Guerrilla making a new Killzone - report

For PlayStation 4?

Guerrilla Games is making a new Killzone game, according to a report.

The latest issue of Edge magazine (via Gamerzines) claims the "bulk" of staff at the Dutch developer is working on the next game in the PlayStation exclusive series. Killzone 2 and 3 senior producer Steven Ter Heide is reportedly game director.

Guerrilla studio recruiter Adrian Smith is quoted as saying: "we've got to continue the Killzone franchise."

Earlier this week Edge reported that one of Sony's studios had stopped PlayStation 3 development and moved onto its successor.

The unnamed developer is also apparently involved in building the graphics technology for Sony's next system.

Is it Guerrilla Games?

Killzone 3 launched in February 2011 as a visual showcase for the PS3. Eurogamer's Killzone 3 review shot an 8/10.

Killzone Vita is currently in development at Sony Cambridge.

    Looking forward to another unachievable target render!
  • wizlon #2 6 months ago

    Killzone 3 blew me away graphically, a Killzone (or other Guerrilla franchise) on next gen hardware, would literally be mind blowing.

    @MattEdWithCheese

    If anything, I thought Killzone 2 and 3 surpassed it
  • Cjail #5 6 months ago

    Guerrilla Games is absolutely a magnificent developer and I will gladly buy their next game.
  • X3Entente #6 6 months ago

    I wish guerilla would harness the extra computing power to evolve the core gameplay rather then the graphics, which in my opinion reached a saturation point already this gen. They should increase the size of the environments and make the gameplay less linear instead of throwing extra pixels at the screen
  • jefranklin18 #7 6 months ago

    @Wizlon

    I hope not literally as Sony would have a massive lawsuit on their hands.

    Looking forward to seeing how many hours of cutscenes they can squeeze into this one.

    @Cowbomb Nope!

    And the final game:
    Certain elements perhaps, but on the whole I disagree...

    Sony would do well to get Guerrilla in to work on a Graphics Engine for the new PS4. The only other developer that springs to mind for this sort of work is Naughty Dog...
  • wattsn26 #14 6 months ago

    The graphics will be photorealistic then?
  • Cjail #15 6 months ago

    @Dave52
    The unholy trinity of PS3 is Guerrilla Games, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica Studios...I still wait for Team Ico to join them though.

    @MattEdWithCheese What exactly are you trying to prove? Killzone 2 & 3 may have not been to everyone's tastes but they were very handsome games, regardless of comparisons to target renders.
  • DozyKipper #17 6 months ago

    @Cjail Good point. At this rate, The Last Guardian is going to end up being on the PlayStation 4!
  • HeNiCiDe1988 #18 6 months ago

    I think it would be smarter to release the next UC and KZ on the PS4. I think they look the best they gonna look this generation. Same with I would have MGS5 on the next generation list.
    Hopefully the multiplayer will be more of its own than shadows of other MP.
  • Widge #19 6 months ago

    Technically they didn't match that target render, artistically it was much better.
  • kwolf666 #20 6 months ago

    I do hope the PS4 is not going to have an awkward cell architecture leading to shitty ports... Well I think I'll return to PC gaming anyway, considering the bugs, framerate stutters, screen tearing that have characterized this generation. What was the advantage of console gaming again?
  • MattEdWithCheese #21 6 months ago

    @wizlon only that target renders are a very bad idea, they just cause disappointment...

    I'd rather have a lower expectation of a game's graphical performance than what is available in the final product; for example: The God of War 3 E3 2009 Demo being nowhere near as pretty as the final game...

    Gain and loss scenarios bro...

    Most of you'll probably disagree with me, but I'd love to see entirely new ip's from all of Sony's developers next gen.

    I still love series like Uncharted, Killzone, LBP etc. But allowing the developers to at least make two different game series would make things far more exciting.

    The guns in Killzone are the most satisfying in any FPS i've ever played. Especially the original. They look and sound awesome.
  • Boomalla #24 6 months ago

    I enjoyed playing both killzone 2 & 3. i'd really like to see killzone 4 on ps4 rather than ps3
  • king26 #25 6 months ago

    For me Killzone 2 was the best 2009 shooter and now KZ3 has done the same in 2011. I love the feel of the weapons and movement, the artistry, the whole sci-fi war and the way they absolutely hooked me into their multiplayer. Though I do really really hate the ISA protagonists, it would be nice to have other nationalities (eastern Europeans?) to make them more bearable. Cheesy use of American space soldiers aside, Killzone this generation has been awesome!
  • FogHeart #26 6 months ago

    They can distinguish themselves next time around by making a military shooter (well the Killzone series is, kinda) where you don't despise the characters or the story.
  • mrblonde #27 6 months ago

    Lets hope SONY don't ruin the playstation brand name anymore than it did with the ps3 what with its arrogant, oddball architecture design. The poor sales and being in the red should have given their R + D dept a kick up the backside.

    Microsoft on tthe other hand produced one of the best consoles in history with the xbox360, karma should have placed it above the WII this gen, ace games and online since 2005 and the once mighty SONY still playing catch up after 6 years !!!!!
  • wizlon #28 6 months ago

    @MattEdWithCheese I agree, Guerrilla should have had actual footage that year and not had to lie to us. At least it worked out in the end.
  • Lunastra78 #29 6 months ago

    @mrblonde This isn't about this console or that. Your posting history clearly suggests that you are expressing some built-up anger that you're trying to vent behind the anonymity of the internet.

    I guess all we can do is hope you get the professional help you need, and that things will work out for you eventually.
  • wizlon #30 6 months ago

    @gotyourmoney That's a bit unfair, Killzone 3 was quite a colourful game between the snow levels, shiny tech offices and Hellghast jungles. (Wow, I sound a bit like a Killzone fanboy in this thread don't I?)

    I loved KZ2 & KZ1 but to a lesser extent, but KZ3 not so much. Like i said in the past I still refuse to support devs who sell out their loyal true fans (im A KZ2 vet, member of the KZ forums too), and throw them under the bus. KZ3 had so much potential to be great.. to be awesome, but what we got was a COD clone or (maybe not excactly a COD clone. But KZ3 definately took one giant leap in the direction of COD).
    Still KZ3 was a dumbed down shooter to appeal to the casuals/COD players who couldn't handle KZ2's realism/more realistic aspects & didn't like the fact that you needed actual skill to get kills. Not mention the fact that KZ2 didn't have the instant gratification like in COD, which upset the casuals/COD fans even more.

    So GG decided to make KZ3 "more accessible" and wanted to appeal to a "wider audience" (like many devs/publishers these days). And KZ3 turn't out to be a pile of shit, a huge dissapointment, which I still feel was/is only Killzone in name (like many once fans do aswell). And As the famous saying goes, "Trying to please everybody only leads to failure". Which in KZ3's case is absolutely still true.

    So Guerilla Games are unfortunately dead to me, i, like many still feel that their all sell outs of the highest order. And I've at this moment still haven't even now forgiven them for what they've done too this once promising, great series.

    Although having said all that i will admit KZ3 isn't a completely crap game, technically its brilliant. And it does have a few redeeming qualitys (although not enough to save it). Its just too me (and i'm a huge fan of the KZ series), to me (and many others) on the whole it doesn't compare to the first two games (esp 2), it feels like its lost everything that made Killzone, well Killzone. And thats what saddens and angers me most about KZ3. It could've and should've of been so much more... so much better than what it was, Its IMO such a shame. :'(

    I hope that if there is a Killzone 4, i hope it goes back to what made the Killzone series great in the first place. As a fan I continue to hope and dream that KZ4 does that. Because if GG do KZ4 and bring the series back to what made it brilliant then i'll glady be (and many former fans too) will be back on board.

    @Lunastra78

    Nothing controversial in what i posted. The ps3 has been a disaster for Sony due to its poor design and lackluster exclusives in its first few years.

    GG are not a paticulary talented studio IMO, K2 cost 70 mil to make and failed commercially, it looked great but nothing the 360 couldnt of handled at half the cost and in a quarter of the time.

    iF SONY FLOP WITH THE PS4 , I THINK MICROSOFT WILL DOMINATE THE LIVING ROOM AND SONY WILL QUIT THE HARDWARE MARKET

    @Widge THANKS FOR THAT WIT, YOU IMBECILE, EVERYONE who points OUT SONYS ball droppimg this gen , gets negged and called a fanboy.
    Poor online, terrible trophy system, few popular or indeeddecent exclusives ,poor 3 rd party game performance for many years. Only the uncharted series (+ maybe infamous 2) makes me glad i bought a ps3 ,ayear after my 360.
  • Triggerhappytel #38 6 months ago

    I really agree with Cobalt Jackal; I too am/was a pretty big fan of the KZ series, but KZ3 was a massive let-down for me. The level design was middling at best, the AI was a step back and the on-rails sections were incredibly dumb. The plot wasn't bad but the storytelling and constant cutscenes were awful, and generally it felt like they'd dumbed down what had been a pretty smart and challenging shooter to appeal to the COD fanbase. I understand their reasons for this, but it didn't get them any new fans and ended up pissing off a lot of existing KZ2 fans.

    I think they should be allowed to make a new game before another Killzone. Besides, one of their studio heads said some time back that they had a new IP in development. Whatever this is, I hope it gets released as it feels like high they and their audience need a break from the KZ franchise.
  • Triggerhappytel #39 6 months ago

    Also, @ Mrblonde: while even ardent Sony fanboys would concede most of your points, suggesting that the PS3 has few decent exclusives is fucking laughable.
  • king26 #40 6 months ago

    No console this gen can compete with the PS3s quantity of quality exclusives this gen you sad little person. Xbox is ligyt years behind on that front, I find the online excellent (not to mention free). The last 3rd party game I had issues with on PS3 was Fallout 3 back in 2008. It's an issue that's almost non existant any more. And didn't Skyrim and Battlefield 3 have 360 problems?
    Back on topic, I just hope for a new lead character, I think some of you are being a bit harsh on KZ3.

    Disappointing if true. I would love to see this developer take its impressive tech and use it on a less generic, more ambitious and original game.
  • cloudskipa #47 6 months ago

    LOL Killzone...
  • MattEdWithCheese #48 6 months ago

    @Snake_2011 A mad hatter perhaps?

    Game Developers can only do a finite job within the constraints of any given piece of hardware, target renders breed unrealistic expectations, which causes disappointment, if you're a fan of disappointment then fine, don't assume I'm "Hating" your precious game because of an opinion I expressed about the industry as a whole, for example the E3 trailer for Halo 3
