EDGE returns triumphant to App Store News

iPhone News by Robert Purchese

7 October, 2009

Mobigame's EDGE has returned to the App Store after a long and well documented legal battle with Tim Langdell.

There's no explanation given on the product page, just the £2.99 asking price and a description of the game. There's a Lite version too, should you wish to try before you buy.

Maybe EA's petition to have Langdell's EDGE trademark abolished was successful.

Also on the App Store, from Friday, will be Charles Cecils' iPhone adaptation of point-and-click adventure Beneath A Steel Sky. This will cost £2.99 and pack numerous extras, as our keen coverage has pointed out.

About time! I just wish that Langdell will be forced to compensate them for lost earnings.

Ding dong the witch is dead!

I've had the demo for ages, loved it and glad I'll finally get the chance to play it in it's entirety.

Great to see Edge back on the store. If you haven't picked it up yet I would recommended it - it is only a few quid! Just about to get BASS as it is available now.

You know if you'd emailed them like I did you'd have had a far more fact-based news story to post here. Mr Papazian replied to me within the hour, explaining that:

- they hadn't buckled to Langdell
- there would be an official press release soon
- the apparent name change from 'Edge' to 'Edge by Mobigame' was deliberate
- Apple agree there is no legal risk for them in the US now
- recent events (EA) had helped convince Apple and they hope it will last

Here to help.

Well not Rob Purchese, obviously. I only emailed them out of gratitude that it was back, to pledge my support and to ask what had prompted the turnaround at Apple.

I hope you contacted Langdell to agreed the use of Edge in that comment - I wouldn't want him sending EG a cease-and-desist request...

Yes, BASS is very much worth it. Among the best point and clicks and its world is a fairly serious and slightly dark one. The puzzles and story are top notch.

Wouldn't say no - got Bourbons? Never really understood the affection for Jaffa Cakes - bit dry and anti-climactic.

I hope the £10 I donated to the legal fund gets refunded though if the case doesn't go to court. Because that would be rather unfair if it wasn't.

Well they certainly got a lot of publicity out of the trademark caper, before I had never heard of it, now I am more likely to buy it. Well played.

For those of you that already own Edge, you'll notice an update for it if you visit the App Store on your iPhone. Check the details on the 'update' and you'll see that it simply lists 'bug fixed' - nothing else, no more detail. A subtle prod at Langdell, I suspect...

Wow check out all of those negative scores.

I said it would amuse me, not that I wanted them to pay him. It would amuse me because they are getting all of this kudos for 'sticking it' to 'the man', yet they didn't make any kind of official announcement as to how. As vocal as they have been in the press it is a little curious as to why they didnt shout from the rooftops that EDGE is back up.

Sigh. I only meant this story to be a heads-up that the game was back on the store.

- they hadn't buckled to Langdell
- there would be an official press release soon
- the apparent name change from 'Edge' to 'Edge by Mobigame' was deliberate
- Apple agree there is no legal risk for them in the US now

Cool. I'll see what that press release says.

Oh by the way, BASS is out now.

Good news. Press release was wrong then. Admittedly I should have checked, but was busy and didn't see the need. Well done for spotting it.

Worst. News story. Ever.

That's informed a lot of people that EDGE and BASS are on the App Store to buy. You should start your own blog.

Come on Rob, "Admittedly I should have checked, but was busy and didn't see the need" - the past coverage of this saga on this site screams the need for more than just a wee note saying the game is back on.

Jaffa Cakes are not biscuits.

Anyway, I really hope Langdell loses all rights to the "Edge" trademark and then gets sued by everyone he's ever threatened with legal action.
