Activision tired of Scrooge image?

Activision is offering a free copy of Guitar Hero: Van Halen to anyone pre-ordering Guitar Hero 5.

There is some small print. This is a limited-time offer supported locally by only Play.com and Amazon.co.uk. And the GH5 website links go only to Xbox 360 guitar-plus-game bundles.

Weirdly, neither retailer mentions the deal.

Guitar Hero: Van Halen won't be out in Europe until next year, although North Americans can buy the game three days before Christmas. But will there be any shelf space next to Turbo Man?

This offer is in stark contrast to recent pricing strategies by Activision, which have seen the SRP of Modern Warfare upped to Ł55, and copies of DJ Hero-plus-turntable or Tony Hawk-plus-skateboard costing over Ł100.

I wouldn't play it if the Activision CEO came round my house with a free copy. It's all about Rock Band: The Beatles. Get stuffed Activision.

Could be that pre-orders of Van Halen are low. Or Activision just really want to push GH5, as sales of GH have been dropping off recently.

I think they probably don't mind giving away discs for free, it's the plastic peripherals that have the massive margin.

More GH games out there = more people buying peripherals

Is it confirmed that this deal includes Europe? The pre-order page does have links to amazon.co.uk and play.com but as the article says the sites themselves have no mention of this deal and if you read the offer details it says "Good only in USA."

Maybe I'm being paranoid but some confirmation from somewhere would be nice.

Maybe it's because no one really gives a fuck about Van Halen, and most of the single artist Rock Band & Guitar Hero titles have died a rather ugly death.

Yeah, you get it free only if you buy Guitar Hero 5 with the guitar. I mean if you've got the previous titles you are already bound to have a guitar. If you just bought the game for €51.99 rather than forking out the €90.99 for the one with guitar you are better off. I know, €51.99 for a game, just makes you be more careful about what ones you get.

GH 5 will probably be the first GH game I dont buy. Dont like the look of the playlist at all. And have no interest in GH:VH either - always thought they were a strange choice for a GH game.
