it could be in part on the ps3.
  • Darkedge #32 6 years ago

Dizzy MS have said they will create a PS3 libary for XNA if developers ask for it.

Don't think i'm the naive one here :p

"XNA is a platform agnostic development envionment. In theory anything developed on it should be able to run on any machine that XNA has a plugin for..."

Yes, but given that XNA is a MS software suite, not a third party framework angling for market share, why would MS develop an ps3 plugin? would they even open it up to allow others to develop one?

I guess you can make the case that that PS3 games are always gonig to be made and for MS its better to own part of that process even if the target platform is not theirs, but at this stage of the game, with the next gen fight just starting - can't see this happening in the forseeable future.

Surely XNA multiple build targets are reliant on the commonality of the underlying MS libs - whilst to the developer it should be a simple matter of choosing a new deploy target, not sure that in reality building a ps3 plugin is as simple as that.

    Just my $0.02...
  • Dizzy #34 6 years ago

"Dizzy MS have said they will create a PS3 libary for XNA if developers ask for it. "

I think "ask" would be the understatement of the year here ;)

I think MS was just making fun of Sonys dev environment when Allard said that. But who knows ;) Maybe some companies will eventually write plugins for XNA. Expect to pay for them big time :)

Note - RE: DX10/ Vista exclusivity
(From Crysis article in this month's Edge)

Will Microsoft attempt to make Crysis another Vista exclusive? "No" is the instant reply, "Crysis is not Vista exclusive. It supports DX9 and Shader Model 2.0 for XP and up to DX10 and SM 4.0 for Vista because DX10 won't be on XP. But there is DX9.L, which will be the counterpart of DX10 in XP..."
  • space_ace #37 6 years ago

quite mysleading title there - this is no trailer at all
  • Tejstar #38 6 years ago

This is not new, this video has been out for 2 months already...
  • SeesThroughAll #39 6 years ago

Disappointing that it's a game rather than actual crisis over at EA...
  • Pablo2k5 #40 6 years ago

    @Tejstar

Wrong! There was a 'similar' video to promote the CryEngine2 that came out a couple of months ago.

...and I don't remember anyone ever suggesting this would be an Vista exclusive either. ;)

As a WW2 nut (yeah still can't get enough), I long for pacific jungle warfare like this! What an incredibly realistic jungle environment!
