BioWare may tweak the Mass Effect 3 story based on feedback to leaked script

"If leak gets more people interested in ME3, it'll be a positive."

BioWare may change the Mass Effect 3 story based on feedback to the game's leaked script, the developer has told Eurogamer.

Speaking in a Eurogamer interview ahead of their lecture at BAFTA in London this evening, BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk said if the high-profile leak of the game generates extra interest in Mass Effect 3, then the episode will have been a positive one.

"In the big picture, some more stories are generated around it and more interest in the game," Muzyka said. "We're really proud with how it's shaping up. It's going to be the best Mass Effect yet.

"It's hard to say something like that having a positive benefit, but if it gets more people to check out Mass Effect 3 that would be a positive benefit, and I think they should, because I think it's a great game."

A demo version of Mass Effect 3 leaked online after Microsoft published it to gamers previewing the Xbox Live autumn dashboard update.

The game's script was then leaked online after a Russian website mined the build. It wasn't long before fans began discussing the story online, and spoilers, including detail of the ending, appeared.

The leaked script generated much debate among fans, and it is this feedback that BioWare may use to tweak the story ahead of the game's 2012 launch.

"We listen to our fans all of the time," Muzyka continued. "We listen to them on the forums, their feedback from stories. We're reading it all. If we can get ideas out of it that will make the game better, sure. We're not adverse to taking feedback. That's part of our core values, is humility. Any time we get a good idea from fans... they're our audience. They keep us in business."

Muzyka reiterated the statement BioWare released when the leak occurred, and insisted Mass Effect 3's story was still in flux - but noted the impact on the development team.

"It was disappointing for them, yeah. They're moving on. They're making a great game. The script, frankly, has changed a little bit from what was released, too. It's been edited. They're always tuning it. They're always making it better. But yeah, it's tough when you see your work displayed. You realise only a small number of people are probably going to look at those spoilers in advance.

"It is hard on a team when they see their work revealed in an early form like that. It was a pre-release demo. The script was certainly not intended to be released in that form and that early. Here it is! It's not even out yet, but you can read through it. It's a summary.

"But they're going to get through it because they're a strong group. They really care about delivering a great game to the fans. They're committed to making this the best Mass Effect."

Muzyka urged the fans to stay clear of story spoilers because they script is out of context.

"You edit it continually. It's a living process to build a game and it's also a living experience to play through it. You're seeing the graphics, you're seeing the choices, you're seeing the characters. Words alone on a page, they're not delivered in voice over, they're not delivered in the interface, they're not delivered as your character, with your choices up to that point imbuing them with meaning and purpose and identity, the emotion part of it.

"A lot of the art now in video games is developed in an interesting way where subtle expressions and facial animation, a tilt of the head, the way the camera is positioned, the lighting in a room, they can set the tone and the mood, the sound effects, the layer of audio that's put over the top of a scene, that stuff is really important.

"What I would suggest to the fans is, we're going to make sure we deliver an awesome experience as we have in prior Mass Effect games. Don't spoil the story. The fun of the story is uncovering things and exploring and finding new points to adventure in. I hope they don't lose that joy of discovery."

(please keep the comments spoilerfree guys)

I'm not exactly sure the kind of people that pirate this stuff are experts when it comes to storytelling, or even indicative of the greater gamer public. I reckon Bioware should just stick to its own vision.

Unless I don't agree with their vision of course, in which case they should totally change it to my liking.

It'll take more than "changing a little bit" to fix this mess. The way video games are made, and the massive amounts of spoilers that made it out the gate, mean that what we saw is substantially what we're going to get. The dialogue might change but the broad strokes will essentially remain the same. It's just as well they're focusing on making the best of it.

I am already not reading/watching any preview/news about ME3 just to be sure my experience will be spoiler free.
Sadly even a partial leak of the uncompleted script has the potential to ruin part of the game for those that are not so cautious: I really don't see anything good about leaks since you can't truly predict how they will be used!

Don't listen to them Bioware! Just carry on writing great stories.

If you believe the anti-Bioware camp (you know who you are, scumbags!), then everything they've done since Baldurs Gate is dumbed down shit.

    It isn't.

Shep was a ghost all along / Saren and Shep were the same person / Shep was Keyser Soze / The Citadel was Earth all along / Captain Anderson was Shep's father

Just thought I'd get all those out of the way.

If you treat it as art, as your baby, as something complicit in love; instead we have a product melted down by fanboys who don't give a fuck anyways

My problem with the leak wasn't the dialogue, tone or delivery - it was the core content. The basic pattern from all the plot events.

Bioware, when you guys are good, you're good. But this...it was laughable. As in, I actually laughed. There isn't a context sensical enough to justify plot devices purely for conflict and padding like those were. Try not to take this as internet cynicism; as a fan, I was rather sad about it. :(

Man, Mass Effect 1. That was an amazing game. I finished it at least seven times and it's definitely in MY top 5 favorite games (despite some minor flaws). Spent over 150 hours with it. But this... I just fear the worst... I really do.

i hope bioware won't listen to them and doesn't change anything .

@redbarony Mass effect I always liked (though its the ONLY one post BG trilogy). The studios good, just wish theyd get their act together and work out wtf they are making rather than trying to appeal to RPGers all the time.

Dragon Age 1&2 for me were total disasters, 1 was boring and 2 was a dumb beyond words hack and slash AND boring. Clearly talent resides in the studio, but its not showing in that franchise.

@nimzy They won't change anything. All the dialogue was recorded quite some time ago, the game is well into beta and content complete. Changing anything would mean a delay of a year or so. And that is not gonna happen.

But I agree, the parts I read were ridiculous and an enormous disappointment. I think the main quest of Mass Effect is probably the best storytelling ever in a game. It's got ups and downs, it's a rollercoaster ride, there is drama, surprises. It's great. I expected more of the same from ME 2 but that turned out to be a collection of character short stories (characters that don't even have a role in ME 3, cause every single one of them could've died in ME 2) and just when you had your crew and thought the game would start you fly to the Reaper construction yard and the game is over. If ME was a great movie, ME 2 is nothing but a soap. From what I can tell ME 3 will be scripted reality. And not the good one.

Somewhat impressed and surprised that Bioware have turned out to be one of the developers that 'gets' it and instead of using it as an excuse for yet another diatribe against piracy is able to adapt and take advantage of the opportunity it presents them.

So its confirmed that they intentionally leaked the script to stir up shit around their sad mainstream push a button awsomeness and it backfired on them.
Not a big surprise, anyone who read the plot so far sad its a rather sad piece of garbage.
I expect from what I saw from the leaked videos something along the lines of ME2. Recruit races to fight for earth because everyone is unwilling to fight for some reason, and then go and destroy the reapers in a final boss fight same as ME2. Before you even start it ends.
Tack on some overacted childish attempt at gay/lesbo/alien sex to mask their incompetence like in DA2 and you'r ready to go.

Being EA's bitches didn't do any good to them.

Oh and this sound more like heavy damage controll.
Bioware always do with their releases when shit hits the fan they sure as hell won't/can't rewrite an almsot finished game.
This at best amounts to more lies the usual suckering of fanboys.

What Mass Effect 3 needs is an evil dog.

    You'll know it's evil because there'll be a close up and its eyes will be all like (. )(. ) ( .) ( .)

So we'll see canon lesbian sex, more explosions and the Normandy transforming into a giant robot then.
