Lumines Live extras soon News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

19 January, 2007

Microsoft and Q Entertainment are taking over again next Xbox Live Wednesday to deliver a trio of content packs for Lumines Live.

What's more, each is being released under some sort of promotion, which means that one of them's free and the others will cost just 100 Microsoft points for a limited time - in stark contrast to the game itself, of course, which is among the most expensive on Live Arcade thanks to a 1200-point price-tag.

Anyway, starting 24th January you'll be able to get the Heavenly Star skin for free if you're an Xbox Live Gold member, allowing you to play Lumines with the Tetsuya Mizuguchi-produced Genki Rockets song pounding away against a new backdrop.

That's free for Gold users until 21st February, after which it will presumably cost. Meanwhile, the Vs. CPU and Puzzle/Mission packs will both start off at 100 MS points and then leap to 300 MS points on the same day the Heavenly Star deal expires.

The Vs. CPU pack promises a new skin and character designs - along, obviously, with a sequence of levels allowing you to play against CPU opponents in a version of the game's multiplayer mode - with a special skin to unlock at the end. The Puzzle/Mission pack will add 90 puzzles and 40 missions to the ten of each available for free in the main game release.

Previous downloadable content is still available, of course - so if you're after the Advance Pack, which changes things about (a bit) in the main Challenge mode, you can go and look for that right now. Otherwise, stay tuned for next Wednesday. Or, you know, just buy one of the PSP versions, which offer all this without the faffing.

200 points is reasonable enough! Just looking forward to some more great content! For some reason I haven't managed to cplete the Base pack, but I have done the Advanced one on Challenge mode! It's been great of value to me so far, my girlfriend and I have played Versus mode to death!

/gets comment in before the inevitable "What? I must buy these new packs... for money!"

Well, at least they're offering them cheaply. Having bought the base pack and advance pack I was going to give the rest of it a miss, but for a couple of hundred points I guess I can't really complain.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to be a total dick/troll/fanboy and point out that I got Lumines2 for the PSP for £15 brand new (as in, when it first came out)
And that already had the Heavenly Star (ecellent track BTW) skin included.

Still, the video on the 360 version probably wont suffer from the horrible compression artifacting that's on the PSP version, hopefully.

So no sign of music videos such as the Madonna one that was playing in the demonstration last year?

Promises, promises...no delivery, however...

Yessss. I know the pricing structure was debatable but I never owned a PSP and for me Lumines Live has been fantastic fun and good value for money too, +50 hrs total play time. 200 points for the rest of the game seems fair enough to me, can't wait !

thank god for that, i was disgusted and shocked when paying for the advance pack as i thought it was going to provide the rest of the game! couple of hundred points to unlock the rest is acceptable. oh, i still really like the game but 360s dpad can make it an annoying experience sometimes.

It has to be one of the best games on Live! at the moment - despite it's rather high costs, I think i've had value for money out of it so far...

question - just how long does Challenge mode Base last for? I still can't get through it from start to finish...

Lumines is probably the best Live Arcade game I've got, but it really makes me want another controller just to play it without breaking my thumb on the much too unresponsive D-Pad. Still, the whole matter about the price scheme and the supposedly high price of the game to me just hasn't got any sense: as far as I am concerned, the base + advanced pack was a bargain, considering how much time I've spent on Lumines.

I gave up on the d-pad early with Lumines, and while it's not 100% precise, the analogue stick works better for me.

Of course, whether you play Lumines on 360 or PSP, you're stuck with a sucky d-pad. :(

Lumines Live, especially in light of the disappointing Lumines 2 (featuring roughly the same content too! Except the awful licensed garbage) is indeed a bargain. Add to that online leaderboards and multiplayer you're actually likely to play with someone and it's great.
