FreeStyle happier with DJ Hero 2 price

Was "quite vocal" about original cost.

DJ Hero 2 developer FreeStyle Games has told Eurogamer TV that it is much happier with the pricing for its second turntable music game.

The original DJ Hero was sold for £100 in the UK, and FreeStyle studio manager Kevin McSherry indicated he wasn't impressed by the premium price tag.

"Well, FreeStyle Games have been quite vocal in our feedback on that," he told EGTV in an interview you can watch below.

"And there's some fantastic news on pricing actually - the whole game this time around is about two turntables and a microphone, and Activision have worked with us to produce a fantastic party pack.

"It basically has the two turntables, the microphone and the game for $149. That's miles away from where we were last year."

Last time around the game was critically acclaimed, scoring 8/10 on Eurogamer but that didn't translate into sales immediately. The game has since been discounted and Activision recently claimed sales were at 1.2 million "and counting".

This year Activision and FreeStyle hope for both critical and commercial success, and you can read about their progress in our DJ Hero 2 preview.

McSherry also said that there would be only "minor" changes to the turntable peripheral for the sequel.

"We always make minor iterative improvements as you go along with a piece of hardware like this, and that work is going on in the background," he told EGTV.

"But as far as gameplay is concerned it's exactly the same, so if you own DJ Hero 1 turntable it will work brilliantly on DJ Hero 2 and vice versa."

Kevin McSherry talks price, hardware and singing.

How much was the first game (in $)?

Only Activision could ever think that charging the price of a 360 for some accessories is good value. ONLY Activision.

So he's happier that it's now more expensive?

What if you want to play it alone? I'm not intending to hold massive DJ Hero parties...

Minor turntable changes? Presumably that means they fixed the issue with phantom button presses. I'll probably pick up the second game to get some more use out of my turntable, although maybe not straight away.

Don't worry, there's several bundles.. Two turntables and a microphone is just the big one.

Problem is that the turntables only work for this one game. I'm still using my old Guitar Hero 3 controller with Rock Band 2 (and 3 in the future). I don't want to buy a plastic toy that only works with one game, it just makes no sense.

£100 last year, and $149 this year?

"That's miles away from where we were last year."

Umm... Current exchange rates say 100.00 GBP = 151.536 USD. He's $1.37 away from last year. Yes, I do understand that it's now two turntables and a mic, but I think the core problem for players was that they weren't sure the game was good enough to justify £100, not necessarily the things that came in the box.

actually the party pack is the same as the renegade pack from last year.
I think the renegade pack was $200 so it's $50 cheaper (from memory).
You can also buy it with just the turntable or just the game itself if you already have one!

Hopefully the entire game wont be skewed to party play as my wife and i enjoyed single player just fine.

Scottycam - im fine with buying the turntable if it works with this SERIES of games. Which it does, he said so. When you bought the first guitar hero game did you complain that it didnt work with other guitar games that, er, didnt exist at that point?

Doctor-What : presumably players should now be aware that the game IS good enough to warrant a purchase.

turntables work with all the dj hero games, no matter which one you buy :-)
  • IronGiant #14 2 years ago

Common sense says wait a few months and this will also be heavily discounted :)

@Jackface - Good for you, your happy with it working with this series of games. My point was that the guitar's work with more than one series of games (Rock band and guitar hero, probably a few lesser know ones too). I'm not convinced that a plastic turntable will be as versatile and we'll be playing with them years in the future. Digging out my turntable for a month each year when they release a new DJ Hero games doesn't seem worth it. Its not like they have released regular track packs to support the game like rock band and guitar hero have done either.

I'm confused, is the second turn table for 1 player games (i.e. 2 records like a real DJ) or is it for 2 player battles/bands?

If it's the former - then how will the original single DJH 1 turntable be compatable? - is it simply dumbed down?
