Bungie reveals Halo project trailer News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

25 September, 2008

Bungie has ended our waiting and released a teaser trailer for a Halo 3 project.

The footage shows pods crashing down into a ruined city from space, witnessed through the digital vision of a robot. Or helmet.

The computer screen then blips to the phrases from the countdown site earlier, with "please stay calm" and "keep it clean" standing out. Perhaps these are commands for robot behaviour, or ways to keep panicked city dwellers in line during emergencies. Is this the mysterious Superintendent character? Or perhaps a brand of robot?

The trailer finishes with the slogan "prepare to drop", before the Halo 3 and Bungie logos flash up.

The project could be more environments or an expansion of sorts for Halo 3; a new setting for a new hero. Maybe a prequel to everything. In short, we have no idea.

Head over to Eurogamer TV now to see what the fuss is all about.

Come on, EG, don't you know someone at Bungie who can tell you WTF that is? It looks like a halo3 expansion pack, which is a bit underwhelming.

It's something to do with the Halo universe: New Mombasa is mentioned, Cars look familiar, there is a Covenant ship flying around, and that blue explosion sure looks familiar(think Halo 2).

So this is Halo 3-2? Fuck that, I wanted Halo 4! I don't know if this is a sequel or a spin-off or what? it must be a spin off because its not got the number "4" after it?

I don't think it's an "expansion", more of a side project - I still think it'll be a squad-based game, or maybe from the Covenant POV, set during the invasion in Halo 2 or 3.

Talk of a sequel was always, I feel, wildly optimistic. I think Halo 4 (or, rather, "The Further Adventures of Master Chief") will be a New Xbox launch title.

The best thing about this announcement is how funny it is reading about everyone's disappointment.

After all the hype you would've thought it would have been more than a fucking expansion.

The trailer is already available in the XBL marketplace, and the description text next to the trailer says it's "a brand new halo3 campaign". Expansion pack it is, then.

So Halo 1 era, in Halo 3 engine.

That makes you a rather pathetic individual then doesnt it?

"After all the hype you would've thought it would have been more than a fucking expansion."

After one failed attempt to launch and one teaser page. You call that hype?

Grow up children, it's just a game teaser, not your granny getting raped by the ghost of Saddam, so no need for temper tantrums even though it's 'cool' to hate Bungie like they shat in your puppies eyesockets after gouging them out with rusty meathooks.

That actually uplifts me after realising how dumb Bungie are for

a) the shitstorm that's going to hit when the Maddie comment in the trailer gets found out by the press.

b) hyping this guff.

How about a game about the downfall of the Forerunners, set thousands of years before the first game? The name "Superintendent" is consistent with the sort of nomenclature you saw in the terminals in Halo 3 and heard from Forerunner constructs like the monitors.

However, I just watched the trailer once, no doubt many people on the internet are scrutinizing it frame by frame and will come up with better theories.

Edit: Niteninja posted while I was typing this... I'm not just stealing his idea ;)

I never even noticed that "Maddie" thing. Don't even think I'd have made the connection till it was pointed out, either.

It won't be a shitstorm - unless Maddie does turn out to be a little blond girl, or something. I imagine it's a coincidence.

Xbox Live Marketplace offers the following clarification: "High action and deep mystery await players in this new Halo 3 campaign experience. Prepare to drop!"

The video ends with a mention of Halo 3--which hit Xbox 360 exactly one year ago today--along with the phrase "Prepare to Drop." It also hints at something occurring on 01/06/09.

I have a feeling this may be a spin-off that follows the events of a human or group of humans through the Halo 3 campaign. Maybe even focusing on a character such as sergeant Johnson

To be honest, it's probably based on squaddies on earth during halo 2, you know, at the point where master chef (yes, I said chef) left earth and the game took a monumental drop in quality, and when people asked "WHY THE HELL I'VE I LEFT EARTH?"

Although H3 was based on earth, it was mostly dead outskirts, not the urban warefare against aliens we were all hoping (which is how halo 2 started). So what better why to deal with the situation?

If it is based on halo 3 settings, then it's probably set in another location, in a city (new mombasa) when the covenants have returned (the story will run parallel with chief and the others in the desert).
