MechWarrior reboot still alive

Piranha Games spits out new image.

MechWarrior developer Piranha Games has released a new screenshot for its long-awaited MechWarrior reboot.

Fragments of the image are being revealed day by day on the game's Twitter feed. The latest, mostly-complete version lies below. It appears to show the lower half of a beefy-looking bipedal mech.

Piranha first announced it was working on a new MechWarrior game back in 2009, with plans to release it on PC and Xbox 360.

Piranha Games has since remained silent on the title's progress.

The MechWarrior reboot will be a fresh start for the dormant series, and is set in the year 3015 - before all previous titles.

  • IronGiant #2 7 months ago

Hmmmm.. Wish someone would do a new Mechassault or Crimson Skies instead! Loved those games on the old Xbox.

Ah-ha! I can tell it's a next-gen Mechwarrior game due to the large amounts of BROWN! Also, this picture has more pixellation blur than a Japanese gangbang video.
  • bobfish09 #4 7 months ago

    That looks hand-drawn.
  • Orihalcon19 #5 7 months ago

Awesome. Glad that the game is still alive post all the legal hassles with mech patents etc etc et al. Always been a mech fan - any type game no matter how rubbish really haha - so really hoping this get's pushed through to be a quality game.

Will be getting it regardless :D

Mechwarrior is the game that got me back into gaming when I lapsed after the Mega Drive. Well, that and Quake.

Is this going to be on PC? The article is tagged 360/PS3, but the text of the story suggests it might be 360/PC.

Article is correct, it was announced 360/PC.

Remember trying to play one of the early ones on my windows 95 pc when I was about thirteen.
It crashed it like nobody's business.
  • Davemanz #9 7 months ago

As long as they keep the slow, deliberate pace and simulation feel of the series (as opposed to the more arcadey mechassault games) it's an automatic purchase. My joystick and throttle have been itching for a MW game to really get into on the PC for years.
  • Bucser #10 7 months ago

Actually the first mechwarrior was and rpg/adventure like game not a sim:) (because of limitations on system resources)
  • rottingyoda #11 7 months ago

Started playing mercenaries again last week. One of my all time favs. Nothing more satisfying then taking something like a daishi down with a couger or shadow cat. As mentioned above, as long as the game is slow and deliberate and more of a sim then the mechassault games its an insta-buy for me

its got fists and not in a atlas kind of way
  • RexRunti #13 7 months ago

    @arcam PC and 360.

I think Microsoft published the last one so it might never appear on the PS3. That said the franchise has jumped between Activision, Microprose and Microsoft over the years so who knows who will actually publish it.
  • sonicyoda #14 7 months ago

Blimey, not much of a screenshot! Must've been taken using an On Live direct feed.

@Bucsar Mechwarrior was originally a pen and paper RPG game, Battletech was the board game based on mech combat set in the same universe. There was some combat in Mechwarrior but the games really should be called Battletech because you don't get out of you mech. Never knew why they used Mechwarrior for the game titles, I always assumed it was legal wranglings or just a marketing spin.
  • kangarootoo #16 7 months ago

There was indeed legal wranglings over the name. I think at one point FASA were involved, and another company, and when the RPG property changed hands (I don't know which way round the companies switched ownership) that introduced some complications, somewhere back in the early 90s I think.

Incidentally, wasn't there an RPG update called Mechwarrior 2, which meant when Mechwarrior 2 the VG came out, they had to license that specific title (rather than just add a 2 because it was a sequel). Can't remember the details, and can't be arsed to google it :)
  • GamesConnoisseur #17 7 months ago

Acti owned MechWarrior 2 I think and cannot publishes sequels and so the further games all retained same MW2 but with different subtitles to make distinctions between each one or something like that.

I also ought to be negged for not researching or linking articles, but anything to get us back in love and playing with MechWarriors would be heaven. I first played the series on PC and then Xbox, loved them all but PC versions still stood out.
  • kangarootoo #18 7 months ago

I used to play MW2 on my Mac (Performa 5300) against a friend on his PC, over a modem. This was before mobile phones, so if something cocked up you would have to phone up, make plans, hang up and dial out again. No voice chat for us :)

Bits and pieces of a mech? Could this be a redesigned concept art for that mech they got sued forafter copying the design from some japanese mecha series?
  • Carlit088 #20 7 months ago

Glad this is still on track, used to play NetNech over Kali in '96.
    Enhanced imaging... er... wireframe ftw!

Oh yeah, this really made my week! Found out about the twitter feed a few days agoand it made me jump up and down of joy! (so to speak.. :p)

Anyway, according to the dates given in the feed, we won't be fighting in 3015 anymore but in the 3045-3050 era...thats just before the clans invaded the inner sphere and about the time of MW2: Mercenaries (which is, in my most humble of opinions, the best mechwarrior game to date!) Hell, even if it turns out to be a remake of MW2:Mercs, i'll preorder this the moment it's available!

"So how does it feel being strapped to a walking nuke reactor at 6am?" :)
  • Zaiz #22 7 months ago

I loved these games as a kid
  • Rusty_M #23 7 months ago

Those looking to whet their appetite for this could do worse than checking out Mech Warrior Living Legends. It's a mod for Crysis Wars. I always wanted MW2 Mercenaries, but didn't have the PC to run it at the time. I couldn't even afford the 50MB hard drive space.

Anyway. A link to that mod is here:

    A Mechcommander-lite for XBLA/PSN would be sweet.

A decent MW game could be great fun, especially online/clans/persistent wars etc.

mech2 mercs and mech 4 are some of best games ever made, i have been watching this game from the word go i tought it was dead!
  • varkdm #26 7 months ago

I thought mechwarrior 3 was the best of the franchise - had the best controls and the most intense storyline. Mechwarrior 2 was an awesome game, i can remember the intro being pure awesome for that day and age. The music was great as well, still have it riped from the original disc to use as backing for other games.

Mech 4 was good, but i found the control change tarnished it a little, mech 4 mercenaries was also a great game. Never played the first one or mechwarrior 2 mercs. I loved mech commander 2 as well :)

Its not Cell Shaded it's Concept Art.

    Check out the developers Twitter.
  • ghiest #29 7 months ago

Guys, it's not a screenshot. It's a piece of concept art, there is also a shot of all the mech concept art hanging on the wall of their office. I think they are mostly done buy a guy call flyingdebris (look up his stuff on deviantart) who's also done allot for the hard copy TRO's for the Battletech/Mechwarrior board game.
