Final Fantasy 13-2 "to be continued" ending explained

Is Final Fantasy 13-3 inevitable?

Square Enix has explained Final Fantasy 13-2's "to be continued" ending, which last week sparked speculation that Final Fantasy 13-3 was inevitable.

This isn't the case, director Motomu Toriyama told Japanese press at the Taipei Game Show 2012 event (via Andriasang).

There were a number of reasons for the inclusion of the "to be continued" ending. One, because Square Enix wanted to encourage players to find all of the Paradox Endings hidden away in the game.

Another is because Final Fantasy 13-2 will be extended through DLC, meaning players can expect a long play experience. Toriyama told fans Square Enix will continually release DLC, which is still being developed for the game.

Upcoming DLC includes the addition of Lightning and Amodar to the Coliseum Battle mode (confirmed for release in Europe on 7th February on Xbox Live and 8th February on PlayStation Network).

There's also a "large" Lightning Episode in the works. Episodes for Snow and Sazh are also expected.

Great, more camp twaddle from a cast of twee goons, just what the series needs.

No doubt I will play it though!

    Is Final Fantasy 13-2 inevitable?

    Need to change the subhead

I'm sure it's just coincidence that they happen to have trademarked Final Fantasy XIII-3 though...

I cant help be feel a bit cynical that the DLC is there to claw back monies spent on FFXIII and VS development, funding the FF train until VS finally get a release, because surely development must have switched in to over drive for that game its been in production for ever now...

Thanks for putting ending spoilers in your headline, Eurogamer. Cheers for that.

While I like episodic stories the problem is that they can be a total bummer if the follow up never comes like with legacy of kain: soul reaver and Half Life 2

I only just started play this at the weekend - looks like I can save myself some time now that I know the ending :(

Why are people moaning about a 'to be continued' being a spoiler? anyone who reads the site would have noticed the DLC headings placed recently. OMG DLC IS COMING WHY YOU SPOIL IT

No idea why they are pushing this incarnation of FF so hard. The world/characters/visual style is the worst since X-2.

@roquey - I am one of those people who wants to know zero about a game that I want to play. Absolutely every single thing can be a spoiler from a picture to a headline.

@bumyoghurt Then reading games sites inst helping your cause is it?

On another note, when i bought my game, Tesco had it up as:

    'Final Fantasy XIII-3 O-ring'

Whew, was worried there ll be FFXII-2-2, FFXII-2 Episode 1,2,3 etc!

"To be continued" at the ending of a long game is one of the MOST FRUSTRATING thing to encounter!

Though I have no problem for the game being part of a trilogy or series. As long as its all written out very well as to there being a strong sense of achievements, having clear conclusions to the immediate story arcs, while knowing the larger war is still unfinished. Mass Effect series as an example.

    Dear Square Enix,

Please stop wasting time and energy on FFXIII, it's easily the weakest FF game I've ever played - the world, the characters, the story, the battle system - everything about it was rubbish.

Please just make FFXV already - maybe you can redeem yourselves with that.

    Love and Hugs,
    A Former Fan

P.S. If you're looking for hints on how to get started, try looking at FFV, VII, IX and XII. They had some great ideas. And while you're at it, why not take a look at FF Tactics - that was just about your best game ever.

P.P.S. And perhaps try making a story that stands alone, without the need for sequels or DLC? Again, see above games.

    @Frosty840 Yea thanks EG, thanks.

A current-gen version of FF8 would be ace, it couldn't quite reach what it wanted to be because of restrictions, but it would be awesome.

Lets first wait to see the official sales numbers for ff13-2, then talk sequel. Personally, I'm pretty interested how it sold, as I decided to skip it after watch live gameplay sessions and disliking original ff13.

Final Fantasy had love for you if you were born in the 80's.

    The 80's.

@Schiraman "If you're looking for hints on how to get started, try looking at FFV, VII, IX and XII."

Yes. God forbid they take hints from the best game in the series. Amazing soundtrack? No main character? The bad guy actually _wins_?

You're right, an FFVI-based game would just be too good.

    @Triggerhappytel "Trademarked FF13-3"

That was done by SE's USA branch. SE Japan were asked about it by a voice actor of the game themselves due to the rumor and were told that they had no idea it was trademarked at the time, and that they had no plans to do a FF13-3.

USA explained that it was done for legal reasons.

But there will be a XIII-3...
  • bikmate #23 4 months ago

I don't believe in spoilers, it actually makes things more interesting for me. In this case because you might know that the ending is open, but you don't know the story which leads up to that to be continued ending.
  • VibratingDonkey #24 4 months ago

So if you want the ending you have to buy the DLC? That sounds tacky.

i finished the game 2 days after it came out im still looking for wild artifacts and i appreciate all of tetsuya nomuras work on the characters noel is a boss and the game developers have my full respect final fantasy 13 series had its little bumps because it was trying to appeal more to non rpg gamers being less complex than the previous versions and trying to get them involved in the fun too i loved both the games the visuals blew my mind as always you get your odd character you dislike and ones you love and the story is EPIC and the soundtrack is legendary the monster system like pokemon i love greatly when i saw to be continued i was like O: more FF no ending yet <3 . seeing all the character models goto waste at the end is really heart breaking for square people should understand they love it as much as the people who like it people should stop bashing it its not 7 ANYMORE ITS THE FUTURE 7 IS GONEEEEEEEEEE EVERY FANTASY IS DIFFERENT IF ITS NOT YOUR THING DONT BUY ITTTTTTTTTTTTTT i BOUGHT All the final fantasys and still have them ^_^ but once a fantasy is gone you miss it i knew that feeling with all the ones i played but just learn to forget and live in the Present not the past dont be a paradox

I'm actually excited to see how the DLC adds on. While on one hand, yes, I think it all should have already been in the game to start with (Considering the first installment was well over 50-60 hours long and this one hit 40 tops) I also see within the other hand there being a lot on a game-developer's plate that they wanted to try something different. Honestly, I believe that no matter what the outcome, people would just complain anyway. It's just how people who play video games are. And by the way, FF13-FF13-2 didn't suck when you pare it up with what has come out this year. When it comes to the Final Fantasy series, they do a smashing job, honestly. Each different universe and timeline may not be as "awsome" as a previous one, but some need to look at these games for what they are trying to be. And honestly, I'm looking forward to maybe seeing another Dissidia.
