DC Universe Online Hands On

MMO PC PlayStation 3 Hands On by Ellie Gibson

6 August, 2008

Page 3 of 3. <- Page 2

By way of a compromise you can pick a pre-built character who comes equipped with the same set of abilities as your favourite superhero, rather than trying to recreate them from scratch. "You could choose the Superman-type character who can pick up and throw cars, or the character who's filled out with Batman-type abilities - martial arts, acrobatics, gadgets. Then you customise your own appearance," says Cao.

Appearance is key, apparently. There's an "immense array" of costume options to choose from, all designed by veteran comic book artist Jim Lee and his team. "But they focused on things that make you look cool at a distance. It's less about your eyebrow shape and more about your silhouette, your brand."

Regardless of what you start out with, you're not stuck fulfilling a particular role for the entire game. You choose four reactive and four active powers to fight with from the range at your disposal, and can change them around at will. "So if we're in a dungeon and we need a tank, you can take on different abilities and assume that role. But you're still an ice person," Cao explains. "It's like golf - you have a bundle of clubs to choose from, but you can only bring four out to play on the green."

Time to go out on the green, then. Cao explains that to choose from the four active abilities you hold down R2 and press one of the mapped shape buttons; targeting is done with L2. Basic moves, such as light attacks and throws, are also pulled off using the face buttons. As a console player, it all feels familiar and easy. It's not long before I'm encasing characters in blocks of ice, picking them up and chucking them at enemies without any trouble. On the PC, it's WASD to move and the mouse to look, while the numerical keys are used for special abilities.

I want a job where you have to wear a cape.

H aving got to grips with the controls and my character's special moves, I'm able to start helping out the likes of Supergirl, who is taking on Lex Luthor. I manage to encase him in ice, and she takes the opportunity to give him a good kicking. Some more player characters join in and Lex is quickly outnumbered and overwhelmed. I needn't worry about sharing XP, explains Cao, as DC Universe uses what they're calling a "surplus model". XP isn't divided amongst the players who defeat an enemy; they all get as least as many points as if they'd done the job on their own. In fact, the more players team up, the more XP they earn.

"We wanted to make sure people are encouraged to play with each other," says Cao. "It's a physics-based environment, where you could throw something and accidentally hit something that someone else is beating up. So you have to share a lot more. Plus, it's more fun that way too." Of course, heroes and villains don't share XP with each other, so there's plenty of potential to rain on your rivals' parade.

Because XP is shared rather than split, there's no need to create a formal group to carry out actions with other players. But there is the option to - you might decide to patrol the streets or explore a dungeon as a group of four, for example, or go on a raid with 16, 20 or 24 others. You can also create your own heroes' or villains' guild - known as leagues and legions, respectively - with the goal of saving or ruling the world.

'DC Universe Online' Screenshot 5

It's still too soon, apparently.

But for the purposes of this demo, I'm limited to soft grouping and exploring the five blocks of Metropolis SOE has opened up. Limited is the word; after 20 minutes or so I've worked out what all my powers do and seen Lex Luthor respawn twice. Defeating waves of the same enemies within the same confined space is starting to feel an awful lot like grinding. This area makes up less than one per cent of one city in the game, though.

Which means there are still important questions for SOE to answer. At this stage, it's clear the control system works, but still needs work - particularly with reference to flying on the PS3. It's hard to evaluate how the superpowers will balance out without having been able to create a character and see what happens when you mix up different abilities. As for whether console gamers want to play MMOs at all - that question may not be answered until after DC Universe Online hits the shops, but perhaps SOE is about to change some minds.

The flying sounds like potential catatrophe... it says the camera is controlled by the right stick, so if you have inverse look on, will you look down as you fly upwards? I would rather fly in the direction that the character is looking in, or perhaps have a Warhawk-esque hovver on/fly on mode switch.

Mmmm, not so good then?

The biggest problem is that most players will want to be the iconic superhero and not some generic wannabe and not sure if console owners used the quick thrill of console games will be willing to put in the hours to level up the characters

I'm glad though, I don't care if everyone wants to be Batman. I was reading up about Star Wars online and how it was alright until they decided to patch it so it was easy for everyone to be Jedi.

Except I won't, because Superman will probably just ask me to go and kill ten super-powered rat-people, just like every other fucking MMO.

I liked the fact that when you get to a certain level then you get the potential of fighting along with bats or whoever.

Shame my PC sucks, and i dont have a PS3.

I never want to play as Superman or Spiderman, i want to be 'The Funky Monk' or 'Biscuitman'... much more fun.

Hell, i was Paul Daniels in CoH, teleporting up to random PCs saying 'That's Magic!' and teleporting away again.

me = easily pleased.

I don't think there's so much fun to be found in being the established superhero. You already know because of comic-book convention, or familiarity with the character, the sort of things you'll be facing. But if you build your own character from scratch, you get to guide the development, create your own saga.

Warhawk's flying mechanism is pretty much perfect. I hope they adopt the same for this because from the DCU preview the flying sounded crap and likely to alienate a lot of potential players.

The fanboy in me wants to hurt you, but unfortunately you speak the truth. There is clear daylight between Marvel and DC in terms of quality of stories at the moment.

johnnybrn, as Edge explained in this month's magazine, the game's about building your own legends, so if you want to 'be' the heroes then there are plenty of other games to satisfy that need.

Additionally, your question regarding the appropriateness of the game for console gamers could also be leveled at Halo Wars. In short, your "not good then" remark jumping the gun.

Oh, and other than Batman, DC isn' comparable to Marvel... :p

MS 'F'ed up big cancelling that project.

That won't change anything, DC would still have super-ponce and a bunch of other lame arse characters.

And Grant Morrison isn't shit, just insane. He needs to be kept in check or he goes mental (see: The Invisibles), but in short bursts he can be amazing (see: Animal Man).

On one condition; There's no monthly fee...Which is doubtful; So chances are I won't be getting this.
But I do want it.
Flying on PC sounds fun =] Looks better than CoH flying.

@Pearl of anguish

The characters aren't the problem. The stories are. It is more than possible to make good stories involving Superman. As a matter of fact, I actually prefer DC's superheroes, but nothing DC has produced in the last 3-4 years comes close to Ironman, Thor, any of the Avengers books, Ms Marvel, even Spiderman (now that I am getting used to 'Brand new day', Iron Fist, Secret Invasion and a few others.

Captain America is shit, though. So is Daredevil.

See, this is why developers should keep things behind closed doors until they're nearer to release. Like in the good old days, before the internet and...um...electricity and stuff.

Slagging the demo off for not giving you a big enough playing area, when the developers have been good enough to actually produce a demo for Comic Con, seems to be missing the point entirely. This was in no way representative of the finished article, and just serves as a teaser more than anything. A three page preview on a pre alpha demo at a comics exhibition seems somewhat over the top.

Champions Online == City of Heroes 2. Unless you get to build powers using the Hero/Champions system. RKA FTW!

DC Online sounds more interesting. As for Marvel... well, pester Microsoft to restart the project, then. At the moment Marvel Online is dead. And not in the "Death of Superman" sense either.

There should only be one Superman, one Batman etc. But they shouldn't be glorified NPCs. They need to feel like real life characters - get the devs to take control of them, give them an agenda and a 'life' that the player might/can be able to interact with.

I don't get why one stick doesn't do flight steering in X and Y and the other does looking with a button for "go" and X for "go more". Or is that too basically sensible? When are you not going to want to either hover or be going as fast as possible?
