Capcom announces Resident Evil 6
Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy star, trailer within.
Resident Evil 6 launches on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 20th November 2012, with a PC version to follow later, publisher Capcom has announced.
Set 10 years after the initial Raccoon City outbreak, the game sees series regulars Leon S Kennedy and Chris Redfield dealing with zombie outbreaks across the globe.
As seen in the reveal trailer below, Kennedy is fighting off the undead in a small town in the US after the president gets infected, while Redfield is in an unnamed Chinese metropolis dealing with a bioterrorist threat there.
We reckon we spotted Resident Evil 4 damsel in distress Ashley in there somewhere too.
"From the outset the team's intention was to create an experience that delivers a gripping storyline, tense single-player and co-op action all set against a constant theme of horror. We are calling this fusion dramatic horror and are confident it will resonate with both existing fans of the series as well as newcomers," commented executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi
"Resident Evil 6 represents a giant stride forward in the evolution of the series," added Capcom R&D boss Katsuhiko Ichii.
"The development team, led by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, is working tirelessly to deliver the most impressive Resident Evil title ever both in terms of scope and production values. We are all genuinely excited by the title and cannot wait to share it with the world."
That's all the information Capcom has released for now, but promises news on "new characters and co-op details" soon.
The last numbered entry in Capcom's long-running survival horror series came out back in 2009, picking up a 7/10 from Eurogamer. See our Resident Evil 5 review for details.

Wow! It's Resi 4 & 5 all over again. Way to ignore everyone Capcom and just keep pumping out mindless action games that aren't anywhere near the 'survival horror' that once made the series so great.
Looks like a shit game to me. That opinion might change as more info is released, but I simply don't want another Resi 4/5.

The trailer showed forced co-op, zombies with automatic weapons, cover mechanics, OTT fist fighting... Everything I hated in RE5 is more prominent.
Guessing they'll split the game into 3 play styles with Leon's being closer to RE4 and Chris' being closer to RE5 (not sure about the third character). However the problem with splitting the game up that is this: Why would I want to play a game were I only really like 1/3rd of it?
Yet more lies from Capcom, after RE5, they said the series would get a reboot and it'd move back to being a horror. This is more of an action game than the series has ever been and the plot looks set to be a direct continuation.

Zombies - FUCK YES! About time and well overdue. Finally Capcom listen to their fans, even if a little bit.
Cover system - Don't know if it's constant like Gears of War or only at select locations like Resi 5, but I don't think I'd want it in a Resi game. Cover works when there are other enemies firing at you, unless the zombies have grown a brain and can shoot rockets at you (watching the trailer again, it seems that some enemies can
Single player - So far, most of it looks like it's based in single player. Only seen Leon and Chris in seperate locations and on their own. The co-op segments appear to have 2 new characters so hopefully the co-op story is seperate to the main campaign and not forced on us.
Fighting sections - Again, a bit mixed on this. Could be a welcome addition to the gameplay formula, but kung-fuing zombies looks slightly daft considering the possibility of infection.
Overall, mixed from me. Need more details before deciding if it'll be good or not. I hope it is, I'm desperate for a good Resi game as it's been a good 8 years since the last one I truly enjoyed.

Note to Capcom. Player needs to be ALONE to experience themes of horror that first 2 RE games were famous for. Adding co-op action makes it another trigger happy 3rd person shooter like Gears.

All I can think of right now is "ZOMG Zombies WOOOOOOO ZOMBIES ARE BACK WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
I still think people are a bit hard on the Resi 4/5 control scheme. I don't mind it - as long as they add to it now. Moving whilst aiming, a tension as well as action (because all tension and no delivery is just as cheap as all action and no tension). You know, take what they did and improve on it.
The scale looks to have been ramped up. The graphics look nice. But it is kind of hard to judge until we see a proper playthrough example, rather than a showy trailer that chops about all over the place like someone with ADD got into the editing suite.
It's a nice trailer. It's got a bit of a blend, some old concepts and some new, some borrowed and one or two blue. Will this marriage between classic and current work?
Well... Capcom, that is down to you guys.
But thanks for bringing the zombies back. I, personally, have missed the T-Virus a lot...

I don't see that as a bad thing. Capcom are going by sales figures, and we forget so easily the change in direction was because sales figures for the series were plummeting faster and faster with each installment. I actually think there is a chance we'll see some proper horror in there - I see a blend of many different ideas and styles. Will the unify? Who knows. It's a trailer. The chances of making a serious logical deduction at this stage are pretty minimal at best.
And if Resident Evil does decide to totally abandon Survival Horror... there are new entries coming into the genre this year. Resident Evil may have become too big to fit back in that box. It's time to let it roam free and explore what it can do.
I just compared Resident Evil to a wild animal in captivity. I have no shame.

Sherry, as I've said before, is the last tiny loose end the series hasn't quite got to clearing up yet. After her supposed "adoption" in the Resident Evil 3 epilogue (military orphanage I believe), her story seems to end. It's an empty ending though, there's no real... heart in it. Claire and Leon abandon Sherry in a military orphanage and run around in their own little world. There's... something missing. I dunno what.
Resi 6 probably isn't the reboot people were looking for. No. It's got a lot of jumbled-up ideas in there too. But who knows? It may actually turn out to be really very good.
Until someone has sat down with an early build and can give us a proper hands-on, it's quite hard to tell really... not least because the game seems to have multiple characters on multiple storylines in multiple places doing multiple things.
It will be incredibly OTT though. I think we can safely say that without anyone arguing.

The technology now available may have changed the genre beyond all recognition. With it has come more opportunities to show off; be creative and generally make the horrors bigger, uglier, faster. Better AI coding means the zombies will be a little less the slow, dreary ones we all knew who sounded like they were walking around with a packet of crisps hidden in their shoes.
I'm not saying this is good news - I do kind of lament the old styles. But I also accept that people are broadening their horizons, and that very small niche that we used to call "Survival Horror" may indeed not have enough room for everyone anyway. The more people will do with what they have available will move the genre further and further away from what it used to be.
You can fight against the tide, or shrug and embrace the idea that progress brings change; sometimes good, sometimes bad, but you don't know until its done.
I'm embracing the change. Besides, if you want old-school horror, you have Amy oh that's right no-one LIKES the old-school stylings of Amy. Hell, I remember the original Resident Evil and the confusion and long periods between saving, Silent Hill and the general checkpoint/save skullduggery. Amy is no better, and no worse, than what has preceded it.
Amy is probably as good a case as you'll see that perhaps the genre is moving on because it's time to move on, and diversify, and explore.
This could also be the ramblings of someone who wants to see a silver lining though...

Survival horror is a dying genre. The main reason for that is because it's a genre that works best when enjoyed in single player and pretty much everyone has abandoned the single player focussed games in exchange for the milk-able multiplayer focussed experience. I still wish for Resi to return to its glory days, but it looks very very unlikely. Fact is, as much as Resi 5 was hated by the fans, myself included, it sold a shit load and that made up Capcom's mind, despite their promises of "re-booting" the franchise.

Sorry to burst the bubble of many, but survival horror is dead. The third person action genre has progressed a lot since RE4, and Capcom must adapt to that change or get buried by the competition.
Punching and kicking zombies when you ammo runs low is a damn improvement, because that what you'd do, in a survivalist way (hope they ditch the pathetic knife crap). Hope there's some SF influence in there.

The absence of traditional survival horror mechanics in modern attempts at horror simply mean the developers went for a more run & gun gameplay style to appeal to the lowest common denominator. In short: it has little to do with technology but more with originality, or the lack thereof.
Much like Resident Evil 4 and 5, Resident Evil 6 will just be another forgettable third-person shooter with Capcom's brand slapped on the box. And because the masses are easily manipulated, it'll probably sell like the cure for cancer.
And I'm not even going to dwell on the poorly designed mess that is Amy.

This does look good, but I do have a couple of concerns.
Have Capcom learned nothing from the high praise that Resident Evil Revelations seems to be getting? The majority of Resident Evil fans (or at least, the majority of Resident Evil fans who bother to voice an opinion) seem to prefer the slower-paced gameplay that seems to be a feature of Resident Evil Revelations. I freely admit however, that it might just seem that way to me because I generally do prefer 'old-school' style survival horror games myself.
The trailer makes Resident Evil 6 look very action-y.
The idea of one character having an action storyline while the other has a hirror storyline might work quite well. Or perhaps Capcom are planning an ‘action mode’ and a ‘horror mode’?
Very pleased that co-op is returning as it was one of the best co-op experiences I’ve had. However, I hope they don't screw up single player by forcing teamwork with an A. I. controlled partner in order to accomadate co-op. Much as I enjoyed co-op in Resident Evil 5, I’d gladly forego that experience in Resident Evil 6 if it means getting a better single-player experience.
A nice surprise to hear the release date is as close as it is - thats if there's no delay.
Overall, I would describe my initial reaction as ‘cautiously optimistic’.

In the end RE6 leaves feeling cold and very underwhelmed, im not impressed (really im becoming evermore disolusioned with where gaming is going in general. Its like IMO all theese new games coming out/current gen games in general, its like there/they've metamorphosised into the same giant blob of shittyness and blandness, Games made by the suits/execs & games made by the numbers for the idiot sheep masses who on the whole don't understand/value true quality. Games now made by playing it safe and appealling to all, games made to be consumed by the dumb masses in their millions. Its because of all that mentioned, that we end up with games like those seen in this trailer, and thats a bad thing for those of us who truly care about our hobby & where its going).
So ultimately in conclusion I will have nothing too do with RE6.... Im just absolutely tired, tired of this OTT hollywood style, boring, uninspired, by the numbers, generic, shallow, cliche ridden CRAP. -_-

- I'm late to the party here, but this post caught my eye -
You make a really good point here whilst at the same time missing the point. You seem to think that design decisions forced by necessity are a bad thing. Being forced to keep feet on the ground can (and has) led to more focused games in the past.
It doesn't really matter whether capcom wanted the original Resi to have hordes of running pseudo-zombies being spinning-bird-kicked by OTT muscular heroes; what matters is that we got the original Resi. A brilliant game, adored by fans, that birthed a series that's sold an absolute shit load.
Resi' 4 showed that new techniques and a new style can still retain a survival horror feel. Resident Evil 5 abandoned this - not because of tech' progress, but because of artistic/design choices.
Now I didn't hate Resi 5. I thought it was an okay action game. I did, however, think the 'forced co-op' detracted from the SP mode. And it didn't really feel like a Resi game at all (unlike 4 IMHO - which is a masterpiece).
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Like many others above, any purchase will likely depend on how they implement co-op. If it's forced with crappy AI in the SP campaign, I'll certainly wait for it to drop in price, or even buy second hand as way of protest to Capcom (if we want a return to the original RE feel then the only way to encourage that is not to keep buying RE titles).
If the SP is distinct from co-op, and has a tense, nervous feel to the action (as did Resi 4 and the original Dead Space, which I'm playing now), then I'll buy it.
Nervously and cautiously awaiting further details.
P.S. Happy to acknowledge that I called this announcement wrong - assumed it was to do with the film/RE:R.

More seriously, if they're promising a 'gripping storyline' why isn't the name of the writer on the credits? Game companies worldwide talk about their stories in interviews but we rarely get to find out who is doing the work on these. My impression from previous RE games is that it has been a producer who has learnt how to use a pen, not someone with a genuine passion about working on their craft.

However, the genre hasn't died - don't be ridiculous. The "survival horror" genre existed before the PS1 days, and did very well for itself.
Graphically - I'll start at 1989 with the Japanese release of Sweet Home - an 8-bit horror RPG that kind of laid down the framework for Resident Evil. And why yes, it was by Capcom. I wonder if we can get away with calling Maniac Mansion a survival horror too? I know it was point-and-click adventure, but it was kind of meant to be...
The 16-bit era brought new graphics, new power and therefore more possibilities. The obvious mention here is Clock Tower, which is more of a traditional idea of survival horror, but it wasn't alone. The Immortal was classed as a horror game (isometric RPG and iirc, bloody hard as nails!), Zombies Ate My Neighbours! was a horror - arguably survival horror with humour and verve, but wholly action in itself.
Then we moved on into the world of 3D, limited in power compared to what we have and making creative moves towards "cinematic" horror. We can trace it quite well from there.
The genre has ALWAYS been changing, always been adapting to new ideas, concepts, power and technology. To argue somehow the idea that Resident Evil has gone more action is "against the genre" is, frankly, as hilarious as it is plain wrong. The horror genre - let's forget the survival bit here, because when we say "survival horror" we mean PS1 era mechanics - has never really stayed in one place for very long, or stayed terribly serious for very long (Resident Evil 3, for example, is utterly hilarious and full of the smuttiest, dirtiest humour you can imagine!)
We can't cling on any more. The genre is changing - as it always has done. Amy uses mechanics and concepts that are simply old-school, and were used by the old Resident Evil games and Silent Hill and Clock Tower et al. Amy is, essentially, the old-school horror people have been begging for.
And no-one wants it. Or rather, very few of us want it.
That's all the evidence you need to tell you that that old style is, probably, no longer what people want... and therefore, change is necessary.

It seems that a game is perceived as outdated these days if it's not an action shooter, which causes me problems as I often think I'd enjoy games more if I didn't even have a gun. Imagine the tension in a Resident Evil title if you were unarmed (I'm sure you'll all have ran out of ammo in the earlier games to know). In horror movies, the hero is rarely armed to the teeth and I just find it hard to feel on edge with a massive arsenal of weapons and a team of marines behind me.

No need to lecture me about survival horror and its origins, I'm a collector and own almost every release that is horror-related (physical copies). The genre has indeed been changing and I welcomed the change for years. Up until one point: Resident Evil 4. Every bloody "horror" game nowadays forces a gun into the player's hands and encourages them to go on a rampage - and yes, that is 100% against the genre - and we have RE4 to thank for that. You can argue all you want, no wall of text can contradict this fact.
You say change is necessary, yet RE6 won't change a damn thing about the series. It will only follow in the footsteps of 4 & 5. This time with a cover mechanic à la Gears of War (a six-year-old game, mind you).

There is no doubt while Resi hasn't been survival horror for over a decade the name does sell dull shooters as 5 being the best selling title so sadly shows.

Resident Evil 4 changed because the series needed to change. Resident Evil Remake and Zero and CV:X are all wonderful games, but the sales had gone down. Critics had turned against the series - I remember it all too well, how it was suddenly "Old-fashioned" and "Not up to modern standards" and a "Clunky, restrictive pile of arse". I remember those from the old Resident Evil Zero review here on EG.
Now of course, it's gone action-horror and we don't want that either. Oh no, we don't want this Capcom! Horror fans don't want to run around a city crumbling under the weight of a zombie apocalypse, fighting for their lives against massive monstrosities and finding out a sinister conspiracy that could spell the end of the political world as we know it!
Oh wait, sorry, that's EXACTLY what people want! They bought the awesome Resi 4, and Resi 5 in all its averageness. And people didn't buy Amy - didn't bother looking beyond the bugs at the heart of it, an old-school survival horror executed okay but not quite right in all regards. Because of that, you may not see Amy again. And by token, you may never see that breed of survival horror again, consigned like so many genres to the scrapbook of history.
I'm sorry Cerberus you feel like the genre and Capcom owe you something. I've been playing Resi games since the original PS1 release, and before that (Sweet Home woo!). I loved Resi 4 - okay, Resi 5 was a bit average but Resi 4 was amazing, and I disagree, it was EXACTLY what the genre needed - change, progress, new ideas. So clearly this style, this idea works - if Capcom can get the rest of it right, that blend of humour and smut alongside serious WTF moments, times of anticipation and tension and yes, a couple of puzzles wouldn't hurt - although I suspect that ship may also have sailed, it's one of the things everyone ripped Silent Hill: Homecoming apart over.
This is, unfortunately for you, what the genre has marched towards. Any attempt to justify the return of the old styles sank with Amy - and seriously, Amy was not terrible. It just wasn't that bad. I'd give it a 5 - because it wasn't great either. But I had fun with Amy. Even though that's probably not the wisest line to use...
I will close on one concession though - I absolutely do not get why the movies pull in so many millions. Okay, interactive game you can excuse a dumb and cheesy plot to some regard, and dodgy voice acting in video games has been par for the course. But in a movie? A BIG-budget movie?
I'd rather watch Transformers: Dark of the Moon...
I'm not joking.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
And to say Capcom are purposely after the CoD market is short sighted. Yes, they would obviously like piece of that, who wouldn't? What also has to be remembered is Resident Evil has never, ever been a thing that wasn't marketed to as many as possible. It's always pursued mass appeal so don't go jumping off the bandwagon now because of that, it proves how little self-awareness you had.
Plus, how can it now be like CoD so is now shit? It's clearly an evolution of a game that came out 8 years ago... much before this maligned 'CoD demographic' came along.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Coincidentally, that event mirrors my feelings towards modern attempts at horror games. In this case, the modern RE games being the cake and the candles representing Capcom's empty promises of a return to the survival horror formula. They can stuff their faces for all I care, and so can you.
Your nonsensical walls of text are tiring, Kami. Survival horror hasn't changed, it's as good as dead. So, let's agree to disagree. You can pay 50€ for another forgettable soulless shooter that was specifically designed for the masses - and to answer your last question: as were the movies - but I, on the other hand, am not so gullible.

So yeah, I would say I'm a fan of the PS1/PS2 era of survival horror.
However, I do agree that people shouldn't be so rigid in their thinking as to what survival horror is, or what it can be. As you quite rightly point out, it has changed a lot and will doubtless continue to do so.
For example, I consider the first Condemned game to be survival horror - very much like that found in the PS1/PS2 era. It may be in 1st Person and may have better graphics than that era - but in many ways (such as the scarcity of ammo and the overall creepiness) it plays very much like a PS1/PS2 era horror game.
I also consider games like F.E.A.R. and Resident Evil 5 to be horror games. Maybe not 'survival horror' but 'action horror'. Still horror though. I feel sure there is room for both - for all - kinds of horror game in this day and age.
At the end of the day, PS1/PS2 era 'survival horror' is my favourite kind of horror game. But that, for me at least, is the important thing. I'm a fan of horror games, not just 'survival horror' games, so I'm more than happy to give the new generation of 'action horror' games a go.
It looks as though Capcom are trying a mix of several kinds of horror for Resident Evil 6, so I'm really quite intrigued by that, and as I've said, I'd describe myself as 'cautiously optimistic' about the future of the series.
Having said that - COME ON CAPCOM - RELEASE RESIDENT EVIL REVELATIONS FOR 'LIVING ROOM' CONSOLES TOO! It looks brilliant and I'm rubbish with portables!
Um, don't really know where I was going with this reply. Hope it made some sense.

Im just absolutely tired, tired of this OTT/ADD hollywood style, boring, uninspired, by the numbers, generic, shallow, cliche ridden CRAP. -_-

Capcoms new business model is an insult.

Looking pretty good imo as a action/horror game, but a shame its moved away more from the slow/tense horror of old.
If the silent hill team ever pull their finger out and get the surviial horror mojo back, i guess we have all the bases covered!
