Metal Gear Solid 5 expected between April 2013 and May 2014

Japanese investment firm targets fiscal 2014 for big release.

Metal Gear Solid 5 - the game Hideo Kojima expects he'll have to make - will launch at some point during publisher Konami's fiscal 2014, according to a Japanese investment analyst company.

Nomura Securities (via Nihon Securities Journal, Andriasang) expects Konami to release Metal Gear Solid 5 at some point between the beginning of April 2013 and the end of May 2014.

In its report, Nomura raised its expected fiscal 2013 operating earnings for Konami by 24 per cent, and raised its outlook from neutral to buy, enthused by the performance of Konami's social games.

For fiscal 2014, Nomura expects operating earnings to rise 15 per cent - fuelled by Metal Gear Solid 5.

Late last year Kojima revealed some of his ideas for the yet to be made Metal Gear Solid 5 - one of which was to set the game in the invasion of Normandy.

The Japanese game designer pitched the idea to his Kojima Productions staff as he was working on another unannounced game - presumably Project Ogre.

"Metal Gear Solid 4 wrapped up in 2008, and the dev team took post-project time off right after that," Kojima revealed. "But, of course, we were in a situation where we had to start planning for MGS5. So I started coming up with several ideas.

"I had several ideas for a game featuring The Boss and the Cobra Unit during the invasion of Normandy. I then handed these plans over to the team so they could take over and make the game.

"I presented my ideas to the team during the summer of 2008. However, simply dropping MGS5 on the younger staff members was a bit heavy and there was resistance to doing it without my involvement."

According to Metal Gear Solid lore, The Boss was the mentor of Naked Snake and the founding leader of the Cobra Unit, which was disbanded at the end of World War 2.

It was after Kojima made his MGS5 pitch that the idea of creating a spin-off - Metal Gear Solid: Rising, now Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - emerged.

"At the time, I was working on a new project. It was during the planning phase of that project and I wanted the staff to take charge of the new title," Kojima continued.

"There was resistance to that idea, though. It was then that someone proposed the idea for what would become Rising. It was a game based on Raiden's story, since MGS5 had too much weight to it. It would be a side story that the team felt more comfortable working with."

Kojima has said on his Twitter page that a stealth-based Metal Gear Solid sequel - presumably Metal Gear Solid 5 - will one day release.

His comments came after the reveal of the rebooted Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, now developed by Bayonetta studio Platinum - not Kojima Productions - and re-imagined with a heavy action gameplay focus.

"For those of you desire for authentic stealth MGS, I want you to patiently wait for the sequel coming in future," he said.

I hope they'll go with a full-fledged online mode, MGO was awesome.

It's nice of them to consider making another game, seeing as they don't owe us anything, very kind of them.
  • Frybird #4 3 months ago

Hopefully it's a "we're going for a story both tacky and clever, along with cool new gameplay" MGS3 and not a "we like to screw with gamers expectations and mock them in a very post-modern way" MGS2

Just hope its not a November release, it will hurt my wallet and I expect to get a 720 or wiiu next year.

I love the idea of a WW2 stealth mgs set in Normandy, bolt-action rifles, early smgs, pill boxes, giant tanks! Already can't wait even imagining it!

It pains me to say it but Kojima has failed to deliver on this generation's consoles: he has done too few, and he took to much time to do it.
On PS3/Xbox we have seen the blossoming of trilogies of the caliber of Uncharted, Gears of War, Mass Effect but just one MGS: all those games had a lot of quality, achieved in reasonable times....something that Kojima yet has to do!
Also by 2013, beginning 2014, we will probably get the next generation so he definitely will arrive too late to the party!

    P.S.
His FOX Engine looks nothing groundbreaking and it won't have much time to impress since the Unreal Engine 4 will probably be released this year (Epic Games said so at least) with the first games powered by it appearing sometime in 2013/2014.

    @Deano_98
I was talking only about this generation's consoles since it is hard to make comparisons with the handled.
Now I edited the post so it is more clear.

@Cjail considering he wasn't even supposed to be involved in MGS4 and that it was also supposed to be the last in the series you can't really fault him.
    You're also forgetting Peace Walker

I'm still hoping for MG1 and MG2 current gen remakes one day, a game with The Boss and her Cobras sounds intriguing though

Sorry if I'm missing it, I believe I did read the article from beginning to end, however, what does the picture at the end have to do with it?

Why is Eurogamer reporting on the wild guessing of an investment firm as if it's news?
  • Schmoke-n-a-pancake #11 3 months ago

April 13 seems highly unlikely, that's just 14 months away and we've seen absolutely nothing of this game.

Would make a great launch title for the next Xbox or Playstation.

I remember the days when Nintendo weren't the only ones saying games are finished when they are finished.

Hopefully the fifth installment includes trophies.

I personally would just like a full remake of Metal Gear 1 and 2 and then leave the series alone,i can't see how a 'Metal Gear' could be involved in this game set at the time of the invasion of Normandy anyway, seen as though the idea of a 'bipedal walking tank' was being pitched by Granin in Metal Gear Solid 3
  • MattEdWithCheese #15 3 months ago

Or you could take elements of what made the series great and create a new IP with a story that hasn't already been finished...

Seeing as MGS4 was supposed to be Snake's farewell, I cant see this idea as anything other than a cash in. Oh well.
  • darleysam #17 3 months ago

".. and here is where we turn people into Wayne Rooney."
  • anthonypappa #18 3 months ago

@geeza2020 : MGS3 was set in 1964. MGS 2 was set in 2007 or something... so i don't think another MGS is out of the question since they never ran in date order.

A speculated release date? Sounds Solidus a rock...

I love the Metal Gear games, brilliant, they're all master pieces, but everything was wrapped up in MGS4. Not sure where they can go with a fifth game.

Should be interesting to find out I'm sure.

Complete remakes of the original NES Metal gear and Metal Gear 2 are the way to go. Just imagine the Snake - Grey Fox fight in an environment like that countdown for Peace Walker:

They have the capability to flesh out the story.

Metal Gear Solid is the best in the series, anyone who say otherwise is a ballbag
