BioShock gets limited edition

Petition forces 2K's hand.

Earlier this week the official BioShock site promised us a limited edition of the game if more than 5,000 of you signed a petition.

Well, more than 14,000 rose to challenge in just over five hours, earning us a snazzy collector's box for Xbox 360 and PC.

Now the official website's up to it again, and wants to know what you'd like to see in the limited edition. Simply pop over there and enter the poll to get your favourite bits and pieces included.

Earlier this month the same destination confirmed that BioShock would be arriving on European shelves on 24th August, on both Xbox 360 and PC, which made us run around like lunatics and bump into things.

We've also recently been treated to a couple of fancy new trailers for the game, both perfectly dark and disturbing. You can settle yourself in our EGTV cinema to have a butcher's at those.

BioShock is in development at Irrational Games, and tells the story of a city under the ocean, originally created by scientists to be the perfect civilisation. You'll stumble on this lost slice of art deco-inspired paradise after your plane crashes into the sea, and soon discover that things went horribly wrong.

It looks fantastic, and we recently sat down with Irrational boss Ken Levine for a little one-on-one. You can find out what he had to say in our BioShock interview, which is elsewhere on our knowledgeable hub of gaming.

    1950s paradise, actually
  • AcidSnake #2 5 years ago

    Nice to see this....
Developers staying in touch with their audience...

I can't believe the 'big daddy' figurine is getting the most votes. I'd like something interesting like an artbook or making of dvd, not some useless action figure...
  • captbirdseye #4 5 years ago

    Big Daddy action figure FTUW.
  • bigbadbeasty #5 5 years ago

No many people watch the DVD's though
  • Machiavel #6 5 years ago

Um, £5 cheaper than the regular edition?
  • Inquisitor #7 5 years ago

What am I gonna do with an action figure, put it on my desk like a retard? I mean, seriously, this is an adult game right, what do these supposed adults want with what will presumably be a diecast model.

At least an artbook is genuniely interesting and the making of dvds are so good to watch once you've completed the game, really make you appreciate the game so much more on the second playthrough.

I've never understood why people who are past puberty buy "action figures" to mount on their desks/monitors/consoles/car dashboards... what's the point?!!!
  • Killerbee #10 5 years ago

    soundtrack ftw

    +1
  • Zeburaman #11 5 years ago

how about an enhanced ss 1 + 2 on xbox live arcade instead pleease.
  • Darkedge #12 5 years ago

    1950's? no 1930's.

I'd like an Art book please, since the style is so good and the concept art must be fantastic
  • Inquisitor #13 5 years ago

That'd be great actually, including SS 1 and 2 on a bonus disk, I mean, the limited edition of doom 3 on the xbox included the past incarnations of doom on a bonus disk.
  • Xerx3s #14 5 years ago

I want an hardcover artbook like they did with GoW, that really rocked.
  • mattigan #15 5 years ago

God of War style "IN GAME" unlockables. You know "Proper" extras/featurettes, please not concept art, that's a cop out.
  • SBfistfun #16 5 years ago

Only one reason I can think of...

This is good, more developers should do things like this.
  • asphaltcowboy #18 5 years ago

Whilst a Big Daddy figure might be cool... I personally would prefer a really nicely made artbook. I can't help thinking that including a figure will massively increase the price compared to something like the soundtrack or artbook... Personally I like it when special editions are around £5 more than their normal edition counterparts...

EDIT: Spartan helmet... quite cool... £60/70? No thanks.

Tough choice. Are they only going to pick one of those things?
  • ZuluHero #20 5 years ago

well i picked "art book" - not like its gonna make a difference with the stupid amount of votes for the "big daddy" action figure.

For once a developer listen to their audience and it goes balls up. Go figure :/

EDIT: i'd pick the soundtrack 2nd though :)

the art style on this game is excellent so i would like an artbook and a nice metal case
  • morriss #22 5 years ago

    Big Daddy Action Figure, yes.
  • Kazzahdrane #23 5 years ago

I picked the Big Daddy model, and I not a weirdo!

I thought about the Art Book, but assumed that it might be a bit crap like some of the ones you get with games. A really nice Big Daddy model would probably tempt me to get the special edition.

Just need to decide what format I'm buying it on now....achievements vs. slightly nicer graphics and keyboard+mouse on my PC....
  • sharpfish #24 5 years ago

man.. I just don't know wether to get it for my 360 or my (by then) uber pc...

    PC = mouse/wasd and better gfx (gf9?)
Xbox = comfy, rumble, hdtv/large screen

too hard to chose... no wait, the mouse/keyboard control has got to win, even better it shoudl tie in with my gamertag acheivements with the new pc live stuff.
  • skillian #25 5 years ago

Connect your PC to your HDTV and you get the best of both worlds!
  • dryden555 #26 5 years ago

A revamped system shock would be great but they dont own the rights to do that. EA owns it. I think they even pitched the idea of a proper sequel to EA, but EA said no thanks.
  • dryden555 #27 5 years ago

one more thing -- all of the previews have the developers specifically calling it a "shooter" and they dont talk about the game being an "RPG." So if we are looking forward to an action RPG we might be disappointed. I suspect they are keeping the game simpler for the consoles.
  • Freek #28 5 years ago

Woah woah, woah, wait. An internet petition actually worked? An internet petition ABOUT A GAME actually worked? o_0

"I can't believe the 'big daddy' figurine is getting the most votes. I'd like something interesting like an artbook or making of dvd, not some useless action figure... "

Big Daddy was the first thing I thought of, it's the obvious icon for the game.
  • bonker #30 5 years ago

Not sure why some are talking about 1930/50s here but the style is Art Deco so 1930s!
  • FunkyRenegade #31 5 years ago

Glad to say I was one of the signers ^^
I voted Big Daddy figurine, come on, that would be so cool, but I'd love and Art Book and "Making of" DVD too. Oh decisions!
  • TheJanitor #32 5 years ago

big daddy figurine, without a doubt.
  • Inquisitor #33 5 years ago

How old are you lot, seriously, a figurine, what possible purpose could that serve?

Displaying it just makes you look like a huge geek.
  • asphaltcowboy #34 5 years ago

For us game developers new to the industry, it'll help us blend in! ;)
  • PearOfAnguish #35 5 years ago

You do realise you're on a gaming web site, right? It's not like playing games is the coolest hobby around.
  • Inquisitor #36 5 years ago

Yea of course I do, but I don't need to advertise to the world what a geek I am. To be honest it would embarrass me to have something like that displayed, but then maybe its because I don't really have any friends who are geeks so I tend to pretty much keep my love of gaming confined to this site. Don't really talk about it to my friends at all.

    @Inquisitor

/Invites Inquisitor to lie on couch

Hmm sounds like you may have issues with announcing who you really are. I'm sure people will understand about your being "different". It's time to come out and say who you are.

Stand up and say it loud "I'm geek and I'm proud"

Acceptance of your orientation in life will lead to enlightenment and self well being.

  • thefilthandthefury #38 5 years ago

All shit to be honest. I absolutely hate art books and bonus DVDs, what a waste. The figurine is a nice bonus I suppose... best on the list anyway, but it wouldn't make me shell out more.
  • Inquisitor #39 5 years ago

I'm fine with who I am, my mates know I like gaming so if they're after a game or a bit of technology they'll come to me for advice. Its just I know they don't want to talk about it that much and why should I advertise my interests more than necessary? Plus a figurine, just silly imo.
  • UncleLou #40 5 years ago

An action figurine? Christ. Useless junk.
  • newt #41 5 years ago

    Um, decoration?
  • mike_mgoblue #42 5 years ago

Great third-party exclusive games are what make me SO HAPPY about the success of the Xbox 360 being such a great and fun game system!
  • ZuluHero #43 5 years ago

Haven't ppl learned from past "cool" figurines that you get in limited edition games that its just gonna be some shitty cheap plastic thing about 6" tall and thats badly painted? Its not like its gonna be a Mcfarlane Toy or anything. The devs must be laughing at this one, slap another fiver or tenner on it for something that will cost them 5p to make.

Well you guys have made my decision not to buy a CE edition for me. Thanks for saving me some money guys! :)

On saying that though, if the figure did turn out to be properly done and looked really cool and dynamic i will get it. Im just going on past experiences and i didn't want you all to think i was a whiny, throws all his toys from the pram poster, cos i didn't get my own way. Again. ;)

I've bought very poor special editions, and I've bought nice ones.
Jade Empire's SE is really, really bad. Halo 2 and Oblivion's are nice, for example.

I'm going to give this one's a chance.

What's so terrible about figures? I collect models, and last I checked I'm an adult, albiet a nerdy one.

That said, I voted artbook. It always upsets me to watch all these PS2 RPGs like Disgaea getting released in the US and UK with artbooks if you preorder, but being denied it just because I live in Australia. Wheras we always get LE stuff for Xbox / 360 here.
