Final Fantasy Tactics iPhone is £11

Remake out in UK tomorrow.

The iPhone port of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions costs £10.99 in the UK, Square Enix has confirmed.

The superb strategy RPG, which launches on the UK App store tomorrow, is available to buy from PlayStation Network for £7.99.

War of the Lions is a remake of the classic PSone game Final Fantasy Tactics, which was never released in Europe.

It features better graphics, an improved script translation and animated cutscenes.

The iPhone and iPod Touch version features a touch interface and further technical and graphical improvements.

As revealed earlier this week, in Japan the game costs 1800 yen, in the US $15.99 and in the eurozone 12.99 Euro.

The iPad version launches later in the month.

And so the inevitable trend in ever increasing smartphone game costs begins in earnest.
  • StolenGlory #2 10 months ago

    £11 eh?

    Yeah... here we go.
  • Velios #3 10 months ago

It's well worth £11 of anyone's money. I've got a horrible flight to Australia coming up later in the month and this game will help me get through it no doubt... That's worth £11 to me alone.

It's not unexpected given the amount of content on offer. I expect further ports of "proper" games to follow a similar pricing strategy.

I remember spending at least 80 hours playing the GBA version, so not a bad price at all considering the length of the game

I'm sold. Quality game that i can play on the go. And i spend a lot of time on the go! :)

It'll be funny when smartphone games cost as much as 3ds games. I love the fact that I chose a regular mobile phone over a smart phone recently because it's saving me much cash I can spend on real games.

    @bemaniac

This is a real game. I'm kind of tempted to get it.

Its true that the original FFT was not released in Europe the remake was released for the PSP (and it was just as good as the original)
This is probably the same game as the PSP remake so the price does not seem all that steep if you ask me.

it bugs me that its only released for Apple devices, but then i already own the American origianl for PSOne and the remake for PSP, so no loss for me.

I'm really exicted for the iPad version. Tad expensive though.

I'll be holding fire for the iPad version. Loved this game on the PS1 back in the day
  • Murbal #12 10 months ago

Or £7.99 from PSN. I know which version I'm going back to. May lead to a drop in the other Square appstore games though 'in celebration of the release'. Half price FF3 perhaps?
  • Murbal #13 10 months ago

I'm sold. Quality game that i can play on the go. And i spend a lot of time on the go! :-)

    Replace 'go' with 'toilet'? :D

Wellll, this should test the metal of 'gamers' who own expensive personal organisers! Let's see if they are willing to spend £11 and even longer on the bog.
  • GamesConnoisseur #15 10 months ago

Square Enix know it's ll sell, so they can price it how they want. Would be interesting to see how will it will do and adds how many more to the overall total sold for the franchise. On top of PS1 and PSN.

I ll hold for both iPad version and the inevitable discount at some point in future.

    @Murbal

Well precisely! I was a bit worried when the 10 hour achievement popped up for Angry Birds, considering I only play Angry Birds on the "go".

    That's a lot of "go" time... ;)
  • Mr_Brown #17 10 months ago

Well considering I've played this on the PSP, DS and GBA I'm not sure why I would buy this again. It's a good game, but I thought they should at least charge half that price for it considering how many people already have this.

Though it's pretty obvious they trying to set a trend to increase game prices on the app store.
  • eviroboy #18 10 months ago

Regardless of whether or not the game is worth the price, it surely is, but is it suited to a relatively tiny screened smartphone? No. iPad, maybe, but come on £11 for a phone game? For years the App store has been bigging up cheap gaming experiences and every now and again they chuck in a 'classic' at a stupid price, especially for the market they're aimed at, casual gaming.

Ditched my iPhone a while ago. Unless they make a 14" version, to mimic the TV's of old, I'm just not interested. But therein lies the problem, if they did that, I'd rather play it on an actual games console.
  • Whitster #19 10 months ago

I'd quite happily drop £11 on this, IF it was dual binary and had cloud saving like Aralon. Other developers are doing it so why aren't you Square?

More expensive app purchases will make people think twice about switching to another OS and losing their investment.

    Just a thought.
  • xandoodle #21 10 months ago

Releasing separate versions on the iPad and iPhone is a joke.

THE SAME DAMN GAME. Make it universal ffs...
  • lucky_jim #22 10 months ago

Square's games have always been among the most expensive on the App Store, so this is no surprise.

I think this is pretty reasonable. This would have been a £30 handheld release on physical media, it's hardly Angry Birds is it? Take away distribution and media costs and from that £30 and £11 isn't so unreasonable. If it's really too much for you, just wait for the inevitable sale: much as you would have done if you balked at the £30 cost on physical media.
  • NuclearWinter #23 10 months ago

Final Fantasy III was also released at 10.99 on iOS (and still is). So this is not anything surprising, it's the price that was expected.

For 11 quid I'd expect a universal app, frankly. It shows a lack of understanding of the market these days.
