MW2 Stimulus DLC doesn't work

Update: Major Nelson reckons it's fixed.

Update #6: "The MW2 Title Update is now live! It may take a few minutes for everyone worldwide to get it - our apologies for the delay." Not our words - the words of Xbox Live's Major Nelson. "It may take a few mins for you to get the update, or for it to work properly. Once things get in order all should be fine."

Update #5: The update may take four hours to deploy. "Stimulus Package update: The Title Update is currently being prepped, but could take four hours to appear everywhere once it's read," Tweeted Daniel Maher, Xbox Live editor.

"Right now the team getting things in order so this will be fixed VERY soon (within hours)," added Nelson

Update #4: Major Nelson: "If you're getting 'Can't download the update' that's us putting the latest update in place. Excuse our dust, we'll be done ASAP."

Update #3: Hryb has offered another update: "I'll have another update in about 30-mins. Until then, you may see some weirdness if you try to download the map pack or update," he Tweeted.

Update #2: Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb's said the Stimulus Package wasn't released properly.

"The Stimulus Package needs a Title Update and it didn't go out properly. We're pushing it out now - it won't be long," he Tweeted.

Update #1: Major Nelson, the voice of Xbox Live (and Larry Hryb) has waded in. "The engineers are already engaged and working on the MW2 Stimulus Pack problem. They'll get it corrected," he tweeted, moments ago.

Original story: The Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package has been released on Xbox Live and does not work.

"Stimulus Package update: We're looking into why they aren't working, but we suspect a new title update is required and is due shortly," Tweeted Xbox Live editor Daniel Maher who, incidentally, has "no direct control over the content". "Messenger = shot," he added, in a later Tweet.

We'll keep our eyes peeled for any mention of a fix.

Inside the Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package are five extra maps. Three are brand-new and two return from Modern Warfare 1. They'll add "so much mileage" that "no one's going to be disappointed", according to Infinity Ward community man Robert Bowling.

The Stimulus Package costs 1200 Microsoft Points (£10.20/€14.40).

Head over to our full interview with Bowling to find out more.

Noone's going to be disappointed that this doesn't work, because if they'll spend a tenner on five new maps for a mediocre online FPS, they already have a screw loose.

As I don't particularly like Modern Warfare I've not really kept up with this DLC. Just noticed the price, though. That seems really steep for a map-pack, especially considering some of it is recycled content. That's Activision for you.
  • ecureuil #12 2 years ago

It seems that like the real-life stimulus packages, this was atrociously planned and ridiculously costly. Seriously, who in their right mind would pay over ten quid for five maps, when two of them aren't even original?

The Stimulus Package wasn't released properly?. Hey, just like MW2 for PC.

    It's called karma, bitches.
  • Murton #34 2 years ago

This sort of thing seems to happen far too often with these exclusive DLCs. You'd think that someone would do a real world test of the content to ensure that it can be downloaded and installed properly before it goes out to consumers, but evidently that's not the case.

I'm not sure what's actually worse here though, the fact that people willingly paid the equivalent of $15 for a map pack, or the fact that the map pack doesn't work.
  • Maledictus010 #35 2 years ago

MW2 was one of the best selling titles at the time (if not the best), the price was very high, it had it's share of problems, and now this. And still people buy and play this. So we get what we deserve. No matter how crappy the release, we buy it anyway. So things will only get worse from here on.

So this story gets 5 updates (so far) while something like 'Natal requires 13ft of space' never even gets an amendment.

Meanwhile players of Settlers 7 haven't been able to play their (full-priced) game for over a week, and don't even get a mention.

EG's writing is still head and shoulders above most gaming sites, but I'm starting to feel that it's trying to appeal to a different type of gamer than I. What happened to the interesting articles and news stories? They seem to have been passed off to freelance writers to be published at the weekend :(
  • Derblington #80 2 years ago

metalangel - I have paid for it. I'm sitting here waiting for it to sort itself out, but I also realise that it's not particularly easy releasing something this big no matter how much you plan for it, and the larger the user base the more likely that you'll hit stumbling blocks. You don't get bigger than MW2, and while I may have bought (not earned) the right to winge about it, I'd rather not because, at the end of the day, it's not really a big deal. It will get fixed, and then Ill play it, and soon enough we'll all forget this ever even occured.
  • darleysam #81 2 years ago

If I'm reading these comments correctly, Infinity Ward and Activision didn't actually do any of the work here. Did you know that Microsoft actually coded this update entirely? They ported and modelled the maps, tested them, did all the grunt work themselves. That's surely the reason we're angry at them for this, right?

Not because some people just love being inoperably stupid.
  • TheBoyChris #82 2 years ago

Got to wonder if this is MS's fault or ATVI's?
  • metalangel #83 2 years ago

@Derblington: Fair dos. I was considering getting it when I got home but fortunately the news broke before I finished work today. I do wonder how you can release something so totally broken and not notice... and don't think people haven't forgotten the great The Pitt debacle from this time last year either... ;)

    Good to know that...

    1. Everyone focussed their energies on identifying just who exactly we should all be so furious with, which was clearly the most important thing to be done.

    2. Everyone maximised their rage, so as to get the very most out of the few short hours during which this problem existed (which I guess was the second most important thing to be done).

Well done everyone. One step closer to that inevitable self inflicted stress-induced stroke.

Why do we need to aportion blame here - these releases must be really complex and no matter how much you test, something will likely pop up. Be thankfully that there is a great team behind to it that resolve it quickly. Doubt Sony would have reacted so quickly. All part of your paid service.

The cure for mapathy.... Battlefield Bad Company 2 woop woop
  • grantks #106 2 years ago

I'd first like to say that after Activisions behaviour of late I find this to be hilarious. However, the people commenting so far and praising Battlefield seem to be forgetting the problems that BF1943 had on XBLA when it launched on 360. I bought the game on release and it took days before I could even get a game, and the updates from DICE on what was happening were a joke (at least in the case of MW2 you are being kept informed). Also, many people keep saying that the DLC for BFBC2 is free, it is not. You already bought it by paying the incresed price of the VIP edition of the game. That is all.
  • coolbritannia #107 2 years ago

Except the vip edition of bad company is the same price as the standard. And £15 cheaper than MW2. Oh and 1943 was probably the best value for money online shooter ever with the same RRP as the stimulus package. A whole game versus 3 new maps. You picked a bad example to back up your point.
  • drewman5150 #108 2 years ago

@mukki what you do in the privacy of your own home is fine, but I don't think we need to know about the ps3 owner in you...and how he is smiling...
  • grantks #109 2 years ago

    @coolbritannia

"Except the vip edition of bad company is the same price as the standard. And £15 cheaper than MW2."

Really? I paid £26 for MW2 on the day of launch and £43 for BFBC2 VIP Edition which, incidently, was £3 more than the standard version. £3 is certainly cheaper than the £10 Activision are charging for the MW2 DLC but it is still extra cash I had to put down regardless.

"Oh and 1943 was probably the best value for money online shooter ever with the same RRP as the stimulus package."

I agree entirely. However, my point was that when it launched it was totally broken. The same way that the DLC for MW2 is right now.

"You picked a bad example to back up your point."

My point was that the comments on here seem to suggest that MW2 is the first game ever to have problems with its DLC when this is clearly not the case. I am not defending Activision as the DLC should have been extensively tested to ensure that it would work properly before it was released, just as BF1943 should have been. Please explain how the above is "a bad example to back up your point". That is all.
  • coolbritannia #110 2 years ago

@grantks, if you want to discuss supermarket pricing triggered by activisions greed go ahead, the fact remains that MW2 would have an artificially inflated price if left to activision. BC2LE is £5 cheaper than MW2 on the rrp price. Therefore £15 cheaper if like for like dlc is taken into account. There, you dragged me down to your level. Likewise, if you paid £43 for BC2 you're a mug, the limited edition was the same price as the standard in most places on and before launch, almost everywhere sub £40. And the comments thread isn't about dlc working or not, it's about greed being rewarded with failure. A fact you are well aware of, you're just a pedant.
  • grantks #111 2 years ago

    @coolbritannia

"BC2LE is £5 cheaper than MW2 on the rrp price." - "if you paid £43 for BC2 you're a mug"

You quote the rrp to backup your point of view, then insult me for paying the rrp? Hmmm.

"And the comments thread isn't about dlc working or not, it's about greed being rewarded with failure."

Really? Please read the title of the article, it's right there at the top of the page. That is all.
  • coolbritannia #112 2 years ago

Why don't you note which comments are the highest rated and why. No one really gives a shit about the maps as most have decided they are a complete rip off. We're just enjoying the karma of activision falling on their arse.

'You quote the rrp to backup your point of view, then insult me for paying the rrp? Hmmm. ' Yes, hence the dragged down to your level comment, straight after that. I hate semantics.
    Edited by coolbritannia at 31/03/10 @ 02:33
  • grantks #113 2 years ago

    @coolbritannia

"Why don't you note which comments are the highest rated and why."

If this is a question then why is there no question mark at the end of the sentence?

"No one really gives a shit about the maps as most have decided they are a complete rip off."

You speak for all of mankind do you? You need to resort to bad language do you? I would suggest that anyone who has downloaded the DLC cares quite a lot about the maps. Otherwise why would they have downloaded them in the first place?

"We're just enjoying the karma of activision falling on their arse."

As am I. By the way, Activision begins with a capital A.

    "I hate semantics."

By this I assume that you mean that you hate people pointing out glaring contradictions in your arguments? That is all.

  • Morph4471 #115 2 years ago

I am one of the 3947 signatures on the the hodsey77 colour blind patch petition, because I am colour blind I am unable to play most of the multiplayer games. However I do play free for all, so I bought the map pack last night to add the extra maps to my game, after 3 hours of free for all I still had'nt experienced one of my purchased maps, which led me to believe that they can only be played on the Stimulus titled option, It would have been nice; if this is the case, of IW seeing as they are ignoring the petition to have explained this whn talking up the new pack to save people wasting their money.
  • headrush #116 2 years ago

I guess the 1200 price tag is meant to refund this ridiculous mappathy ad campaign. If the map pack really was a service for the community it would be 400 points and not a multimillion advertising campaign.
  • mad-sirf #117 2 years ago

it has allways been like this(coD4, 5), the first weeks they are only playable over the new option, after a few weeks they will be on the normal lists toooooooo

but a really bad thing now is, you can't play them only on your prefered playlist like S&D or whatever, you have to play them an all different lists per random, i'm only playing S&D, all the other playlist i don't like , so thats really bullshit.
  • Dave52 #118 2 years ago

Maybe not a bad thing that us PS3 owners have to wait a month. Hopefully they can iron out any problems before the PSN release...

BFBC2 is by far a better game. the original MW was great but MW2 can suck the sweat from the crack of my arse. What do they think off when they come up with a 1200 MSPoints tag for 3 new maps and then still cant get that right. Too many glitchers, cheats , cocks and shouty wankers for my taste.

@geeza2020 - I was enjoying the fact that MS throw money at stuff for little benefit, then showing my working out by including a rather amusing little story about FF....

Seriously, do MS think that people are going to go out and buy an Xbox, and another copy of MW2, just so that they can play the DLC Maps 30 days quicker...? No. Everyone with a PS3 are like whatever... I personally think that it was rushed out, and they messed up.

@kangarootoo, it was late, i should have said i hate arguing over semantics to mask a larger issue that has been conceded. And it's Britannia, normally I wouldn't correct you, but ironylol.

so they had an exclusivity of one week, but the game patch to make it work was to be released accross all plateforms simultaneously after that week? Cute.
