New 2D Worms game dated for PC

Reloaded will cost 18 quid in August.

Worms will make a glorious 2D return to PC on 26th August with Worms: Reloaded. It's been 10 years since a new 2D game has come out on PC, apparently.

Perhaps that's why Worms: Reloaded will cost £17.99 (£16.19 for the time being on Steam).

Thankfully, Reloaded boasts loads of content. Graphics are HD and Worms has "never looked this good", reckons the press release.

There are 65 single-player missions split into normal and tougher Warzone levels. There's also a Bodycount mode that pits one worm against a never ending spawn of enemies and records success to leaderboards. On top of that are modes Forts, Crate/Shopper, Bazooka and Grenade (BnG), and Rope Racing.

Customisation spans skin, victory gravestones, voices, HUD, title, hats, and you'll be able to buy treats with currency earned for progressing in the single-player game.

There's also multiplayer, of course - either locally or online for four people.

Weapons from Worms' past are all stuffed in the warchest, as well as new additions Super Punk Buster, Poison Strike, Worship, Sentry Gun, Electromagnet and Buffalo of Lies.

Rounding the package off is a landscape editor, which enables maps to be made and shared with friends.

:o yay. Although my laptop is rubbish so probs wont be able to run it. But stick this on PSN (this is the kind of game that would have me tempted by Move) and I'm there!
  • dsmx #2 2 years ago

So spadge how do you feel now that your finally releasing something that people have wanted for 10 years?
  • Doctor_What #3 2 years ago

I hope it comes with a new song. I had the original when it first came out on the PC and the music track was great :)

Macksed is right - if the Move could be used to replace the mouse on the Playstation this would be a really good reason to pick it up on PSN. It's not been announced yet, but I think it's safe to say that this new version of Worms will spend the next decade being converted to every single new platform on the planet.

will get it on 360 if it makes it, but pls make the achievements a bit more realistic, the 1st one was great but 2nd they are mostly stupid achievements.

Doesn't look much better than Worms World Party, if you ask me. In fact the only increase in quality that I can figure is the higher resolution. Also way too expensive.

Bodycount sounds like a lot of fun, though.

No mention of a weapons editor. I miss The Fiddler. :-(
  • Skandalle #10 2 years ago

More Worms can only be a good thing.
Though i did prefer the graphics back in the day, when your worm was a mere white smidgen on the screen.
  • Goffee #11 2 years ago

Still play Worms lots on my PSP, (and there was a demo of the new Worms: Battle Island) demo up on the store this week.

But, be good to get it back on a big screen tho!

During our years as a 3rd party developer, there was very little demand for PC titles.

Now we're back to being an indie-publisher again, we'd been looking at doing this for a while. Given the legacy of Armageddon and World Party, we new we had to bring a lot of features and content, as well as good support via Steamworks (online, community and all that). So yes, very happy to be calling the shots on what we develop and for what platforms.

We're trying to support a wide range of PC's (from netbooks upwards) so we're confident it'll run on most systems. Looks great in HD though :-)

Hasn't there already been a 2D worms game called worms reloaded way back when?
  • tenofspades #14 2 years ago

no different than the others really from what I've seen of the video. Good for nostalgics or people who've never tried worms though.

It's a shame it isn't being released at an attractive price. I was honestly expecting it to be £6 tops. I've already bought three versions of Worms in my life and certainly won't be spending £18 on a HD remake. Here's hoping for a Steam 75% off sale at some point...

Edit: It's £5 cheaper from the US Steam store too. Poor show Team17...

I remember being absolutely shit hot with the ninja rope on the PC. I then downloaded the game on PSN and told all present that I was THE MAN with the rope. Watch this, I said. And then proceeded to completely suck at it in the biggest way possible. It's not the same!

Like the idea of a level editor, though 90% of the shared maps will clearly be of the cock and balls variety. Which might actually make for a good game, to be fair.

Spadge, where is the Alien Breed and Worms 2: Armageddon on PS3?
  • Caimbeul #18 2 years ago

    Incomming!

/couldnt believe it had not been said yet.

Oh you shouldn't have a problem running this on just about any PC hardware (hell, a modern scientific calculator would almost do ;) ).

Watching the trailers brought back fond memories of playing Worms and Scorched Earth in University, I'll be watching my Steam friends, as soon as two of them buy this I'll pick it up (surprised there's no Mac version though, if I was a Steam developer I'd be considering dual platform development especially for "simpler" games like this, mind you maybe they do now Mac support on Steam is fairly recent so this must have been in development since before that was even announced).

While Worms is an awesome franchise it feels like there is lot of beating behind a "no entry" walled-off section, and that the original horse has long been pulped into dust and replaced by many others.

To add insult to injury we're being charged nearly 20£ for essentially a DLC. Feels like PC gamers are being robbed to buy a new horse rather than being served.
  • Macdory #21 2 years ago

    US: $17.99
    UK: £16.19 (40% higher)
    EU Tier 1: 17,99€ (31% higher)
    EU Tier 2: 13,49€ (2% lower)
    AU: $17.99 (prices are equal)

I was all set to buy it, but I hate being shafted for the same 1's and 0's ....
  • spadge #22 2 years ago

@ Artemus soon, just waiting for certification really.
  • spadge #23 2 years ago

@Macdory, theres a whole host of reasons behind that (which I'm not getting into) and it's the same for practically all software releases the world over. I'd move to the USA, if I were you. It certainly isn't as straight forward as pumping a value into a currency conversion site.
  • Nuronv #24 2 years ago

This is a story of courage, honour, and worms.
  • Shinetop #25 2 years ago

I don't care if it costs $1 everywhere but here: I'm not going to pay €18 for another Worms game. Price it around €10 and we might be talking.
  • LFace #26 2 years ago

Fully agree with Shinetop. Charging 18 quid for the same game we've bought several times that frankly is no different other than "HD" visuals, nevermind the fact that PC has been having HD visuals since the 90s at the very least.

And didnt the original Worms 2 onwards use higher resolutions than 640x480 back the in the day ?

18 quid, sheesh, I ask yer..
  • PearOfAnguish #27 2 years ago

The visuals are horrible anyway, they have been since they stopped using the nice pixellated graphics. Just do a version of Worms 1 that runs on modern systems.
  • Dezm0nd #28 2 years ago

I was a bit surprised to see the 18 quid price tag. After buying the two XBLA games for 800 each I'd find it difficult to part with twice the price for what will essentially be the same experience.

I find it's sort of in the same field as bomberman. I wouldn't pay over a tenner for it and I never deviate from the original ruleset. Less is more in both price and stuff rammed in.
  • Nephirion #29 2 years ago

I love the way Steam fucks everyone off in the UK regarding pricing.
  • Ashcroft #30 2 years ago

They've already perfected Worms, go make something else guys.
  • 9of9 #31 2 years ago

Unless this is the physics engine used whenever I blow up a piece of the terrain - http://gi zmodo.com/5591613/incredible-ph... - I'm not interested in paying that kind of ludicrous price-tag for a game I could get for £4 from a bargain bin and already own several versions of.

Hell, I could code an 'HD' version myself from scratch in a couple of weeks. More than a fiver, this is not worth.
  • hiddenranbir #32 2 years ago

Surely HD is a hook for consolers, not PC gamers? :\
  • GaryHoward #33 2 years ago

Yes, another Worms game, can't wait. Loved Worms since the mid 90s. Just hope my averagely good laptop can run it on high settings, it should do :)
  • Stompy #34 2 years ago

    1) A bedroom coder makes a game based from a public domain (freeware) game
1a) Just change the tanks to worms for winnage

    2) Team 17 buys the game
2b) And employs the coder too, as I remember

    3) Sell to Amiga gamers
3b) Who probably have the tank version already
3c) Who definitely have a copy of tank version if they had the relevant coverdisk from Amiga Power

    4) Then sell this game in perpetuity because it has worms with silly voices in

Well done, gamers, you really are the canny consumers you claim yourselves to be.
  • Shinetop #35 2 years ago

Please tell me you're not talking about Scorched Earth.

Also since when do gamers claim they're canny consumers?

Gamers are pretty canny considering Worms is an absolute classic title for more reasons than the silly voices.
