Lightning, Snow and Sazh FF 13-2 DLC episodes teased

Character specific volumes to extend story.

Square Enix has teased character specific Final Fantasy 13-2 DLC episodes.

These will release following the launch of the game, director Motomu Toriyama and producer Yoshinori Kitase said in an interview printed in the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Ultimania guide books (spotted by Andriasang).

They refer to XIII-2 as the game's "Noel and Serah Volume." We can also expect a Lightning Volume, a Snow Volume, a Sazh Volume, and more.

What form these episodes take remains unannounced.

The role-playing game launches in the UK on Friday. Square Enix has already announced the first batch of DLC, which goes live on 7th February on Xbox Live Arcade and the day after on PlayStation Network.

It has also confirmed plans to release additional story episodes for some of the game's key characters, though wouldn't offer additional detail on exactly what to expect. Could the character specific volumes referred to above apply?

One of the game's endings offers up a 'To be continued...' tease. Is Square planning a downloadable epilogue? Or is Final Fantasy 13-3 on the way?

I wish DLC would just piss off. :/

Man, it's kinda horrible to see what Final Fantasy has become this generation. Awful soulless stuff compared to what it once was.

Yeah got to agree with this. I will always keep playing it though, just hope tomorrow brings a pleasant surprise in 13-2.

Blizzard, Sleet and Mush to get their own DLC content later this year!
  • Widge #5 3 weeks ago

Awesome, "wait for the GOTY" strategy confirmed.
  • Spong #6 3 weeks ago

Yet more reasons not to buy the game this Friday and wait for a GOTY edition.
It upsets me to see something that was once so great stoop so low.

I wonder how many posts it will take before someone mentions that XIII was linear and didn't kick in until the 20 hour mark; ignoring that X was also linear, had a terrible battle system and didn't get good until the 50 hour mark...

Also confused by XIII-2's return to Random Encounters, makes no sense...
    Even DQIX had Field Encounters...

As with all DLC, I say that as long as the amount of content included is reasonable for the price you pay for it and that it feels additive rather than chopped off the main game then I'm for it...

    @MattEdWithCheese

    FUCKING THIS.

I'll go one step further and say that I think Final Fantasy X is much worse than XIII and I absolutely hate it.

I dunno, DLC isn't that bad if it's done properly. The main 13-2 game would become so convoluted if it had all of the character's stories within the main game and then people would complain at the inevitable dilution that the script writers would have to implement.

Having DLC can be good as for one thing, it's often far too long between Final Fantasy releases (might be a good thing I guess, judging by the majority opinion of what was 13) so personally I like to have a little extra to look forward to and to help bridge that gap.

I'm guessing they won't be free?
  • Cid #11 3 weeks ago

I could forgive FFX's linearity because the world and storyline were rather good. Unlike those of XIII.

It also had the best battle system in the series.

Hopefully this isn't stuff that was cut away from the game in the first place... and hopefully it's well made and such.
  • Nico4 #13 3 weeks ago

@Cid Oh how I couldn't agree with you more. That game was excellent

DLC is great for bringing life back in to a game but announcing it before the game is launched is just rubbing it in people's faces that you aren't going to get the full experience.

I've payed almost £80 for the crystal edition of the game, and I'm still going to be expected to sell out more...
  • Skyclad #15 3 weeks ago

How can you compare X's linearity to XIII's?
Yes, both had long corridors ... but that's about it.

    Let's see:
In X, there were towns, merchants, conversations and an airship.
In X, you could go back to most areas you've been to.
In X, there were tons of side-missions.

    What did XIII offer?

As for the DLC - why on earth do developers talk about future DLC before a game is released? I surely don't think "hey, if the DLC is going to be that good, I HAVE to buy the game at launch!"
    But that's just me ...

20 hours then no linearity? shit im 34 hours in and not long ago i was only just able to change my party. Then again i am going slow and grinding a lil bit. I quite like this battle system, then again im a fan of the whole turn based yet realtime idea.

This Whole X or XIII idea? i cant remember X so much, most of it was blitzball for me. however XII i don't appreciate the corridors of game play, however i wouldn't say its the worse i've played. I didn't like XII one bit, couldn't get into it at all.

My level of seething towards these DLC announcements centres on whether these provide self contained side stories or if they continue the main plot and you need to buy DLC to get the 'real' ending....

I got FFXIII-2 for the PS3 yesterday (thank you, ShopTo!) and really enjoyed the first couple of hours up to the start of Episode 2. It seems to be a better game overall than FFXIII although the music is disappointing. It's very charming, looks gorgeous and runs well, apart from some minor framerate issues in the cutscenes, and the combat is enjoyable even though enemies now materialise randomly near you as you explore (you can run away however if you choose). All-in-all, it looks very promising and I look forward to spending more time with it over the next few days. :)

I presume there is a decent amount of content in this game already if it's a 25+ hour RPG so I don't object to the idea of specific DLC 'volumes' for other characters as long as the pricing reflects the amount of content. It is no different from, say, Skyrim's forthcoming DLC in that respect, i.e. the game still has all the intended content but the extra DLC is just optional stuff that you can ignore if you want without it spoiling your enjoyment of the main game.

    'Extend story' or finish it?
Fucking DLC was going to buy this but it can fook right off now.

I bought a sandwich yesterday (thank you, Sainsbury's!).

    @Darren "the music is disappointing"

    You can say that again.

I don't agree with DLC in general, but for this game in particular, after playing it to death yesterday (thanks shopto!!), it should bare no relevance to the main game.

Besides, if you finish the main game, at least the content is purely optional afterwards to extend it a bit more surely??

As for linearity, by chapter 3, you'll be already thrown into the deep end as it is. Historia Crux system is really interesting. You can re-visit chapters, face past enemies to gain newer items, change past levels outright due to events later on in the game, monster collecting that effects your playstyle so much that you have to create 3 paradigm setups for different scenarios, and i'm only 9 hours in. The game is very good so far in my opinion.

I hope they don't remake FF7, because at this rate they'd fuck it up completely. Have all the decent game designers from the 90s retired in the past 5 years or something?
  • Feanor #24 3 weeks ago

Will wait for the complete edition later this year.
  • alcides #25 3 weeks ago

International editions make FF the series with the most expensive extentions ever, looking back before the DLC era. Be glad they don't have you pay for the full game again.

In the words of FFIX's Moguo: STOP IT, STOP IT, STOP IT! KUPHEH!!!!!
  • Nazo #27 3 weeks ago

I think these could be interesting if they are done well, Snow and Sahz's brief appearances in the main game hint that they've been up to their own adventures. These would feel like genuine add-ons to me.

A downloadable epilogue would not be welcome though, that would feel like something that should have been included.
