First Singularity details materialise News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

14 January, 2009

Activision has released the first details of sci-fi shooter Singularity.

The PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 game will be set on a mysterious island occupied by Russians during the Cold War, according to the February Game Informer teaser. And it's here that a US pilot uncovers the terrible secrets behind the element E99 tests of the 1950s.

We've no idea what they are, but the central theme involves using time as an aid and a weapon. Apparently enemies can be rapidly aged and decomposed on the spot.

Raven Software of Quake 4 and Wolfenstein credit will be creating Singularity, and use the Unreal Engine 3 to save some time.

Activision unveiled the shooter back at E3 with a trailer but offered little else.

More soon, we hope.

hmm trailer (which I hadn't looked at before) and premise make me think of a Russian version of the Philadelphia Experiment:

Must say I find it very hard to get excited by a FPS not made by Valve or Bungie and to a lesser extent Infinity Ward.

"and use the Unreal Engine 3 to save some time"

This statement has urinated liberally over the embers of any interest I may have had. Acrid steam ensues.

Kind of looks like it is trying to emulate Bioshock.

Here comes another FPS! Same as the old FPS.

Seriously, I'm going back to play Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle until these people can think of an original concept.

More importantly, Raven made the superb Soldier of Fortune (1 & 2) and Jedi Knight 2 games.

I'd probably sacrifice a digit to have DotT in HD on XBLA.

Well, I'd buy it at the very least..

With Raven involved it should at least be competent and hopefully not another Timeshift.

Agreed, a HD update of Grim Fandango would also be a beautiful addition.

I'm getting quite tired of the Unreal 3 engine and the way it looks. I wish people would support some other engines a bit more, its technically very good sure, but I just don't really like the way it looks. Maybe that's just me?

Mirror's Edge and Mass Effect don't have that look. Depends on the developer.

Forgot about Mass Effect and never even knew about Mirrors Edge using the Unreal Engine.
A perfect example of my lack of knowledge in regard to engine use, I really should try not to push my nose in to area's where the detail I know is slim to none. Mind you then I'd never get to argue about anything at all eh?

No doubt this will get slagged off for 'ripping off' EG's favourite whinging developer Mr J. Blow and Braid? Mr Blow will give his comments live from his Uncle Scrooge-style Money Bin, filled with all the money that evil Microsoft forced him into accepting.
