Prince of Persia for XBLA News

Xbox 360 News by Oli Welsh

16 May, 2007

Ubisoft has announced that it will release a remake of the original Prince of Persia on Xbox Live Arcade early this summer.

Prince of Persia Classic is being developed by Gameloft, the French mobile gaming specialist responsible for the mobile versions of Ubi's recent Prince of Persia trilogy: The Sands of Time, Warrior Within and The Two Thrones.

The game will give Jordan Mechner's influential 1989 creation a 21st-century graphical overhaul, presenting its pinpoint-precise 2D platforming with 3D characters, environments and lighting. The effect is strongly reminiscent of the recent Prince games, and rather gorgeous, as we think you'll agree.

On top of the cosmetic changes, there will be a few new traps, puzzles and enemies thrown in to keep Prince veterans on their toes.

The original Prince of Persia gave players 60 minutes to rescue the Princess from her fate at the hands of the evil Vizier - either marry him, or die.

Head over to our Prince of Persia Classic gamepage for the latest trailer and screenshots.

could be good... never played the original, but a 60min time limit? that would be nailbitingly tense play time :P

neat! better than just giving us an emulated version of the original with a shitty border (which gets resized instantly) and 'enhanced' graphics

Isn't there an XBLA game out today? Anyone know what we'll be treated with this week?

I spent hours on the old blank and white version trying to time the jumps through those metal shutters only to fall down a pit a couple of steps on.

PoP was great back in the day and I loved it, but please no more retro game on XBLA please, updated or otherwise. I want new stuff not rehashed old stuff I can pay for again.

I played the original to death... I've always remembered in my head completing it with 23 minutes left... but now I can't remember that's my brain telling fibs at me. I hope it's true...

Looks great but I hope they change the levels and add a lot more content than the original.

I had to play the original several times through to get in under the hour time limit and playing essentailly the same again with a graphical make over just doesn't rock my boat.

Not sure the hour time limit would cut it now a days either.

Had a quick bash at work on partnernet...Graphics are amazing! Levels exactly the same as far as I have got...Could recognise them from my old PC version where the Prince wore that gay white rompersuit...Lots more enemies from the very start...the Prince has a bigger reportoire can flip jump of walls etc...Combat is really good..controls a little lacking at times but overall very impressive

The original was awesome - running on my old 286 in EGA!! Ok, so the graphics weren't great, but the character animation/fluidity of movement was unparalleled at the time, and the gameplay was brilliant. Just be thankful they've decided not to port the old game straight across and have instead opted to redesign the graphics - that would have really sucked.

Flash back does not need any GFX changes, look at the crappy Mega CD version with those horrid 3D animations.
No it should always be those lovely simple polygons.

Back to PoP, hopefully they give the option to play the original untouched.

Original was soooo good with CGA graphics (white, black, magenta, purple) on an old PC back in the day. Good call to revive it for XBLA.

I was thinking "Ho-hum, played a remake on the Mega CD ages ago". And then I saw the delicious-looking eye candy from the XBLA version. Mm...eye candy.
