Microsoft reveals Xbox 360 dashboard update delay

UPDATE: New dash rolling out now.

UPDATE: According to a Tweet from Microsoft's Major Nelson, "the first set of customers will be getting the Xbox Live update within the next few hours."

ORIGINAL STORY: Microsoft has revealed a last-minute delay for the autumn Xbox 360 dashboard update, which was scheduled to roll out at 3pm UK time today.

Xbox spokesman Major Nelson tweeted the news just 29 minutes before the Xbox 360 update was due.

"FYI: The timing for Xbox 360 dashboard update has been slightly delayed," he wrote. "I'll have a status update later today."

"Thanks again for your patience. I won't have additional details until later today. The moment I have new information, I'll share it w/ you," he added.

Microsoft's much-heralded dashboard update refreshes the console's operating system to the Windows 8/Phone 7 Metro interface.

It also marks the beginning of a large list of video apps that will be available on Xbox 360, including on-demand TV services such as 4OD and, in the new year, BBC.

Cloud storage for game saves and your Xbox Live profile, Bing search and a deeper integration of social features are also included.

Microsoft's vision for the future of living rooms.

It always puzzles me how a massive company such a MS, would have to have a delay at the last minute to something so big. Surely the data has been ready for a while and it would be a simple - GO - command to set it rolling.

This isn't the world-ending disaster some Twitter users seem to think it is, but I'm wondering what could have thrown a spanner in the works this late on.

The new dash has been in closed beta for a couple of months, and I'd have thought they've had a release candidate since the date was made public. Microsoft will have known this release date internally for a while now, so they should've had their server stuff in place and ready to roll.

Hopefully it's just a small hiccup, but the lack of a timeframe makes me think they don't actually know what the cause is, or that it's going to be a big pain to fix and they don't want to admit it until they have an ETA.

In any case, I'm not expecting it today anymore - better to be surprised by a quick resolution than disappointed by a slow one.
  • schnide #9 6 months ago

Oh come on, the reason for the delay is obvious..

They're abandoning the Windows-based OS and moving to Android.

"Large list of video apps" - really? Where? There's the SD, low-choice (and really quite disappointing) Lovefilm app, and the standard Zune one too - but no more.

Astronomical winter is the one true winter, and begins with the winter solstice. That meteorological winter sounds a bit hopelessly vague, as the coldest three months will vary significantly from year to year and place to place.
  • arcam #30 6 months ago

There is no "official" date for the start of winter, it depends on the context of your question. You can all stop arguing now.
  • kinky_mong #31 6 months ago

Can the delay be indefinitely please Microsoft? I'd like the dashboard to stay with less than 75% of screen space taken up with adverts.
  • kinky_mong #32 6 months ago

Glad to see Future David Mitchell video return though! \o/
  • Bumbuliuz #33 6 months ago

I have always thought it funny to call it an autumn update. Why not call it a winter one? It's usually coming in November to December anyway.
  • Garulon #34 6 months ago

@DaftFunker You'd think, but a delay at least shows they're checking. I'm guessing it's something endstage like some numpty propping the debug version of the dashboard instead of release and they have to push the update out to hundreds of servers again.

MS is up to something. Have they got cold feet at the eleventh hour? Have they suddenly realised that a few too many machines in the preview programme had bricked? Personally, I think it's a good thing the update has been delayed.
  • Farzlepot #40 6 months ago

I'm not really interested in how it looks, what video services there are, or even how many ads are on it. I barely spend more than a few seconds looking at the dashboard, and that's merely the amount of time before booting a game up. The cloud storage of game saves in particular does interest me, as well as the apparent removal of the need to import your profile for half an hour when playing at a mate's house. It's for those reasons alone I'm quite looking forward to it. But I'd rather they didn't rush it if it's not ready for whatever reason, as I'm not particularly interested in a bricked Xbox either.

Besides, I'll be staying offline for at least a few days to make sure it doesn't cock anything serious up anyway, so no rush at all for me!
  • Beano #41 6 months ago

@Spong I don't think that's something they suddenly discovers and delays the release for a few hours. If they suddenly discovered something critical (like bricking) it would be delayed for several days/weeks.
It's probably just a minor rollout issue.

    @Beano
Well, I guess we'll find out later just how long the update has been delayed. Although I'm sure we won't be told specifically why.

From my point of view though, it's a strange coincidence that, within minutes of this story breaking, I get a reply at MS Connect to my console failure report that I filed nearly three weeks ago. They claim problems with their system stopped them seeing reports, yet all the 'bugs' and 'suggestions' reports were completely unaffected.

I believe MS have finally caved to the growing number of consoles which have been bricked by this update. Like all big companies, a stone cold silence was their first stance, and under the weight of growing complaints, they've concocted some "system problem" excuse to us who complained and have delayed the roll out of the update. And rightly so, scaling up the numbers of screwed consoles in the preview, the potential global figures stood to be enormous.
  • Daddy-Doom-Bar #44 6 months ago

Laughing at all the idiots here who think it's winter already. What a bunch of knobs.
This delay dunt bother me, already in the preview so I'm bored of the new dash already. Nice to try out LoveFilm this morning, though. Free 30 day trial as well! Bargain!

  • WadiumArcadium #48 6 months ago

Got in the beta so been using it for quite a while. I think I actually prefer it to the old NXE but a return to the blades would be nice.
  • Spong #49 6 months ago

    @Beano
The last notable update was when MS implemented the new drive firmware earlier in the year for the new generation of game discs. That caused consoles to go on the fritz as well, and I think MS relented eventually and repaired them for free (after a fight).
  • ED209 #50 6 months ago

Well I heard from a reliable source they delayed it because you touch yourself at night.
Also if you spent 30 minutes recovering your profile when 'playing away' you should have just got a 360 memory unit/usb flash drive/a clue. The cloud storage will probably be more faffing than plug and play options.
I'm annoyed that I've only just worked out how to play game videos without going through Zune.

  • uiruki #54 6 months ago

Looking forward to the free cloud saving. Even if it only applies to a few of my games (I have a Japanese machine which I mostly play imported Cave shooters on), being able to play my region free stuff on either machine without messing up my local records is a great time saver.

It's a shame it has been delayed, but I'd rather have a delay than a bricked 360 - particularly one which is not easily replaceable in the UK. It seems ludicrous that they would have delayed it for anything but a real showstopper, so it'll be interesting to see whether they share anything about it.
  • Whitster #55 6 months ago

  • Beano #69 6 months ago

Installed it this morning - quick download and installing as usual.
But what a waste of screen-space - ads taking most of the space. And what's the point of using the Metro concept if we can't place links to our favorite games on the Home tab/page? - have I missed something?

On the positive side: it a bit faster to navigate between pages and cursor is placed on the inserted game by default, making it a quicker to launch.
  • Beano #70 6 months ago

@TazerFan MS didn't delay the update to "work out some kinks" in the update code.
But I agree that people got wound up over nothing. A few hours delay doesn't mean anything.

Dashboard is fucking awful. There was a general inelegance, a garishness, to the last one, but at least I felt it was catering to me and my gaming. Now, I'm lost in a clutter of advertisements and bullshit that has nothing to do with my gaming experience. I love how quickplay shows games I haven't played in 6 months. Fucking stupid. I don't think it's 1080p anymore either. Leave it to MS to completely fuck this up. Why do I pay for Gold, shouldn't that at least give me a commercial free dashboard? Fucking mess
  • Histeria #76 6 months ago

The dash is very nice and intuitive for Kinect users, but I'd imagine kinda clunky for controllers.

Overall I rather like it, although I'm a buit disappointed that none of the apps are there at launch.
  • RedSparrows #77 6 months ago

@lollage Careful Lollage, you might be dangerously close to talking sense there.

Quickplay is JUST LIKE YOUR RECENT GAMES LIST ON QUICKLAUNCH.

I like that it boots straight to your disc/quick play. It's what I ALWAYS use anyway.
  • levitate #78 6 months ago

Why not just call it "The Spring Update", announce it in the summer, delay it in fall and then release it in the winter. That way we'll all be happy but confused at the same time.

I'm a bit confused about the point of Kinect integration. It just about manages to pick up my 'regional' accent with voice control, but most options are a dead end requiring a controller anyway. The motion control also needs you to be perpendicular to the screen (in both axis) however i have more than 1 couch in my lounge (im a toff) and funnily enough they arent lined up in horizontal rows.
So the controller is still by far the most effective option.
I suppose the voice search will be useful though.

  • Toothball #81 6 months ago

Updated over breakfast, seems decent enough so far. Kinect controls are a lot snappier, although my initial attempts at voice search weren't all that successful. "Xbox Bing Halo", I muttered from the other side of the room. It came up with results for "kay walsh" instead, which doesn't seem all that great, but I didn't have to shout at least.
  • enzima #82 6 months ago

I may not agree with everything he says, but this is so right: " Why do I pay for Gold, shouldn't that at least give me a commercial free dashboard? ". At least the option to hide the ads and rearrange it with everything else. Other than that I find xbl fantastic.

Of course people like to complain. If they didn't, large sections of the internet would just shrivel up and disappear. Also the entirety of the British Isles. Complaining is our national past time after all.
  • Histeria #88 6 months ago

@lollage Should have been clearer. Meant none of the NEW apps (as opposed to apps for services that were there before the update).

That said, is LoveFilm new? Don't recall that one being there before.
  • The-Jack-Burton #89 6 months ago

Just spoke to MS support about the possibility of using the old dasboard, they said no, of course. But they also said that the new dashboard is designed for families with kids who have Kinect. I said I believe that the majority of their customers are simply gamers, and they asked me if I had seen the Kinect sales figures. I was little dumbfounded by this. I'm done complaining, back to Skyrim.
  • Morte-360 #90 6 months ago

Its one good feature at the moment is LOVEfilm witch I already have access to on both PS3 and PC on top of that most of the apps I would use are not on their yet. Why dont they just let you browse the internet I do it on PS3 its a good feature (though a bit clumsy and grainy). Plus I find the general layout quite poor its not a major deal either though on the whole Im neither impressed or annoyed with it.

I understand that online gaming needs the stable infrastructure, but as I don't have any interest in online gaming, why should I have to pay £30 a year to use the console as a media player. I don't have to pay to use my computer like one.

I completely agree and sympathise with you (as a fellow Silver subscriber who feels the same way you do about online gaming). Unfortunately though, iPlayer is the ONLY app that will be open to us. Barring the shitty Zune Player which is now mandatory to access the Music & Video Marketplace, ALL of the on-demand TV apps will apparently require a Gold subscription, including 4oD.

Why are so many people moaning about the dashboard, the ads, the new look, the apps, the lack of apps, MS moving away from games, hardcore this, Kinect that. Just put a game disc in select auto load and you'll never see the dashboard again and all you'll ever do is play games.

If you want to access downloaded games then the default first tab gives you access to all of that via quick play, for older games and the games market you can whizz between tabs with LB and RB quickly. You'll never see the tabs you're not interested in. Filtering is decent (although hidden away slightly) and you can find what you want just as easily as before.

The new dashboard is nice and clean, the new layout is an improvement, there is one small ad - bottom right icon on each tab (except music) which is so easily ignored it's unbelievable.

Tried Lovefilm last night, quality was very good - makes it easier to use than via my blu-ray player which is a bit clunky when it comes to connecting t'internet.

If only the Playstation online experience was any good, I would feel that MS would have to follow suit by increasing their free online offerings. I do feel that MS do have a legitimate case for charging for online gaming, when you look at the strain top games put on servers, and the extra fraud security I hope XBL offers. Maybe if Apple got in there with a home console (or even a more souped up Apple TV), then MS would have a real competitor in the online space.

    @telboy007, Interesting. ;)

However, I was flicking through some french flick where three of the female leads became very friendly indeed with one another.

Just got the update and I don’t understand what all the complaining is about. It looks ok, sure, things have been moved around, but it works, so what’s the big deal? There was adverts on the old dashboard, this may have more but who cares, don’t look at them. The first tab that opens is the game that is currently in the console so you can actually launch a game faster than previously as you needed to scroll to the “My Xbox” in order to launch on the older dashboard. I like the new look and it seems to be very responsive, so I can’t see any reason to complain.

Microsoft are offering more and more functionality to their console which I for one welcome. Mores the point, if you think it is bad now, wait for the next gen Xbox, it will the NORM, and I don’t see an issue with it.

I think people need to understand what people mean when they say "ads" Yes there are the ones clearly marked Advertisement but it is not that one that's the pain, it's the largest square with scrolling ads for games, dlc etc which might not always be relevant to your gaming interests. Now, if there was a way to decide this, like Tick boxes of genres you enjoy, this might make it a nicer thing to look at. Also with that square being the largest and NOT what's in your disc drive or even Inside Xbox being hidden away it's become really apparent that they're marketing towards families.
So far I'm just annoyed by everything being hidden away segment after segment.
Yeah, bring back blades or even the old dashboard.

For some of us outside UK and US, it's disappointing that voice control is (still) disabled. Will it ever be enabled?

    Quickplay!

It's all good. Better than before. Too bad the Windows Phone app isn't available.

Update installed and... this is bloody joke right? The real, usable UI for a games console with focus on games and what's on the console will be released tomorrow, right? No? Could we have the old dash back please?

Cant they just stop with the updating, it looks crap now, its now far too cluttered and not HD!! Microsoft fuck things up with their constant meddling. I have turned off the updating on my pc, pity cant do the same with the xbox.
