Metroid: Other M dated

Samus Aran pinned down.

Wii exclusive Metroid: Other M will be released in Europe on 3rd September, Nintendo has confirmed.

The Team Ninja/Nintendo collaboration blends Ninja Gaiden-style gameplay with Metroid's well-known platforming and puzzle-solving.

You can switch from third-person to first-person views by changing the way you hold the Wii Remote.

And, of course, you can turn into a little ball.

The story begins immediately following the events of classic platforming shooter Super Metroid, when a baby Metroid gave its life to protect Samus. The game's got English voice acting and more than one hour of rendered cut-scenes.

Be sure to check out Eurogamer's hands-on of the game from February, but not before you have a gander at the gameplay trailer below.

    The Metroid games are among my favourite Nintendo games so I really do hope this is good but Team Ninja's involvement doesn't inspire great confidence because, IMO, the last great game they did was Ninja Gaiden Black on the Xbox and I haven't been particularly impressed with their Xbox 360 output particularly (DOA 4 was borderline OK I suppose if way too similar to the previous Xbox games)! Still, on the positive side at least this isn't another DOA or Ninja Gaiden game from them for a change and Nintendo presumably have ultimate control. Doesn't look *too* bad from the footage but looks can be deceptive...

    Much earlier then expected actually....

    I have to say I think that sub-heading is in pretty poor taste.

    Thought Eurogamer knew better than to buy in to that kind of adolescent male culture.

    @ TheApologist

    I initially thought the same thing but then I changed my opinion. Eurogamer has always been slightly risque, and provided it's funny (which it is to me) and it isn't tremendously explicitly sexist (I don't think it is), then we should be able to make slight concessions for taste to facilitate humour.

    yeah, its always been about terrible puns and innuendo! :)

    Really looking forward to this game - love the Metroid series. Wish something was done on the DS too though. Maybe the 3DS eh?

    "Maybe the 3DS eh? "

    At a minimum I'd expect 3D versions of the classic NES/SNES games.

    Converting old 2D games into pop-up book style 3D is amazingly easy.

    @Mini and Zulu

    Of course I accept the subjective nature of the judgement and I am far from a prude. Innuendo is great fun. But to me, that comment is in the context of a videogame culture which by and large finds it impossible not to unnecessarily sexualise female characters.

    Samus in the Prime trilogy was a notable exception. Looks like that's gone. I find that frustrating, and Eurogamer, with that kind of comment, is making matters worse not better.
  • wez_316 #11 2 years ago

    @TheApologist: I'd say that you were making things worse and not better by defending women personally. Do you think they can't they defend themselves? Men have jokes about women and women have jokes about men. It's all swings and roundabouts.

    Gaming is sexist towards men too... I mean look at the amount of musclebound freaks in games. We are always portrayed as killers as well... and not every man is a murderer you know! Some of us just clean the house and cook all day! Until Cooking Dada comes out I will not be happy about male positioning in games!

    I do agree with this. I acknowledge the nature of the context in which the comment has been said, but I think we shouldn't completely shun all gaming-related innuendo because of the said culture.

    By god, you lot read into things! :-) I didn't even notice the subtext.

    Thanks Nintendo, after Capcom threatened to spoil my birthday by delaying Dead Rising 2 you step in with the perfect birthday present!
  • Markitron #15 2 years ago

    So im still the only person that thinks nintendo are appeasing us with this. 2D is a step backwards after the magnificent Prime series, tho on a console so underpowered I can see why they are doing this.
  • MoGamer2006 #16 2 years ago

    @Markitron

    But it's not 2D, is it? And Wii > GC, which was the home of Metroid Prime... so no problems with horsepower, clearly.

    The change of direction is clearly a creative/management decision; whether you like it is a matter of your personal opinion.

    And do you actually know what 'appease' means, or how to use it in a sentence?
  • TheApologist #17 2 years ago

    @Wez

    Why are you assuming I'm male? ;)
  • Acrid #18 2 years ago

    @TheApologist

    Your Daily Mail reader attitude has no place on the internet please leave this place and never return, you are banished forthwith.

    If women want a more tasteful games industry, there should be more female game programmers and producers.
  • TheApologist #20 2 years ago

    @Acrid
    I am not saying you have to agree with me that the joke was sexist and tasteless, but for heaven's sake can we please distinguish between an allegation of sexism and an allegation of something being a bit rude? They are different.

    Sexism is an awful, de-humanising feature of our culture and particularly videogames, and being rude is by and large fun precisely because people who read the Daily Mail get pointlessly upset.

    For the avoidance of doubt, I am accusing Eurogamer of the former, and couldn't care in the least about the latter.

    PS @Mini I certainly agree with you that we shouldn't shun all innuendo in games - I just thought they got the tone of this one wrong.

    I can't really be bothered to read what you wrote so I'll just say /yawn and leave it at that.

    @Apologist: I assumed you were male because your name is Ian on your profile. If it's sexist to assume somebody is male because their name is Ian then call me sexist!

    What's this babbling about? It's just a little sub-heading. Calm the frakk down. Strap on a pair, for God's sake. Je-to the-sus.
