Free DoD: Source weekend

To kick off on Friday.

Last week saw the release of the new Day of Defeat: Source summer update, which features a new game type, Detonation, plus two new maps.

To celebrate, Valve is planning to hold a free weekend so you can try DoD: Source out. It'll kick off at 1pm PST (that's 5am GMT) this Friday, finishing at the same time on Monday. Should be fun.

If you just can't wait for the weekend, DoD: Source is available now from Steam, priced $19.95.

Meanwhile, Valve is still hard at work on Half-Life 2: Episode 2 - of which more news, "along with a few other announcements," is promised "in the next few weeks," according to the latest Steam update. We'll keep you posted...

Ironic - Free mods make Valve what they are today.

Valve - killing off 'free mods'

DoD:S is worth every penny I paid for it, so no complaints here. If you haven't already tried the new maps, I would recommend giving them a go - they're pretty good fun.

Oo... I might actually be available to try it out this weekend.

if they are killing off free mods why havent they shut down Black Messa Source? I am sure they could if they wanted to, its HL1 after all.

I bought DoD:S a few days ago and it's great for a quick pick up and play blast. I've had some superb last stands holding off the enemy hordes.

It's like Zulu and all the WWII action movies rolled into one.

Bah! I preloaded for the last free weekend but never got a chance to play. What did I do the other day? Uninstalled Steam. Bah!

@LetsGo: I'd be pretty sure half life made valve what they are today. counter-strike was just a happy coincidence. and with source, it takes a lot more effort to build a mod, so valve charge you a little bit for css or dods.

imo, dods is the best example valve have for HDR effects. it's such a pretty game, and the first ww2 game that really sucked me in. i got it after the last free weekend, so i assume it worked fine.

the only worry i have with the free weekend is all the css noobs coming along for the free ride

Anyone know how much will need to be downloaded? I'm assuming I'll already have some of the content from my other Source games.

Definitely looking to try this one out.

Skillian, if you have HL2 already installed, that's roughly 73% completed already. I downloaded it last night, and I think it was roughly 200MB.

    Ooh, nice. Thanks ShekkyBoy.

Definitely be playing this come Saturday then.

Mmm yeah, think i'll have a go at this. Get a break from all that retrograde quake nonsense...
  • skillian #12 6 years ago

Yeah, cause WWII isn't retro :p

WWII could have been settled in a much more civilised manner had it been fought as a ztndm3 best of 5. I bet Churchhill had l33t bunnying skillz.

@johnsto: yeah, and so in their frustration they take it out on normal DoD players!
